Next year's scholarship situation

20 lbs of muscle in one offseason does sound crazy, but if a guy like Homer Bailey in a non-contact sport can add 10 lbs of muscle then I guess it's not out of the question.

Jay Bruce added 25 pounds of muscle before last season. So yes, it can be done. To Waite's point, the term "muscle" is being used lightly.

These guys are adding weight by working out and building up mass. Saying someone added 20 pounds of muscle is saying they added 20 pounds but in a good way.

Guys I'm not saying you can't put on 20lbs. I'm saying your not putting on 20lbs of lean muscle mass. It is not possible in that amount of time.. Go visit any certified trainer at your health club. He'll tell you the same thing. It is not possible. You no how much time in exercise and eating it takes to put on a pound of lean mass. I've been lifting weights for 40 years. Not saying I know it all but I can tell you your not putting on 20lbsof lean muscle mass in a off season. You can lean out and you can gain weight but your not adding 20lbs pounds of muscle.

I knew girls my freshman year in college that put on 20 lbs. Of course they weren't working out all day and didn't start with a pencil thin frame...

Regardless, even if he can, he still wouldn't be an ideal player to man the 5 spot which is why UC would be better off if big Dave sticks around. Of course that's assuming they don't bring in some stud center out of nowhere.

What does this have to do with the scholarship situation? Please stay on topic.

It should be pretty easy to figure out how JJ not being able to gain the necessary weight/strength (assuming that is what is required) to play the center position affects the the scholarship situation.

Those girls you knew your freshman year are going out for the basketball team? Sweet.

Yea I know some of those girls too and they never shed the weight either lol

JJ could add 15 this offseason. As long as he eats right it will go to the right places.

No doubt. Our program was defined by toughness and muscle. It was a topic of discussion on almost every nationally televised game as they would talk about Curtis Bostic, or Brannen, or Fletcher's bodies. Anyway, this is a stupid argument. The point is, JJ could put on the muscle if he wanted to. He showed zero improvement from last year to this year, so if Mick said he is not a hard worker, then that explains it. I thought he would be a beast this year and I was very disappointed by the way he played this whole season.

no doubt but now were defined by athleticism length and speed. that was a different philosophy as much as some dont want to realize that

cronin has talked about this very subject many many times now were defined by athleticism length and speed. that was a different philosophy as much as some dont want to realize that. he prefers fast long players over big balky types. ya there are the james whites and even yancy but for most part it is what it is. but what does this have to do with scholarships?

Ok so on another thread someone wrote SK was staying for his senior year:

Which means A one of the recruits will be asked to go prep for a year

Or B somebody is Transferring

Yep, that's exactly what I think of when I think about this year's team....athleticism, length, and speed.

Went to the year end banquet tonight at Montgomery Inn, was very good. Cronin talked about every player on the team and took shots at many of them, including saying JDIII's hair looked like his daughter's bike helmet, and that Cheikh was always in foul trouble b/c players blew by JJ and SK.

Said SK is staying, that SK values a college degree, loves Cincy and wants to be a role model for his daughter. SK will be captain next year

Said JJ is on the Eric Hicks plan. He wants to get him to 230, he is currently at 215, up 8 lb's from season's end. He also wants a bball transformation like Kenyon had from his Jr. to Sr. year. No social life for JJ. All work this offseason.

Sanders was runner up for most improved player, SK won

Big Dave going to contribute next year. Didn't have any coaching at Mtn. State at all, making strides on court and weight room

Titus told MC today that he wants to have a big Sr. year. Motivated to work hard

Gaines has graduated in 3 yrs and having surgery on his shoulder Friday. Mick mentioned how every player would help us next year except for Gaines. That coupled with the above mentioned make me think he may not be back.

JJ can add 20lbs of body weight but he ain't putting on 20lbs of muscle. Two different concepts.he may even reshape his body but he isn't putting on 20lbs of muscle mass.

You don't need to convince me. Talk to Mick. His exact quote about Cash...."He's 20 pounds of muscle stronger than he was a year ago". My feeling is...if Cash can do it, then JJ can do it.

No, but he can add 10-12 and put in the time learning how to use his quickness and athleticism to his advantage on the block, while working on finishing under contact and free throws. JJ has some very nice natural gifts. You see it once in a great while when he does a spin move around a defender on the block. Not many bigs would be able to keep up with him so if he became merely average it'd be huge for the team. It would also help him not get dinged up so much.

Jeff, while I like JJ's energy I really hope he is not a key component for the team next year. Really don't see where his game is going to take a big step this off season when it hasn't in 3 years previously. His ball skills need alot of work. He does give you a flash now and then but his inconsistencies and turnovers drive me crazy. He is also foul prone. Hope he is subbing and adding depth but not gettting major minutes. If he is being counted on for anything more than that we are in trouble.

Mick is confusing bodyweight with lean mucsle mass. Many people do that. JJ can add 20lbs get stronger and look terrific but he isn't adding 20 lbs of muscle mass. The additional weight should help him for no other reason that it makes him more difficult to move in the paint. rest assured all 20 lbs won't be muscle. Consider this as well. With all the running these guys to to stay in shape and develope their game adding weight and keeping it on is not a easy task.
