Next years team

Now back on topic. Next years team will be a work in progress. Lots of pieces return but it will have to be molded into a cohesive unit.

1. I think JL will take a huge step forward. His size and ball skills will be utilized much more playing the 4 instead of the 5. He will also benefit from a full year in the weight room and another year removed from the wrist-injury he sustained in high school costing him almost all his senior year.

2. KJ has demonstrated that the game is certainly not to big for him. He may be a Better athlete then SK. With more PT he could be a star. Sky is the limit.

3. TC will be a much improved floor general. He'll benefit from not having the pressure of deferring to SK. His game will be more instinctive. He also has the benefit of having played major minutes this year. He now knows what to expect.

4. Not sure what Morman will bring His rep out of HS was very physical. A slasher and very good defender.

5. DeBerry has two years of JUCO experience. Not many move to D-1 and have big time success.

6. Strickland is a complete unknown. Really need him and DeBerry to provide some points and defensive presence.

Note: last three players have no D-1 experience.

7. If Shaq don't get more physical and step his defense up I see him having the same type of year he had last year. Inconsistent production. Mick will not tolerate people who don't guard or rebound.

8. Guyn and Sanders will provide depth off the bench.

9. Clarke, Moore and new recruits or transfers could impact rotation but as of right now are complete unknowns. They will need to guard and earn there time.

Thanks Jeff. Really have a issue with attaching labels to people. Especially race or religious ones. Fact is we are all Americans and should be viewed as such. As Long as we allow people to see us as groups it will always work to fracture us as a nation. Our own politicians have been fostering this thinking and taking advantage of this for years.
No one should care about the color of the player under the jersey, and no one on this board does, save one. This individual has repeated brought color into the equation, and does so at every opportunity that presents itself. Every time that race is brought into a thread, that post should be deleted. But that has not been the case here, and the one poster that has consistently accused the University of institutional racism has been allowed to do so without condemnation. It is shameful, and has everything to do what is just and right. What's sad is that there are few on here that are really offended by this individual's accusations.

Bulldog didn't mean anything by the white boy sniper comment. I think most of us know that. Amberley is LT light and like LT causes problems on every board he's on. Trust me his "Mick dont recruit white boys" had far more venom in it than Bulldogs comment.

People need to stop being hypersensitive to everyone that disagrees with them. Honestly it's like policing high school girls sometimes.

Jason im tied up today please feel free to ban who you feel needs it to bring sanity.

I just logged on but this thread is out of hand. Bans have been handed out. Keep this board civil please. Disagreements are fine but disrespect is not. Period.

as a 20 year military veteran I find it very offensive. We are all Americans regardless of race, color or creed. I will not except nothing less. I didn't do 20 years for any one group. I served all Americans.

I agree with most of this. Shaq is the key to this team next year IMO. We need him to get stronger and be more consistent. I think Lawrence could be the best player on this team with a good offseason. He just has to stop fouling.

fouling is a disease most freshman are inflicted with. Your point is well taken. He needs to be able to guard without fouling. Shaq really needs to seek contact and not try to avoid it. Nothing wrong with shooting FT's. Been here 3 years in my mind he should be further along. Hope he has a big off season. Team needs him.

I just want a shooter. I don't care if it is Bigfoot-if he can shoot, I want him. If that means Torian Graham, so be it. If it means a Brad Redford type, so be it. Just want someone that can add another dimension to our offense. I actually glad that we went more towards skill than athleticism in this recruiting class, that is what winning will help you achieve. When you look at Moore, DeBerry, and Strickland's potential to score inside, it is easy to get excited. I like having some athletic freaks like JJ and Shaq, but you need a mixture of players to be successful.

Remember that part of being a good shooter is getting open looks. If UC has a consistent scoring option in the post, it will open up the outside shot and percentages will go up. I don't think we have a pure shooter on this roster right now, and that is needed, but until you can make the defense respect an inside threat, a pure shooter won't help much.

I am looking forward to next season. It has been a long time since we have had big men coming in that are being labelled as scorers and not athletes. My husband has been high on Strickland and thinks our fortunes would have been better had he been available. SK will be impossible to replace, but here are my picks.
Caupain
Lawrence
Thomas
Strickland
Johnson

Truthfully Guyn shouldn't see the floor for this team. He will because of age....but he doesn't bring enough consistently to be more than an 8-10 minute player at best even with his experience.

i think there is a chance he sees a bit more action then that. He is a good on the ball defender and can make the three. Wouldn't surprise me to see him run a little wing.

Hate to agree with you but its true. Is a limited role player at best at this level. This cant be your starting point guard if you want your team to run efficiently on offense. Great defensive replacement but Troy, Kevin, and Deshaun need to all take some of his minutes next year unless there is a drastic improvement in his game. That 2012 class has just been a swing and a miss thus far for Mick.

Jack if we don't bring in another PG he will get some minutes there. I do agree TC will see the majority of the minutes.

No doubt he will see minutes there I just dont think that he should. I think he might see some time at the two and you'll see him and Troy on the floor together next season. I just watch him and wonder what he consistently contributes to make him worthy of major minutes on a high major team.

For comparison, Larry Davis went from playing 21.6 minutes as a junior to 11.5 as a senior. It depends on the player, if Mick can get him to buy into playing less minutes without losing his confidence it can/will happen.

I really think he was miscast out of need last year. With only a incoming freshmen to run point, options were limited. He shot the ball well at times but his drive dish game is not there. Good defender but I really think TC takes the big step over the summer that puts distance between himself and Guyn. He'll still get run but it won't be the same minutes he got last year

Next years team will really be a challenge for Mick. A good comparison would
be this years WV team. One of Micks mentors Huggins had a team that would excite you at times offensively but couldn't Guard. Replacing JJ and Rubles defensively Will be very tough. There contributions defensively was off the charts. They guarded multiple positions and basically did it with out much help from the bench. If we only score as much as we did last year it will be a long year. No way do we guard as well as last year.

I think rubles won't be as difficult to replace only because while another player may not lock down defensively as well they will contribute massive amounts more offensively, so it will prob be a wash.

I havent really thought about it until now, because it doesn't do much good, but if Strickland, Davis and Mormon were all able to contribute this year, who knows how the season could have been different?

Lawrence at the 4, less guyn maybe? Offensive spark off the bench in davis. Someone to throw the ball to in the post a few times a game.
