Next years team

I'm sure this is based on his high recruiting ranking. His highlight videos make you wonder what the next few years could bring. Looks special but I guess you never know if it will translate to the college level.

I'm with you there. I watched a lot of his videos last year and you couldn't help but be excited. What stood out to me was his ball skills for a big man. Saw him out on the break with the ball many times, changing hands, spin moves, etc. Thought he would be a stud. But this year, I didn't see those same ball skills. When he tried to put the ball on the floor, he often turned it over. Not sure what to believe now.

Props to Lunardi for pimping ESPN for every dollar he's gotten. Considering how terrible he is at predicting the field, it is simply amazing what he's done...

Especially since his predictions now are not based on a resume, which is his specialty, they are based on his predictions of how good the teams will be.

Yup. I'm sure he's been top dog on every team he's played on so the optimist in me wants to chalk it up to being the freshman on a senior led team. Maybe a little timid? Either way I'm holding out hope.

I didnt even know they did this. Season ended 2 days ago.

But gotta love Cincinnati starting as the under under dogs already.

Now we have the entire offseason to be really hungry

I think 3 teams in the tournament is a worst-case scenario for the AAC. I believe we will land 6 teams in the NCAA tournament and the NIT -- just a matter of the proportion.

As for Cincinnati being the first out, I have no problem with that. We are losing our top 2 scorers from a team that struggled to score and our recruiting class, while solid, is unheralded. If anything, I take it as respect for the job Mick Cronin has been doing getting us into the tournament consistently since, on paper, an outsider would look at next year's team as the most questionable Cincinnati squad since at least the Lance Stephenson season.

I know Danny Manning is gone, but they return most of their core players if I recall. Unless something has changed recently, anyway. I think Tulsa will be pretty good.

Tulsa would probably win C-USA next year, I think they'll be decent but it is an upgrade in competition playing Cincinnati and UConn. I see them as an NIT level team with 18-20 wins.

This is kind of random but, I've always wondered how walk ons manage to get on the team. Does anybody know?

I would say it's different for different teams. For UC from what I've heard Mick usually seeks out a local player to come in and be a walk-on. I would imagine this would be the case for most major programs. I know Eppensteiner came in this way and the freshman this year. I talked to Eppensteiner's dad his freshman year and he said he had a scholarship to play D3 but Mick approached him to go to UC and pay his own way and be a walk-on. The chance to stay home and be a part of the Bearcats was enough for him to do that. I also know in past years Huggins and Cronin put out a search for guys to help out when rosters get depleted or they need help in practice, etc. Derek Cox did that last year and they had at least one more that helped out in practice I believe. Connor Barwin joined that way as did Jackson and Petrus (I hope my memory serves me correctly on those names) for Huggins back in the late 90's. I don't think it's typical that players to just show up for an open practice every year at least at major programs but I would imagine if a kid came to the coach and had the skills to merit a tryout that a coach would give him a look.

Next years team as it stands now will be a absolute war for minutes. Like most I see:
DeBerry
TC
Shaq
Lawrence
KJ

Out of that group the one I'm most excited about is KJ. Seeing how he responded at the end of the year in big time, big game situations is very encouraging. It's rare to find young guys in reserve roles take on those kind of moments. Reading through past threads on KJ it is also encouraging to see a humble, respectful student athlete as one of our Cats. This kids character will drive him to reach his potential on or off the court. You just know he he will work as hard as possible.

The depth of the team is really encouraging. This group is harder to predict than last season. Everyone is either new or will be in an expanded role. I'm hoping Shaq becomes more assertive, TC grabs the starting PG spot, JL adds strength & confidence while playing a more natural position, someone takes the leadership role, and one or two of the freshman play meaningful minutes.

Player 1 Stats: 3.0 points (34% shooting), 2.1 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.6 blocks in 12.0 minutes per game.
Player 2 Stats: 2.9 points (33% shooting), 2.9 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.6 blocks in 15.0 minutes per game.

Player 1 is Deandre Daniel's in his freshman year and Player 2 is Jermaine Lawrence. Daniel's jumped to 12 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks his sophomore year. I am hoping to a see a similar jump in Lawrence's stats next year!

nice comparison and I think it is absolutely doable for JL.

Wow those freshman #s are scary similar. Great info.

i find this comparison to be more convenient than anything. DeAndre Daniels was a 3/wing coming out of high school who slid down to the stretch 4 at UConn and was a good shooter coming out of high school. His sophomore year nearly 20% of his points came from 3 pointers. I think we all know that is not Lawrence's strength or a likely outcome next year.

Lawrence is a 4 and he is not a particularly good shooter nor does he have 3 point range right now. He could make the jumps points wise, but I don't think Daniels is a good comparison in terms of the type of game/skills either player has.

On the contrary. JL had very good range in high school. When he was recruited he was reputed to have a very nice outside shot all the way out to 3 point range. The fact he was asked to do something entirely different this year could have impacted all of his game. Still believe Daniels is a very good comparison.

Lawrence can shoot the 3. Just needs more minutes and confidence so he isn't rushing his shot like he did most of last year. I think him and TC could also potentially benefit from dropping that little leg kick they do on every jumper. In my opinion that's to much motion in a shot, which results in inconsistent shooting. KJ has the most fluid jumper from the returning players on the team, I suspect he averages between 8-11 ppg next season.

KJ has a beautiful stroke. If we dont sign anyone else, he's my pick to lead the team in scoring...and I think he'll do it without having to take the most shots.
