Octavius Ellis

The legend was a founding member of this site.... So no.

Also a bad game??? Been a few. Really struggling right now

He cannot finish around the rim well and is too slow in making his moves. As I mentioned in another thread, I would like to see them use him the way Louisville used Gorgui Dieng on offense. He has a good jumper, they need to get him away from the basket some. When he posts he needs make quicker moves. I still think by the end of next season Ellis will at least get a look at the NBA level.

I think Octavius is dealing with a lack of confidence right now and I can see why. He simply turns the ball over at an alarming rate. He travels half of the time he tries to make a move. That would make me hesitant. To be a good player your skills and your actions have to get to a point where they just come to you naturally. The ability to recognize a defense and make the appropriate play. You can see him thinking when he catches the ball. Instead of making a move that is clearly there he looks to pass much too often. I think it's just reaction to him not wanting to travel and turn the ball over. Has to find a way to fix it.

It seems like I may be in the minority, but I'm not happy at all about that play by Ellis last night. I don't care how he reacted afterwards, he has now been kicked out of the game 2 times this year. I tried to defend him after the first one bc Mick continued to support him. But now that it has happened twice, how is anyone going to believe that it will never happen again? How much is too much? With the way we've disciplined Caupain Moore and Morman...is it time to sit Ellis down too to send him a message? I don't feel comfortable settling with the "Yeah yeah he just won't do it again" attitude. BC next time he might get someone seriously hurt. And I don't want a reputation for this team to be that it has cheap players. Tough and dirty are 2 completely different things.

I don't think it was dirty. Stupid yes but not dirty. You don't sit him. Jelan Reynolds has the same make up. Just have to learn to control the emotion.

I think that is a complete overreaction to a play that didn't even deserve an ejection. It wasn't smart and it wasn't good, but Ellis wasn't being malicious with it. He couldn't get up for the block and he put 2 hands in the guys chest and gave him a slight push. Slow motion always makes the contact look much more severe.

Even 10 years ago it's probably nothing more than a hard foul.

If you look at the push itself it was a light push he could have pushed him A LOT harder. He simply wasn't going to allow him to score. Knowles has to know if you are going to try to go up for a home run dunk against Cincinnati, know that it's not going to happen if Ellis is there. He shouldn't have gotten kicked out and the American conference even acknowledged that. I would think the fans would have his back...

Fair enough. Clearly my reaction to it was stronger than everyone else's, so I'll move past it and hope he learns from it.

I agree, Ellis is just immature and let's his emotions get the best of him. He certainly isn't the first and won't be the last.

That was just a dumb play last night and Knowles put some acting on top to make it look worse.

He needs to learn how to foul hard and not get tagged with a flagrant. Someone needs to show him some old Rodman/Lambier tapes.

the game was a lot different back in the Rodman/Lambier days. Those two would foul out in first half the way the games are Called now.

I'm glad he was in the post game press conference last night and got a chance to talk about the Houston game. I definitely overreacted to that whole thing at first.

I didn't get to hear the post game presser, what did he have to say Jacob?

He said it was a boneheaded play. He knew he couldn't block the shot last second and he didn't want to give the guy a free lay up. He also said since it was a skinny guy he didn't realize how hard that push was going to be. Then one of the reporters joked that it wasn't exactly Justin McBride that he pushed and they all laughed. He was saying also how he's just an intense guy all the time out there.

Ellis' importance on the court this year has propelled UC to reach the success they have had, especially recently. But, his story beyond basketball is truly remarkable. If I was him, I would have no idea which path I may have been lead down. i just became aware of this story, but here it is. Really, really rooting for him to continue to strive in his progression as a basketball player and as a person.

Just thought I'd send this post here since we had this Ellis thread already going...I'm glad he is mature enough to be open about it. Can't imagine what kind of impact something like that could have if you aren't surrounded by the right people. I hope for nothing but the best for him.

Kudos to Mick and the coaching staff for believing in this kid. It's articles like this that make me appreciate Mick Cronin and what he has done for this program and the kids he recruits even more. He truly does care. We've got a great leader of our basketball program here, folks. I wish nothing but the best for Octavius and his family in the future. Hopefully one with a Final Four appearance in it ;).
