Mick is probably reading my posts. I've been saying the same thing for years. If you want respect in the polls (benefit of the doubt) you must win big in March preferably for a few years.

Mick is a smart guy. He knows how the sport works. Just today I was listening to First Preview podcast and they were talking about early season college sleepers. One of the guys said Tulsa, who is 4th best in the American. When mentioning UC, he said "You know they're gonna be a gritty team, but you never know if they're gonna have anyone who is gonna put the ball in the basket."...This is just some guy in Vegas who talks betting. I think that sums up the National perception. He has nothing at stake when talking about UC. Only the people who really pay attention know what we do about the offseason work and uptempo approach. They won't believe until they see it, and this is the year we change the perception.

Many have claimed that our perception nationally is a lot better than how we're viewed here under Mick. It's examples like this and all these national publications that don't seem to be noticing us at all, that prove how far we have sunk. I realize I'm re-visiting an old argument here, but the good news is that I believe this is going to all change this year and into the future. I think we're going to witness a re-birth of our program starting this year. I know we've made the tournament 5 years in a row, but we've done very little in March to prove that means much. With our improved recruiting, and what appears to be a great roster this year, I hope this is the beginning of something really good, and this year represents the last time we're overlooked in the preseason publications and polls.

I had my hands in the air praising when I read that quote. Mick is finally turning a new leaf and getting it. Stop begging for national respect and go earn. That is earned in March. Good stuff.

As much as I want preseason recognition, it doesn't bother me too much that we don't have it. Preseason rankings don't matter really in any sport. College football rankings, especially now with the playoff, are only released so we have stuff to argue about and so they can market games as "battle of top 20 teams." College basketball rankings don't matter until December, and even then not too much. As long as we win, which I think we win 24-26 games, get into March and make some noise, we will start getting national attention again. Prove it on the court, not in the polls.

Rankings matter in recruiting and getting national televised games

I don't want to or intend to over-hype preseason rankings, but here's an interesting article (it's a bit dated written in 2011) that includes how preseason rankings can be an indicator of post-season success. It's part of a larger article about overachieving teams coming back down to earth during the tourney. About 7 paragraphs down is the preseason stuff.

Sure, but again that comes with sustained success. Being ranked 22 to start the season or unranked doesn't really matter.

Speaking for myself here but I am usually more inclined to watch a game with a ranked team than unranked. If they are both ranked I am even more likely to watch. Your name comes up so much more often when you are ranked in media (like espn coverage) and even if you are looking at scores online. Generally the top 25 come up and you can select "all" if you need to see more.

The exposure is night and day really. But as Cronin said you have to earn the respect by continued results to be one of the media darlings. We used to have it and we can get it back pretty quickly because of our history as a program.

Sure it does. It matters a lot. You always want to see your team ranked. Everybody makes a big deal out of making the tourney 5 straight years. All that means is you're one of the top 68. Being ranked consistently is a way bigger deal than making the NCAA 5 straight years and getting bounced in the first or second game every time. I don't care if you're ranked 25th, you're still getting a lot more exposure by being ranked.

ill be there tonight. ill be the dead looking one in section 104 after waking up sick this morning
