Pressing

We lost by 3-4 baskets. SK missed 13 shots by himself. Others on the team contributed too, but it's hard to point the finger anywhere other than SK when he shoots 14% from three and 27% overall. I don't even know why we are debating this.
I'm not debating it.

I posted on another thread that we are 8 deep averaging 17+ minutes and 9 deep averaging 13+ minutes (approx). The year before we had 6 and 7 respectively with an injured Cash. The year before that we had 6 and 6. The year before that we had 8 or 9 again and that was (I think) when we had the Goon Squad coming in. That was probably the only other year Cronin really COULD use the press.

We have been wearing teams out this year with the exception of laying down against Houston in the second half. One of the old knocks on Cronin was that we didn't close games out when we had a lead...but this year we have done that much better for the most part. I think this is due to other teams getting tired. There were times in the past we would build an early lead only to watch other teams come back quite often. I think that is because WE lacked depth and were getting tired.

If we were at full strength I would say press press press. Without Lawrence that hurts a little...but we are still 8 deep if GG is OK. Of course JJ and TR have to stay out of foul trouble no matter which style we play.

Agree with pretty much everything you said. I love the press, but depth and foul trouble for our post players is a big consideration, especially when we don't have JL.

Yah...we could lay off the press a little while JL is out...or we could try and keep JJ and TR out of the fray by playing smart. I agree with you...the most important thing right now is having JJ and TR on the court. That is our Kryptonite while JL is out...although we do have "Big Dave and the New Zone" if we get in trouble. Last year Big Dave averaged over 10 minutes. Look how far we have come.

Can anyone name a team that presses off a missed shot?

I've seen UL do it. But I'm not sure if anyone is saying they need to press off a missed shot. I'm certainly not. My point is there are plenty of opportunities to press if you really want to. Whether it's a made shot, out of bounds, turnover, etc. The cliche of "you have to make shot to press" is outdated and inaccurate. It's almost as bad as "it doesn't matter who starts but who finishes". These saying become trendy then everyone starts saying them. I'm not even a big fan of the press, but the fact is if a team really wants to press there are plenty of opportunities to do so (oh, and it does matter who starts).

TheLongHaul, I haven't ever seen anyone press after a missed shot. How does this work? I have seen teams pick up full court and guard after a missed basket. I've also seen teams trap at mid court but never have I seen teams set up a press after a missed shot. Very difficult. I may be confusing full court pressure with a press.

Pressing = full court pressure, there are just variations of it. You don't have to trap to press. That being said, I've seen teams press after missed FT's. I don't think I've seen a team apply true full court pressure/trap after a normal missed shot (except at the end of games when losing, obviously).

I got Ya. thanks

I think the reason Cronin says we can't press after a missed shot is because the way he prepares his team to get into position to press is off an inbounds play. You certainly can pressure the ball after a missed shot. And assuming the other team rebounds and then holds the ball and waits for the pg to come get the ball, which many teams do, then you can easily get your defense into position to press. If the other team rebounds and turns and gets the ball up court quickly then you're not going to be in position to press. But I think in our case, our guys are only trained to press on an inbounds play and therefor if we don't make the shot or the ball go out of bounds off the miss then we won't press.
