Trade rumor is that a trade talk fell through between reds and phillies. Could still happen did not hear who they wanted from the reds. It was for Byrd.

Walt heard the screaming from the fans for byrd and wanted to please us. too bad that was 1 1/2 years ago walt. Change your hearing aid, its picking up late signals again

Great move imo. Nothing wrong with using Lively as a trade piece. Byrd is above average LF and I guess the Phillies will pay some. He also has an $8 million team option next year...but he will be 38.

I think it's better than no move but I'm not high on Byrd at his age duplicating his numbers from last year. But he does give us some power and should be able to play 150 plus games. That is an upgrade.

185 strikeouts and 35 walks last year.

Yep and a .264 average. Really more of what we already have on this team with some pop. Reds need to get on base guys. Look what happened when Choo was here. We have a team that will eat up bad pitching but night in night out will still struggle to score because we're waiting around for the three run Homer with nobody on base.

I'd like to see
1. Hamilton CF
2. Frazier 3B
3. Votto 1B
4. Byrd LF
5. Mesoraco C
6. Phillips 2B
7. Bruce RF
8. Cozart/Suarez SS
9. P

I know that isn't what it will be, but it is what I would do.

i feel the exact same way you do.

Frazier and Mesoraco are good on base guys. Byrd is average (career .333). His OPS+ is over 100 all the time. With healthy Votto, this is a nice upgrade.

Hamilton
Phillips
Votto
Mesoraco
Frazier
Byrd
Bruce
Cozart
pitcher

That's my lineup as of now. If Bruce shows he can hit again I'd move him up, if Phillips can't hit I would put Frazier second but as of now I like him in the middle of the lineup as he is more vetsatile.

Cozart is definately suspect as well. If he gets off to a slow start, I look at the shortstop we got from Detroit (Surez) and immediately insert him into the starting rol. Cozart is one of the biggest rally killers on the planet.

Phillips is a disaster in the 2 hole. he hits into a lot of double plays. Phillips should be in the 7 or 8 spot, but you will have to renegotiate his contract for the "super star" to allow that

Howard trade to Baltimore

According to a report by MASN's Roch Kubatko, the Phillies recently tried to package Howard with outfielder Marlon Byrd in trade talks with Baltimore, but the discussions went nowhere. The Phillies subsequently dealt Byrd to Cincinnati for minor league pitcher Ben Lively- that was the hold up on the trade

I get what you're saying and don't disagree with the philosophy but who hits second then? Most people say Votto or Frazier. I say no to Votto because for one he's too slow and two if you successfully run Hamilton he is a 95% sure thing for a walk. Frazier I don't like there because he actually has power and run producing ability. He led the team in homers last year, although Mesoraco had a much better ratio per/ab. That's why I put them 4 and 5. Phillips is a smart hitter and can and will adjust his swing to situational hit. In the two hole, with Hamilton on, I think he'll buckle down and be a better on-base type hitter. Basically I think Phillips still can be a healthy part of a good line-up. He's not going to carry a line-up, but I think he is more saavy a hitter than to stick in the seven or worse eight slot. Plus you can run Hamilton in front of Phillips or hit and run as Phillips is good at that. I think Phillips numbers got messed up hitting him fourth so much.

The Reds should've gotten an on-base guy to hit second. Instead we got another power/strike out guy. Although, honestly had we signed Aoki or someone of that nature, I would be tempted to bat him leadoff and bat Hamilton eighth until he can get on-base at a .330 clip or better. .292 doesn't cut it for me no matter how fast you are especially when you're caught stealing 30% of the time. I think Hamilton will get smarter on the base paths but I honestly don't think he'll ever be a hitter and get on base that much. I hope I'm wrong.
