Rubles will play over JJ. He is way better than him. One of the bigs is going to have to step up. Neither JJ or Rubles can't play the 5. Here is to hoping.

Wouldn't have to play a conventional 5. I don't know why people are stuck on that. The NBA is shifting to a this type of line up.

JJ isn't big enough to guard the bigs and he isn't good enough offensively to provide a break even situation.

You don't guard one on one. You protect and jump passing lanes. The Miami Heat do just fine with no 5 and playing essentially a stretch 4 at the 5 spot. The game is changing guys.

I'm a big fan of his, but I don't think Shaq starts next year. He'll be our instant offense guy off the bench and will play a lot, but I don't see Mick starting him.

Guyn
SK
Rubles
Lawrence
JJ

i have to disagree about Shaq...i truly believe UC would have had better final stretch if Shaq would have seen more minutes...his skill set, length, and leaping ability creates difficulties for opposing defenses...

and can someone please clarify why so many people think Rubles can bring the ball up the floor?...i still want him down low or around the free throw line, not dribbling the ball, especially until he stops trying to imitate a cross over which he tried to do numerous times last year...with that saidm, i see him getting a lot of minutes after his defensive play and rebounding last year, and deservedly so, but i pray that he does not dribble the ball beyond the 3pt line...if the Cats are in position where they need a forward to bring the ball up the floor, Shaq will be the guy...his ball handles were visibly more solid than Rubles last year...

getting very excited the season to start...really enjoying the "buzz" this offseason already...

Go Bearcats!

He will get ate up and exposed. This is far from the Pro game. He'll also be on the bench with 2 fouls 5 minutes into the game. He ain't starting and if we have to go with him in the middle for long stretchs we will be in trouble. Please stop this nonsense. He isn't anywhere near physical enough to play the 5 for extended periods. Rubles would be a better option he is much stronger.

JJ played against Marquette at the 5 all of OT. He actually did a very good job and played some sound defense against Davante Gardner.

Some of you are so stuck in the past you can't see the game changing. There aren't many true 5's anymore. I'll leave it at that.

Jeff not stuck in the past at all. Just not foolish enough to think a 6'7 190 pound center will be abel to defend the post. Especialy when he offers nothing offensively. He isn't even a good rebounder. He is a good off the ball defender that gets a lot of blocks from behind. He will get ate up by big post players. Quit trying to fit square pegs in round holes. Now I'll leave it at that.

Gardner backed him down constantly in that game. He can't defend good big post up players. Not even close. we won that game because marq. was god awful shooting the ball in first half.

Justin Jackson can only thrive in the offense when their is an actual big man in the game. JJ was good here when we had Yancy because when yancy got the ball down low he was hard to guard. So that required another defender to slide off his man leaving someone open. That is also what I believe SK needs to be at his best as well.

I agree with Jeff. If Mick plays JJ at the 5 and the team plays like Louisville did this year (press all game long) then you don't need a big bruiser at the 5. You will force other teams to make personnel decisions and play out of their comfort zone.

No big man wants to be down low they want everyone to be amazed at their 3pt. shot and ball skills. The game is faster and younger players are more interested in taking you off the dribble. the move is valued as much as scoring now. Teams must adjust to facing so many looks. Shoot some damn free throws sometimes as well.

First of all you keep bringing JJ up not me. My only point and it is simply true, is that you don't have to have a true 5 in todays game. It is not about fitting square pegs in round holes. It's about how the game has evolved. A true 5 is now a luxury not a necessity. That is why people's hopes are so high for Strickland. Even kids that play the 5 now for the most part are not camped out underneath. Yes, there are exceptions, but many teams are going with 2 fours or a 4 and face up 5 because that is what's available and that is the trend in basketball. With todays size, speed and athleticism teams are trying to open the court.

Jason being forced to play that way and saying the game is changing ore two different things.

take a look at the elite 8

Mich. Mcgary

Witchita st. Carl hall 6'8' 240

Fla. Patrick Young 6'9' 250

Duke Plumlee

Ohio st. Amir williams

Marq. Gardner

Syracuse: christmas 6'9' 242

Louisville Deig.

There is your 2013 elite 8 no way could JJ even comes close to guarding any of those guys much less score or board consistently. He would get ate up at his weight.

The game ain't changing that much. Sure you want a mobile big.Who can guard and defend but he ain't 6'7 and weighing les then 200 lbs. JJ is not a good post up defender and will be over matched if forced to play the 5. Has nothing to do with the game changing.

Also the heat have a physical mismatch of there own he is called The king. 6'7 and 250 and unguardable.

and outside of Gardner and Dieng not a true post up 5 among them. Thanks for making my point. Either rebounding and defensive specialist or face up players that score off put backs.

jeff taht isn't by design that they are gong smaller it is because there isn't enoughof them. the goods ones are one and done. Look at the elite 8. All had big men. Don't confuse height with weight. JJ isn't equipped with enough A## to guard the 5 or board. Do you need a big 5 to win I thnk you need a space eater. JJ is not it. We were a much better team with Yancy a he wasn't a post player but he didn't get push off the block either. You keep saying he is going to play the 5 not me.

LOOK AT THEIR GIRTH> Jeez you can't be that blind. they would eat him alive.

No I said Lawrence and Rubles will play if Strickland isn't ready.
