State of the team

I remember the year Kenyon went down vividly. We were listening to the game at work in the conference room because we were all UC fans. Also remember just prior to the final they were interviewing the two coaches and Tom Izzo said (and I'm paraphrasing) "if Kenyon Martin doesn't break his leg we may be having a different conversation." Still my biggest disappointment as a Bearcat fan since I started following them as a 9 year old in 1973.

I was a freshman at UC that year. It stills upsets me to this day. I've not been able to let go of it and probably never will. They were the hands down favorite to win the whole thing before he broke his leg. What a great team.

Jeff I was just in 5th Grade and our teacher at the time was a big UC fan, so we were listening to it. I think we all remember where we were that day. So many what ifs from that year...

Funny you mention that. I believe I was in 4th grade, and my Xavier grad teacher heard about it on the radio in class and LAUGHED. Not like a chuckle either, she hysterically laughed. Pretty much in my 10-year-old face (she knew I was a big UC fan even at that age; it was all I wore to school). I remember going out to my mom's car when she picked me up from school and I just immediately started sobbing. I was beyond devastated.

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is why I will always passionately root against Xavier. I hope they never win another game and their program vanishes into oblivion.

My Man!!!

It changed his legacy and the direction of our program when Kenyon went down... We should definitely have 3 National Championships. Who knows how else it impacted the 2000s and today

Before kenyon went down we started getting beat first weekend. Fortson last year against Mississippi state is when it all started going downhill.

Luck has a lot to do with it. Some of the success Huggins had in recruiting was based off of his Final 4 in 1992. Of course much of that was built on Juco talent which was a much better source for talent back then.

However in '92 the highest seed we played until we got to the Final 4 was a 5 seed and we played them in the second round. We played a 13, 5, 9, and 6 to get there...so we were the highest seed in our first 4 games as a 4 seed.

That was the year that put UC back on the national radar in a big way and you have to give credit to Huggs for getting us in good shape to make that happen and then to capitalize on it with recruiting. I believe that is what Cronin needs right now...some chips to fall his way so he can cash in on it. A perfect storm like 1992. Not sure I think that will happen this year but who knows maybe within the next 2.
College basketball is down this year outside of Kentucky. We have guards to make run this year.

Satterfield elevated the entire team

Man and I think Xavier went deep that year. We still should've beaten iowa state with or without martin. Only thing I hated about that team was Huggins waited to late to feature Johnson

I believe it was Tulsa and yes they should have still won the game.

We are one of 11 teams to make the tourny 5 straight years. All of which i believe we had ten seed or lower(so we arent sneaking in) with everyone coming back next year. Id say the state of the program is pretty good

Yes I would wholeheartedly agree. When only 11 of over 300 schools do this, you see its not an easy feat.

No Morman in the post season I gotta believe he is gone.

Coach Cronin was very blunt about kids who are not coachable: If they're not, they're gone. Whenever I hear that a player has been suspended (Moore, Morman), it's probably because of this. At this point I'm not willing to completely write off Morman, but a decision about his future will be forthcoming.

I hope Morman returns I really think he can be a good player but I applaud this staff's willingness to cut locker room cancers lose and those unwilling to adhere to program expectations.

I honestly thought he was going to be a key player this year. Maybe he thought that too. Apparently we were both incorrect. The team is doing just fine without him, although I still feel he could be an important addition if he has his head together and pulls his oar with the rest of the folks in the boat.

As someone said: "Cemeteries are full of people who thought they were indispensable"

I saw a quote about how the team began to play as one and for each other during the second half of the Houston game. You have to have everyone on the same page to be a championship team. Cincinnati is about "team" not about a player auditioning himself.

I hope Morman can get things figured out and return. He has alot of upside. With that said, we don't need any me first players on the court or in the locker room. This team collectively started playing better team ball once he was removed from the equation. I don't think for one minute he was 100 percent of the problem, but it sure isn't a coincidence.
