Thought I'd make a thread for people who are interested in how the new guys are looking in the summer league. I know it has been confirmed that Sanders, Thomas, Guyn, and Davis will be in town so I assume they are participating and I expect a few of the returnees to play as well.

The first SLATS game started at 2 pm today. Unfortunely I couldn't make it so if the people who were able to attend could provide some of us with a summary it would be great.

was at the games today...here are my observations:

Gaines - very athletic...still very raw offensively

Jackson - seems to have more body control

Shaq - great hops...very good dribbling/ball control...competitive

Sanders - did not get a real good look at him...seems to use his body weight down low

Davis - can handle the ball...showed a decent shot at times

Guyn - by far the most impressive of the freshman to me...his motor/speed was very high/fast...seemed to have good ball skills...intense on defense

Small sample and very early in the summer, but it was great to have UC basketball back in action (in some manner)...if no one has ever been to the Deveroes league, i highly recommend it if you enjoy the sport of basketball.

Go Bearcats!

As you probably know I have been high on Ge for a long while. The purpose he plays with is exactly why. He is going to be a lock down defender before it's all said and done.

Thanks for the recap. I heard from some friends that were there that Guyn was clearly the best player on the floor and that Shaq really is aggressive on offense.

I had the same take (and not cause we were sitting next to each other the whole time). Was surprised to see Gates playing. Was hoping to see Dixon and more so Kilpatrick, but hopefully they are somewhere playing against better competition. I've never seen Jackson so non-hyper. He still was quick and aggressive and did get a mysterious technical but he didn't seem over the top. He was alot more controlled and we will need that out of him. Shaq reminded me a little of Jackson just with his motor. He and Gelawn will be fun to watch in years to come. The most impressive kid might have been the dude from Wright State...about 6 foot white kid throwing down some nasty putback dunks.

Thanks for the recap everyone, really appreciate it! Can someone give the numbers of some of the players in that video so I can identify the guys. I think the only person I noticed was JJ and that was bc his body posture haha.

Guyn - #1
Sanders - #2
Shaq - #3
Davis - #4
Justin - #5
Yancy - #13

I've always thought JJ was just going to have a spectacular career here. I'm anxious to get to a summer league game and get my eyes on the younguns, but now I'm excited to see a more controlled Jackson, too.

I wish the summer league was a good enviroment to see Gaines in because he is going to be really important next year. Not saying he will win a lot of games, but backing up the center and point guard positions next year is the #1 concern of mine for the team. The true freshmen will have their moments but we need consistancy at those two positions.

What I saw on tape reaffirms what I saw in his HS career: JD isn't going to blow by many guards with his speed but few are going to be able to match his strength from that position.

Totally agree with you on this. My thought is Yancy, Jackson and Mbodji will be our primary 3 in the low post with Gaines getting between 10-12 minutes of playing time as the roster currently stands.

I'm not as worried about the point this year as I was last. Guyn and Davis will both see time but in the end I think Guyn will emerge as the primary back up at point. Davis is the better shooter but I think Guyn's ability to play defense and push the ball will put him in the drivers seat for more minutes.

As always I caution people to not get too caught up in the DSL. Sander's game is not suited to summer league play and he will be in much better shape by the time the season starts. My one concern was, and is his quickness. His conditioning leaves something to be desired so I want to see where he is after the summer and formal conditioning. My guess is his body will look much different by mid-October.

Many of us have said Thomas has the highest ceiling but he has to gain strength. Organized game planning is a differnet animal then the DSL. It is why I said ultimately Guyn, Davis and Sanders will play the most, along with Mbodji.

I still look for a primarily veteran dominated team. Cash, Dixon, Kilpatrick, Thomas and Gates. Still think Moog will see significant minutes and Gaines getting those spot minutes. Parker is the wildcard to me. Guyn will play big minutes. Will Parker spell the 2/3 or will Davis see time at the 2?

Kilpatrick played ball in NYC. Don't worry about Kilpatrick. He is like many of the players Cronin has gotten...a gym rat.

I agree. The summer league is very uptempo, so it will make the quicker guys shine. As far as the back-up point guard, I agree that Guyn fits in better with the offense Mick wants to run. He's quicker, has better floor vision and probably will play better D against another PG, but I could see Davis emerging in late game situations (as an upper classmen) because he's probably more controlled and less likely to turn the ball over and I'll assume a better free-throw shooter.

One thing I noticed about Sanders was he seemed out of shape, like he still had some baby fat. Looks alot like Kilpatrick in the face. I did like his determination around the rim. If he's out of shape, he at least didn't seem lazy on the floor.

Wasn't really worried, just was hoping to see him play. With his work ethic, I'm sure he's playing somewhere. It's still early too, so no saying he won't show up at some point to play.

Both Sean and Yancy excite me for the coming season. Actually if this team can play defense I think it could be a special season.
