Yeah, comparing a freshmen with 3-4 games under his belt to a junior is stupid. But here we are. You have to compare them at the same point in their career. You also can’t make trades like Justin suggested. Like I said, I like kunkle but it’s hardly worth losing sleep over. Kunkle is average 7.5 pts per game as a junior. I think mason can do that by the time his a junior or at least close. Did mason have an incredible game last night? No, not at all. But he didn’t look like a scrub either like some suggested before they even seen him play
Nah he most definitely understand the game. Once it slows down he go be major piece off bench! No scrubs on team at all right now. Saunders can’t score but he can dribble better than most Cronin Pgs and he go be lockdown defender by next year.

Honest question, do you just watch the whole game waiting for diarra to play?

I thought Vogt was terrible in the first half also, but he was great in the second half. His size really effected temple. Diarra played well when he was in and should have played more but Vogt was pretty good in the second half.

Harvey should have played more too. He was our best player for stretches and hardly played the second half. I wonder if it was COVID related.
Vogt won us game! Blame coach for not playing them together or dou for not working on his game to play the 4. Vogt had nothing to do with dou not playing last night. I actually like the 10-11 deep lineups. Once they all seven more that’s go be key to run like horses. We have the guards, get another tall wing and big that can defend, I’ll take my chances with coach getting job done! He’s playing walk ons(and WINNING), even Justin have to admit no way in hell Cronin makes that adjustment and play walk ons. He would’ve played his team of only 9 scholarships to being with 6 available players all game and lost!

lol at the love fest over a junior average 7.5 pts/game, 1.5 reb/game, 1.5 asst/game, and shooting 28% from 3. yea, that's exactly what this team is missing...hell these same posters were trying to run Vogt out of here last year when his numbers were better.

Vogt like most players looked like they wasn’t ready or in shape to start season. He’s starting look like last season 1st half form. He was battling in paint last night without out fouling like never before. The break was a blessing in disguise for team I believe.

Yeah I could see if we had winning team and he was missing piece. Carlik Jones/Tate/kunkel would’ve looked nice though! If we had real big instead of kid that quit , that roster would’ve been top 10! We needed all 3 not just one so I’m not mad.

Yeah, kunkle would be third out of those 3. I don’t understand the love affair with him, I guess he hit a game winner.

I won’t speak to the quality of bigs but the quantity Brannen had to start the year was more than enough. Vogt, Dou, Lakhin, Rap, Eason, Davenport. All were 4s or 5s coming in.

Now that Davenport can shoot we can play him at the 3...but that was a bit unexpected.

I remember a time when Justin Jackson was moved to the 5 because the coach didn’t have the spot filled. Rubles was the PF. Lawrence a frosh and Nyarcuk. Two busts and two good bigs.

We had a pretty good year lucky no injuries or we would have been screwed. I like having 5 bigs...3 of them big enough to man the 5.

Vogt's +/- in the 2nd half was -1. But sure, he won us the game. Just like last year, even at his best, Vogt is generally a net neutral.

Temple was his best case scenario, a team with an undersized big, who can't shoot and (for some unknown reason, probably involving bad coaching) they tried to pound it inside anyway - where Vogt is actually good on defense. Even with all that going for him, he was -1 in the 2nd half (to be fair, he would have been +0 if not for techs). Since he was bad in the first half, that left him at -6 for the game (cancelled out by Diarra's +6).

Just like I said last year, Vogt just isn't that good. Vogt playing "well" is him not hurting the team too much. I want a center who is actually giving positive contributions and Vogt isn't that center and never will be. Diarra is the only viable center on the team for next year, he should be getting as many minutes as he can take. Especially when he outplays Vogt, which he did in the first half (and probably would have in the 2nd if he'd been given a chance).

As for Harvey, I agree he should be getting more minutes and if he doesn't soon I will add him to the guys I complain about not getting enough minutes. But 18 minutes in first game post Covid is about what I expected. I think he will get more minutes in the coming weeks.

I believe I've said this before, but I don't watch for Diarra. I do watch the center position more so than others. I've always enjoyed watching centers more than any other positions, maybe because of watching guys like Fortson and Martin when I was young.

I also enjoy watching centers because they impact the game more than any other position on the defensive end. Their impact is the hardest to quantify statistically on both ends.

I enjoy watching Diarra - and Eason - more so than Vogt because they actually play defense well (though Eason struggled last night). Even when Vogt has a "good" game on defense, he is getting attacked. Teams go at Vogt, because he is our weakest link on defense (Justin provided the synergy numbers that backed this up last year, I'd guess it's true this year as well). Even against Temple, who for some unknown reason played right into Vogt's strength, Vogt's defense wasn't great.

+/- stats from one game aren't really useful. If you have them over the course of a season, there might be something worth discussing. And anyway, we lost the second half by 4 pts. So if Vogt's +/- was -1, his replacements at the 5 were -3.

The stats we do have over multiple seasons aren't great for Diarra. He fouls a ton and is a turnover machine. Yeah, he might be the guy on the current roster most likely to play the 5 next year, but I expect that to change. I have to think we bring somebody in, probably a transfer. I'd like to see him play more than 8 minutes, but I don't think we should try to groom him to take over the bulk of interior minutes if it makes us a worse team right now.

Diarra isnt any good man. Vogt isn’t either. We all want a good big. Having said that, I wouldn’t mind seeing more dou going forward. Let’s see what we got.

Last night Vogt was a good matchup. They couldn’t really do anything with his size. I get it, his +/- wasn’t good. If you watched the game and know anything about basketball, Vogt clearly had an impact on the game. If you can’t see that, I don’t know what to tell you.

+/- definitely isn’t a good indicator after 5 minutes or whatever dou played. Sometimes I think these guys just look at certain stats that help their argument. I wouldn’t mind seeing more dou, but he just isn’t what skyblade wants him to be.

If we played diarra and got kunkel, we might win the whole thing

It's funny how some arguments never go away, like Diarra or Brannen vs Cronin or Xavier mid-major recruits, but others suddenly disappear. Last week people were wanting Eason to play the 4 and have the offense run through him. The guy fouled out in 7 minutes.

I’m always up for an argument. It’s fun but some of these don’t even make sense. Cronin vs brannen I get. It’s far too early but people just miss the consistency of cronin. Even if we weren’t great we were decent. I get it. The fascination with kunkel and diarra I’ll never understand. Kunkel is fine, but we shouldn’t even think twice about him. Dou has had 4 good games in 4 years.

I want Eason to play the 4, but not for the offense to run through him. The reason he fouled out is precisely because he played the 5. Forrester was a bad matchup for him, Forrester was big enough to give Tari problems and experienced/skilled enough on the interior. Eason fouled out largely because he was playing out of position and asked to defend someone he couldn't.

Well in the first half Vogt was -5, Eason +5 and Diarra +6. So his replacements were +11 in the first and +8 overall compared to Vogt being in. Maybe his replacements would have done better in the 2nd half, but Diarra didn't play. As I've said, I don't know of a site that tracks +/- but I'd be willing to bet Vogt's season numbers aren't great. I only know last night because I was watching the replay and tracking it.

Diarra's stats will settle down as he gets minutes. As for transfers, given how Brannen has done with them so far (especially big men), I'm not holding my breath.

A lot of his fouls are dumb/careless plays. Same as Keith. 4 or 5, dumb is dumb. He will learn. I thought he got some tough calls also.

I don't remember all 5 of his fouls, but one was going for an offensive rebound, one was going for a help block, and one was a charge. None of those had to do with who he was guarding, and he could have picked those up playing the 4 too. He fouled out because he made typical freshman mistakes.

I tracked +/- because I was watching a replay. It's the first game I didn't watch live all season. Easier to track +/- when you can start/stop and skip backwards. I'd use +/- more if I knew of a site that tracked it.

I didn't go looking for the stat, I just figured it would be a fun thing to track while watching.
