Uh.........Kilpatrick redshirted, was labeled the "best player" but couldn't play, and made 2nd team All-Big East his first year of starting.

Same is being said about Shaquille Thomas being the best player on the team, but he is redshirting. If it is true, it will only make this team better next season.

What I wish would happen is that Gaines or Ellis would pull a Kenyon Martin, and make themselves into great players because they have the needed athleticism. I loved the UC days where a Bobby Brannen or Eric Hicks would suddenly emerge into a stud their junior or senior year.........same with Kenyon. We need these big men to develop badly.

his point is that most players (not gaines obviously) who redshirt or transfer in are hyped to extreme levels in their practice year....vincent banks was all world, james white was an all american, mike williams was far and away our best player, cashmere would have won us 5 more games if he hadn't torn his knee up (then subsequently couldn't hold the job his freshman year), ibrahima thomas was one of our better players in practice...

sure there are exceptions to the theory- kilpatrick namely. but people on other message boards are already saying ellis is our best post player in practice, mick is saying on the radio that shaq thomas would have started on this years team...the point is, everyone knows that cronin exaggerates on the radio and post games. huggins did the exact same thing. part of it is out of frustration, part of it is to keep fans interested.

sorry- but shaq thomas didn't play a lick of defense in high school and would not be supplanting kilpatrick or parker in this lineup. the point ME80 is trying to make is that every year people get smitten with players we have on the roster but don't have on the court yet. 95% of the time, their abilities get inflated by radio shows and message boards, and they are viewed as the "answer" for the next season, and then they are okay but not great or put up pedestrian numbers when they can actually play, and people are disappointed. point is- just manage your expectations.

You must sit in on practice every day to have all this "inside info" into just how good a player like Shaq Thomas is.

If all you are going on is HS then I am not concerned. SK couldn't shoot the three in HS and he'd be the first to tell you that. Guys do get better in practice, especially in college.

I am not expecting much from Thomas. Anything more than 2-4 points a game is great from me.

I'm sure you wouldn't have had a problem with what he said had he said that Shaq could be all-american next year. But if it isn't a glowing report, all of a sudden opinions aren't welcome. For some reason you get all defensive anytime someone says anything remotely negative.

Oh, and SK could shoot the 3 in high school and I doubt he'd be the first person to tell you that. He wasn't the greatest, but he wasn't terrible either.

I've heard him say he wasn't very good at it and he put a lot of hours in trying to fix that. No I don't have a link, just saying.

He wasn't "very good" at it but he could definitely make them. Saying he couldn't shoot the 3 in high school is selling him way short.

I would have a huge problem with this statement because it is setting a kid up for failure.

"But he wasn’t always a good long-range shooter.

“Before I came here, I was a driver,” Kilpatrick said. “My freshman year when I redshirted I did a lot more shooting and Coach helped me out on that. I’m pretty happy that the shooting came out the way it did.”

He was known as a slasher coming out of high school. But he could still shoot the 3, he just struggled with consistency. He is much better at it now but still struggles at times with consistency.

He wasn't nearly as good of a shooter. Period. Bad shooters can make a few. Its called variance. Good shooters can miss quite a few. Its called variance. You gotta be able to make them over the long haul (pun intended). SK can now do that.

Let's get back on track...

Let's let our recruiting experts rank the order in which we are targeting the bigs. As well...let us know which players we are most likely to get. Which players would committ tomorrow?

Anyone have any info on Providence's involvement? Their fans sure seem to think he's theirs to lose. They are in Jakarr Sampson's final two with Kansas and they already have two 5-star commitments. We all know highly rated players like to play with each other. They could be a team to keep an eye on over the next few months.

No one said he hasn't improved. Period. SK wasn't a bad shooter before. Period. Saying he was a bad shooter or couldn't shoot from the outside is flat out wrong.

By his own admission, and he gave thanks to Conin, He is a much better shooter.

My take:
1-Obekpa
2-Mitchell
2A-Rubles
4-Taylor - grades are a cooncern.

UC/UConn/Providence. Any of these schools could land him. Providence is doing a great job recruiting. They will likely lose guys off this years team.

I will assume that is the order we would like to get them. In order of most likely to commit if UC says let's go? Does this seem about right?

Rubles
Taylor
Mitchell
Obepka

I have heard in the past Rubles is ready to go UC. I would assume we could get Taylor if we really wanted him. There are a lot of teams going after Obepka so that situation can change at any moment. Mitchell seems to have a bit shorter list than Obepka.
