Chris Obekpa (Our Savior New American / 2012) – According to his coach Obekpa has received the qualifying SAT score he was hoping for and his already long school list should grow even longer once that information trickles out there. He already holds offers from Connecticut (Husky Championship Gear), Cincinnati (UC Tickets), St. John’s, UCLA, Providence (PC Tickets), Florida, and Georgia Tech along with significant interest from Kentucky. Obekpa wants to take his time and visit as many schools as he can during the college basketball season to get a feel for the environments. Since he did not grow up in this country Obekpa is not as familiar with the major schools as many other kids are and he wants to use the visitation process to get a better feel for each school. No decision should be expected any time soon and he definitely plans to sign in the spring after his visits.

Well maybe the Ibrahima Thomas and Cheikh Mbodj connection might start finally paying off. Let's hope.

I hear they are putting on a strong push and that UC is in his top 3 schools. Heard this from one of my fringe sources but the couple times he's passed info to me has been good. Better?

Senior, Our Savior New American (Centereach, N.Y.)

Few players can match Obekpa's strength and energy. Even fewer can replicate his otherworldly athleticism. The Nigerian native is a two-way terror, soaring for highlight-reel dunks on one end and emphatic blocks on the other. He could soon be taking flight in the Big East: Obekpa is weighing offers to West Virginia, Cincinnati, St. Johns and UConn, among others.

very much so. thank you!

EvanDanielscout: Chris Obekpa is a tough one to evaluate. On one hand he is an elite shot blocker w/ crazy bounce & athleticism. Other hand can't score.

2012 Our Savior New American (NY) PF Chris Obekpa had 16 points, 14 rebounds & 12 blocks today.

At some point, the Ibrahima Thomas, Cheikh Mbodj connections might start paying off with some of these Africans.

Im not high on Obepka... he is a good rebounder but IMO an overrated defender and may never come around on the offensive end.

Regardless, he is still one of the better big man prospects on the board that we are in a good position at this time...

Obviously, the JC ranks could offer a big.

I think Mick needs to stop just signing a prospect just because he has an open scholly and a need. Sooner or later he'll get to a point where that prospect may be taking up a scholly Mick could use on a better recruit.

That's assuming he can sign a better recruit. Eventually you have to take what you can get. He didn't get any of his prime 2012 targets so what makes someone believe he'll get his prime 2013 targets?

With how the 2013 class is rounding out so far Mick has a chance to have a HELL of a class next season.

while i like the sound of this, lets keep in mind that we also said the same about the 2011 class and 2012 class. each year when we miss on a few of our big targets, we always say that the next class looks to be loaded for us...and then we end up missing on our high end prospects. which is fine, and i understand, the program is not established enough right now to beat out of UofL or KU for a recruit. but, we can't keep focusing on next year's recruiting.

obekpa is very suspect on offense. however, beggars cannot be choosers right now. uc missed on its big man targets (not sure why they ever wanted hammond so bad to be honest), and he is what we have. uconn, sju, memphis, and georgia tech have all offered him. he may not be a polished prospect, but its not like no one wants him. there are no great bigs left that we have a shot with, and given what is out there- he is about as good as it gets. everyone wants to get a JUCO big, but its not like there are a wealth of polished JUCO bigs available. in fact, there aren't many at all these days who are good enough to come in and be really good players.

I agree dp. We said the same thing for the 2011 and 2012 classes. 2011 was an above average class but I don't think it was close to an elite class. 2012 is empty right now. I haven't heard to many elite players from the 2013 class that have UC high on their list. Granted it could be just because I've been focusing on 2012, but who are UC's most legitimate targets for 2013?
