With the way things have gone recently in our recruitment of kids who are on a lot of radars...I would bet that we don't land this kid. Hopefully the tide is turning with our recent success on the court...but I am not sure we are there yet.

I would LOVE to have this guy though. This is my type of player. I would rather have a defensive and rebounding stud than a guy who is mildly good at everything...including scoring. You can get plenty of points by playing aggressively around the bucket. Eventually you can coach offense.

Chris Obekpa, the top shot-blocking big man available in the Class of 2012, took an official visit to DePaul last weekend and has four officials remaining.

The 6-foot-9 Obekpa, averaging 12 points, 15 rebounds and 9.5 blocks for Our Savior New American (13-1), is considering 12 schools and no other officials have been mapped out, Our Savior assistant Eric Jaklitsch told SNY.tv.

“Everybody’s trying to get us back to campus,” Jaklitsch said. “It’s tough when we’re playing and everything.”

Obekpa’s list currently includes DePaul, St. John’s, Seton Hall, UConn, West Virginia, Cincinnati, UCLA, Texas, Oregon, Florida and Kentucky. Everyone but Kentucky has offered, Jaklitsch said.

Obekpa may take a visit to West Virginia at some point and is considering whether to attend Saturday’s Louisville-Seton Hall game.

He also plans to visit St. John’s again, although that could be an unofficial. St. John’s coach Steve Lavin has targeted Obekpa along with JaKarr Sampson, Ricardo Gathers and Orlando Sanchez.

As for the DePaul visit, Obekpa traveled there after playing in Memphis last weekend.

“He flew from Memphis to Chicago,” Jaklitsch said. “He doesn’t say much. He enjoyed it. He got a chance to see Chicago. He watched their game against South Florida [a 75-59 loss]. He took a tour of the campus. He met [2013 commit] Billy Garrett.”

Still, the Nigerian native remains wide open and will wait until after the season to finalize his plans.

“He’s still considering a dozen schools,” Jaklitsch said. “he wants to explore his options and look at everything and weigh the pros and cons like everybody else. He’s only been in the U.S. a year and a half.”

I would say Cincinnati has a great shot at Obekpa. If I had to say which school Obekpa will commit to I would say the Bearcats as of now but things can change. HOWEVER I have heard Florida is gaining steam on him

If it comes down to UC or UConn, I see UC. UConn is banned from the NCAA tourney next season and Calhoun has medical problems that are keeping him from coaching.

Does Florida look at Obekpa as a 2nd option if they don't win the Nerlens Noel sweepstakes? They seem to have a lack of size on their roster.

I'm really hoping UC can close the deal on this kid. Rebounding, blocks, and an intimidating presence could help out a whole lot. I'm sure like all freshman there would be a learning curve, much like our current class is going through, but he might be able to chip in some minutes as a first year. With Yancy leaving this year and Cheikh next year it would be nice to add some size now.

Nerlens Noel is going to UK. Mark it down. They will get him and probably Shabazz Muhammad who is the number one player in 2012. Some think UNLV could get him since he is from NV but what Cal wants Cal gets. They could be just as talented next year as this year. Hope Cal gets them in trouble before he leaves.

Think about this IF you follow UK at all... I forsee Davis and Jones entering the draft but I could see Kidd-Gilchrist and Teague staying. Here's you lineup next season IF Noel and Muhammad commits:

PG Teague
SG Lamb
SF Muhammad
F Kidd-Gilchrist
C Noel

with the bench being:
PF Alex Poythress
G Archie Goodwin
C Willie Cauley
PF Alex Wiltjer

LOOK OUT!!! This is more of the Calipari lineup of old where his offense thrives. A long athletic center who can score when needed but is a defensive/rebounding monster. Essentially two small forwards instead of a PF, a pure scoring shooting guard who can stroke it from outside and a great PG (teague still has time to improve). That bench could start for ANY college in america IMO. They are going to be scary good.

Yeah I think Kidd Gilcrist is gone for sure. Will be top 5 and if you followed him in high school his uncle who basically was playing the role of his dad died and his grandmother within a 3 month period. His family is poor and if he can go lottery he has too. Lamb is a first rounder for sure and I think he goes. Teague could leave but might stay. I have seen him ranked as a first rounder by nbadraft.net and keep in mind his brother Jeff who is not as good as Marquis left after 2 years ( only one starting) at Wake Forest.

I don't like Calipari and I still think he runs a dirty program. That said, the one thing I can respect is that he never tries to spin something to keep his players in school for one more year. If he thinks they are ready to go to the NBA, he basically tells them to get the hell out and go pro.

If UK wins the national title all the freshman (not including the foreign dude) plus Jones and Lamb will leave.

Of course he doesn't try to spin. That's his selling point to his recruits. Calipari sells one thing to recruits: get them to the NBA as fast as possible. That's why recruits go there.

He may be selling more than one thing to them. It also may have something to do with World Wide Wes and cheating. 2 of Cal's teams have had Final 4's vacated and Cal recently paid Memphis season ticket holders $100,000 to settle a lawsuit they filed against him.
