Here's a question I would be interested to see what fans think as things stand now. Assuming KJ keeps his starting role for the time being...what is your first option off the bench?

Jenifer comes in and Troy moves over or Cumberland comes in and Troy stays at PG?

Jenifer for me.

Jenifer for me.

I still don't think Jenifer has his confidence back completely. I was a little disappointed how he handled the press situations over the weekend. He looked a little unsteady and seemed to want the ball out of his hands. I was hoping to see someone who could just breakdown the press on his own. I'm not sure he pushes Caupain to the two. He may end up playing more two himself, especially if his threes continue to fall.

Interesting stat. There are 5 teams ranked 330 or lower in adjusted tempo but in the top 13 for offensive efficiency. St Mary's, Wisconsin, Virginia, Michigan, and Villanova.

4 are ranked lower than UC in tempo. If we can hold our efficiency numbers or get better...we can have a very good year.

It's tough for him to throw over or around defenders so his only real option is to break them down off the dribble.

I'm not sure I like a 5-10 shooting guard. Cumberland has 7 inches on him. Obviously percentage is a big key here too so...

I like Jenifer as the first option off the bench. He changes how the game flows immediately. Now, I would still put Cumberland in the starting lineup before Jenifer. I really like Jenifer being able to change the game off the bench as the first sub. And this would mean nearly no minutes for KJ.

When they are in the game together, we have two point guards. Simple as that. I would consider caupain as the de facto two guard, but it's still two point guards. In most motion offenses, your 1 and 2 move through all the same progressions. It hardly changes anything.

Really need him to step up his game. We have nice post play but need two of our guards to step up. I'm hoping he is one of them. I cringed on Sunday when he got his pocket picked and they laid it in. We need his minutes to be productive. He has shown flashes against the cupcakes over his tenure but we need him to elevate his game.

Brooks raised his PER to 17.5 last night. Was negative before the game. Quadri Moore is getting the bench treatment, rightfully so.

PER Through 6 Games:

Kyle Washington 31.4
Jacob Evans 30.5
Tre Scott 29.8
Jarron Cumberland 22.7
Gary Clark 19.3
Troy Caupain 17.3
Nysier Brooks 16.7
Justin Jenifer 10.3
Kevin Johnson 6.3
Quadri Moore 3.3

Looks like bearcats should slide back into the top 25 in the AP tomorrow, probably still be just out in the coaches poll though.

I think caupain hurts us the most right now, yes Clark has been struggling but I think caupain is just more inportant at this time.

We have played 6 games now which I think is a fair sample size even though we haven't played a lot of great competition.

With Washington dominating like he is Gary has been taking a back seat. Scott seems to be doing just as well in that role if not a little better. We have seen Gary do it for 2 years so I would rather have Gary in the game right now but I don't worry about Scott so much any more. So far Scott leads every per 40 minute stat on Gary except steals.

Starting to worry a little bit about Jenifer. He's got to do a better job of penetrating and creating assists. He's not helping much from a pass it around the perimeter option. I prefer Cumberland in that offensive scheme. KJ is starting to play a little better.

As of now I like Troy running point with Cumberland in the game (when KJ is not) if Jenifer is not going to create off the dribble. He's too short for the pass around the perimeter game. Cumberland seems better equipped for that type of game.

Nysier can help in specific circumstances but Scott seems better to me in most back up situations.

We need Troy to step up his game a little. He's the key to making things work best with Washington and Evans being primary options. We are going to need Troy to make this a special season. Clark and Scott seem to be filling the hustle role. Hopefully Cumberland gained some confidence in his last game.

If you take Washington and Evans out of the equation. Per 40 minutes...

Cumberland leads all other guards/wings in FG%, FTA, Steals, Blocks, TO's, and points.

Scott leads all other bigs in points, fouls, TO's, Blocks, assists, rebounds, and FG%.

Small sample size...but I would like to see them in the game more as we move forward until they prove they aren't really that good. Which is entirely possible and perhaps even likely. I could see Troy and Gary over time becoming our best PER options but after that point I don't see KJ, Jenifer, Brooks, or Moore besting these two in PER. On defense I could see KJ and maybe even Jenifer being better than Cumberland...but not Moore or Brooks better than Scott.

The advanced numbers don't love Caupain. His per 40 minutes numbers are pretty close to his actual stats bc he plays so many minutes. His PER is low bc he doesn't score efficiently. That may change but I'm not counting on it. I think he'll be 4th at best in PER.

You might be right Jacob. I was hoping not having to shoulder the load would help Troy become more efficient. In theory it should but so far he's not making that jump. I am still holding out hope...because I think we will need it for a special season.

Interesting comment from Cronin on the last game. Said it was the first time he saw the motion in the offense he was looking for in the second half. He said Scott was a big factor in that. He was running around setting picks to help the others get open. Cronin said he would be showing the guys the tape to show them why it was working.

Extra picks and passes can go a long way. I hope to see more of that motion in the future. We will need some wide open looks to beat ISU.

Where did you see his comments about Scott?

“In the second half, our motion offense was the best it has been all year. I can’t wait to get home and just turn the tape on. I think a lot of that has to do with Tre Scott’s willingness to be a soldier for our team and get other people open. It’s like we all have to jump into the pool and it’s cold and somebody has to go first. Someone has to get in there and try to get his teammate open and not worry about himself and Tre did a great job of that. The more it worked, the more it became contagious with guys trying to move the ball and get each other open. That was us at our best offensively, by far, in the second half. You are going to make more shots when you throw two or three more passes and you set two or more screens. You are going to make more shots because you are going to get better shots. His effort was great - nine points, nine rebounds, nine deflections, five blocked shots and four assists. I thought Tre did a great job, obviously, with Gary (Clark) out in the second half.
