Good to hear that he's a good guy. Say what you will, but Cronin has largely recruited good kids into the program. I loved Huggins, but we were always waiting for the other shoe to drop and wondering which guy on the team would be the next to do something stupid and embarrassing to the school. That has largely been absent from the program under Cronin (other than the obvious exception of the brawl with X - which they instigated and Gates finished btw).

I've heard and read nothing but good things about Washington. I think he'll be a vast improvement over Octavius offensively. Hopefully he can rebound and defend at a reasonable level also. I'm looking forward to watching this team.

Go Cats!

I sure hope the offense is there....everyone thinks he'll be an upgrade....wish there were stats to back that up.
Ellis has way better stats offensively - shot 55% from field vs. Washington's 45%...Ellis rebounded the ball far better than Washington, both serviceable free throw shooters for bigs

Some of that may be how they were used, the shots they took, Ellis' stats mostly from Jr, Sr years vs. Fr, So for Kyle

I'm sure Kyle has developed with his time with the Cats - just always a little nervous about projecting numbers that haven't been there before

Im not worried about it. Washington has way more offensive skills and bball IQ than Ellis. Not to mention, Ellis played so damn soft his senior year, he was a liability on offense. I think we will all be happy with the trade out.

Washington's points per game and rebounds would be close when you factor in the 7 min. per game difference. He shot 72% FTS. compared to Ellis 64%. Also played in tougher conference and was a Soph. compared to Ellis being at least a 5th year Senior. I for one am not worried.

I don't FG% is a perfect way to measure Ellis vs Washington. Ellis shot mostly 2 feet from the basket. Washington has a much deeper range. I'll take a versatile big who will shoot a lower percentage but be able to make more shots throughout the floor and space out the floor over a guy who literally clogged lanes and took bunny shots and hooks.

I like Ellis, both as a player and how he matured as a person but he got kinda soft his senior year. I'm not sure Kyle knows how to play with a low motor

I just hope Washington doesn't take a bunch of Caupain Specials (long 2s).

eFG%
Ellis
Career: 55%
SR Year: 54.7%

Washington
Career: 46.2%
SO Year: 48.3%

TS%
Ellis
Career: 58.5%
SR Year: 57.7%

Washington
Career: 48.2%
SO Year: 50.5%

Washington may have deeper range, but if he doesn't make tons of longer 2s and doesn't shoot many 3s, it doesn't do much good. Only 1 assist per 40 minutes his SO year too. Plus, 13.9 FGA/40 minutes, which would've only been behind Cobb last year.

It'll be interesting to see how Washington fits into the offense. Will he spend more time under the hoop, or 15 feet out? I do like that he only averaged 2.0 TO per 40 minutes, whereas Ellis averaged 3.3 per 40. Taking care of the ball that well as a frosh and soph is a good sign of maturity and basketball IQ.

I don't care about the numbers. It was tough to watch Ellis, and I really felt like he screwed up at the worse possible times. Iowa State for example. It would take some time, but I would love to see the actual numbers going against an Arkansas Pine Bluff team versus an Iowa State team. Basically when a game is on the line, versus padded stats. It could be said about any player, I get that but the screw-ups he had were on a different level. Just pathetic. He was exciting at times and I liked his energy but couldn't get over the dumb mistakes he had. I can understand why you all might think I am crazy for stating this, going off of someone I haven't seen really, but I have every ounce of confidence in the world that Washington will give us more than Ellis. We won't know until March, but there's no doubt it my mind. IQ alone will help tremendously.

Mark my word, screen shot this or what ever you need to do. No one will say they miss Ellis this year. Washington gives us more.

I think Washington's positive impact on team chemistry might just eclipse any numbers he puts up. He just has the appearance of a leader and the kind of guy that can hold a team together. His attitude and excitement he displayed on the bench last year was amazing. If he brings that same attitude to the floor, I think we'll have something special.

Agreed!

I agree L-T. Ellis did a very good job last year toning down his tantrums but they were still there and you could tell when he was frustrated. I know he had troubles in his life so I won't judge.

I do think Washington will be tougher mentally and a more positive figure on the court and locker room. Ellis was emotional but I think Washington will bring a different type of positive chemistry which can't be underestimated how it affects the team as a whole. I think he will put up similar stats but will add something invaluable for chemistry and digging deeper to close out games.

I think we upgrade at 3 positions by virtue of one more year of experience. I believe Washington will prove to be an upgrade overall when considering stats and chemistry. I hope Cumberland will be an upgrade over Cobb but not sure that will happen in year 1...but maybe improvement in KJ can offset that and make it a wash.

I believe we downgrade in depth with the loss of Deberry and Thomas/Cobb on wing. If we can avoid injury I think we will be a better team.

My gut tells me Caupain is the type of player who will take this season personally and make it a very special year.

Not worried about the top 6 + Cumberland, who I think will have a solid season. I'm more worried about the depth in terms of maintaining for the whole season. I fear a conference tournament or NCAA tournament game where a key player getting in foul trouble costing us the game since we have no one behind them. Tre Scott and Quadri Moore are huge keys for the season.

This is nothing more than my own personal hunch, but I honestly expect very little out of Cumberland this year. It's based solely on his size. I'm not sure he will be able to defend Division 1 guards right away. I'm not sure he will be able to create high percentage shots with his lack of speed. I hope I'm wrong, but he looks like the type of player that might take to the 2nd or 3rd year before he makes any impact. If he was more of a traditional size guard with good speed and quickness, I would probably view him differently. I hope I'm wrong.

....and that is a really scary thought.

Scott is much more important because he has more skills and will be able to guard out on the floor better which will keep him in the game longer.
