For goodness sake Mick just grab 2 grad transfers already and fill the spots. Its absolutely no risk but the reward and benefits could be huge for this team in the long run. Its a no brainer.

I think the trick is finding someone who can play on the wing and is worse than Kevin Johnson. We all know Johnson will start at the 2 over Cumberland. So in order for Cumberland (not Johnson) to get minutes, we have to get a bench only guy. Cumberland has to play. And he will. But it will be as a backup 2/3. There's basically no way Cronin would bench Johnson for him I don't think. So in order for both of those guys to stay in the rotation, we need someone who is willing to accept a limited role. That's not easy to do. So instead of reaching out to an Andrew White type, we have to find someone worse. Bc if we got someone good enough to command minutes, it'd be obvious that Johnson should be the odd man out. And Cronin wouldn't have that. Even if Johnson shoots 30%. Bc Johnson is a SR and a captain (and bc our coach doesn't use stats). Being a program guy trumps talent for Cronin. So it's challenging to actively pursue players who can be good enough to get spot minutes, but are bad enough to firmly stay behind a guy who has posted a 10.0 and 10.7 PER in his 2 years of playing time but has been named a captain regardless of the actual production.

*At least that's how this observer has seen things go down this spring.

wondering if XU signing Bernard is a reaction by Mack considering Myes Davis is being charged with Domestic violence. He may be done at X if convicted.

Chris Mack was at Cvg this morning. Took every ounce of me not to say anything to him.

Also, Larry Davis was at the airport too and he said he is out on the recruiting trail. I told him to bring em home!

I would think we could find a walk-on who would almost fit this description...lol!

If Mack can just decide to get a guy that quickly, that doesn't say a lot for our coaches. They've been coming up empty for months trying to find a guy like Bernard.

Mick most likely could have signed Kevin Noulowe or even Solly Stansbury. They just weren't a fit for the program. I'll trust their decisions as to why that is, but we could have done the same think Mack just did but passed.

Agreed. Those players are playing at Delaware State and Richmond. Obviously we didn't care to have them. The one I thought looked good was the big guy from LA Tech that went to ISU. Oh well. We will be fine.

Noulowe isn't a wing and Stansbury wasn't eligible this upcoming season.

Exactly Noulowe is a Juco he would be taking up 2 years that isn't what we need unless he blows you away with potential and like Jacobkdoyle said Stansbury wasnt eligible this year. We need grad transfers who provide depth and quality practice bodies that dont take any 2017 scholys. No risk possible high reward guys that dont effect our 2017 recruiting class at all...

It shouldn't be that hard we dropped the ball on Bernard. Mack out recruited and grabbed him easy or we are just dumb to see that he is literally no risk whatsoever in signing him for a grad transfer year and who knows what he could bring to the team if its nothing and he gets no playing time who cares we probably will pocket the scholys like we do every freaking year and waste them...

IMO the biggest risk we are faced with right now is a lack of depth at the wing. Last year we had Cobb, Thomas and Evans all out at times with nagging injuries and some were out at the same time.

Just imagine if that were to happen this year (we only have 3 wings)?? I would take a juco wing in a heartbeat so that we are not 1 or 2 injuries away from disaster...ESPECIALLY knowing that we are not likely to fill all the 2017 schollies anyway given our recent history of carrying 10 or 11 players on the roster.

Exactly, depth comes in many forms. Could have been a JUCO, a high schooler or a grad transfer. If we need depth for this year's team it didn't have to just be a grad transfer. There's only so many of them out there that could backup Evans and the 2016 class is tapped out...

You can't say the coaches dropped the ball. They're out there recruiting just like every other coach in America looking for the best talent available and the right fit. Because Norwood University ended up with some wing transfer from one of the worst teams in the country last year doesn't mean anything. We could have signed guys comparable to him and risked the defensive liability and hurting our already solid team chemistry. If a SF grad transfer happens to come up and is the right fit, we better call him up...

Hmm. Of course you can? They set out this spring to add help for this season. It hasn't happened. And we're short of where we want to be roster-wise.

Did they do their jobs and bring players in for visits and evaluations this spring? Yes. Did the get the specific player you or they wanted? No. The world of recruiting doesn't always workout the way you want it to. They added the 8th leading scorer in the country last year and a 3 point ace for next season. We've already covered the loss of our only 2 departing seniors. I think they had a pretty solid off season so far and you'll be pleased with next year's class

They set out to add help for this upcoming season. They weren't able to do it. I really don't care why. The fact is it didn't get done. We're a player short of where we want to be. I'm sure Mick Cronin himself would tell you that.

Not landing a player doesnt mean they dropped the ball. They didnt find anyone they were interested in. You cant just be like, well so and so is available, pick him up. And when they dont get all pissed off because someone else signed a player the staff had zero interest in. Thats not how recruiting works. You have to find a fit, you cant force a player to be a fit. Is that disappointing, sure, but does it mean the staff failed? not really

If they would have added the kid Xavier did. By the time the season comes, fans would be yelling and screaming saying so-so shouldnt even be on the floor. Then you would have people saying things like. Quad could have done that, Or JJ could have done that, should have just put him in...

I don't get the worry about what Xavier is doing in regards to recruiting. I get the rival part, but all 3 of our new guys for this year (Cumberland, Washington, and Brooks) were all recruited by Xavier, and all 3 still chose UC. Can't act like they're blowing us out of the water.

Maybe. I think we all know that we're not looking for a great player though. At some point, the staff failed to get the roster to 12 players. If it's too hard in the spring, then we need to do better in the fall to avoid being in this pinch. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but the reality is that we are a player short. Point to whatever you'd like, but the fact remains.
