This is interesting.

I don't want to start splitting hairs here or start comparing eras or anything :) but 2002 was the highest finish AP poll according to Sports Reference in the Bob Huggins era...as well his lowest loss total (4). Of course that includes tourney but I'm just saying...

We lost 4 games that year and Kmart's sr year. I am not wanting to compare the teams other than to say it's not that easy to finish a season with 4 losses. The best teams in the Huggins era lost 2 or 3 in regular season.
Huggins teams often won the conference tourney which means he may have never finished with more than 2-3 losses regular season...assuming 1 loss in the dance.

It's pretty darn hard to bust through a season with 4 losses even in our current conference. I think we played in a better conference back then but what we are doing the last couple of years is pretty good don't you think?

I realize what I just did and I am sorry...lol. I just want to say we are doing a very good job this year and last year. We aren't losing any bad games and we are undefeated at home. That is VERY tough to do!!

Ha I’m not going to get into it either but chances are we lost to a team we shouldn’t In the tourney.

That was the Huggins way. Dominate the regular season ,get a high seed then lose in the second round.

I think his last 8 years we had 1 sweet 16.
96-97: #3 seed upset in second round to #6 seed
97-98- #2 upset to #10 West Virginia
98-99 #3 upset by #6 temple
99-00: #2 upset by #7
00-01: #5 sweet 16 but lost to #1 Stanford
01-02: #1 lost to #8 ucla
02-03: #8 lost to 9 seed
03-04: #4 lost to #5 seed
04-05: #7 lost to #2

Shows you how much an early career final four buys you because we were elite at getting upset.

Just need to work on getting the respect from the committee like hugs used to and making noise in the tourney

Well at least you didn't get into the controversy...lol! I happen to love both coaches for what they have done for us. I cut my teeth on Huggins...but Cronin is doing a very good job. I have never seen the need to cut one of them down to build one of them up...or vice versa

97-02 was a brutal stretch of heartbreaking losses.

also shows how draws and luck work into it. those final 4 and elite 8 teams got some breaks along the way (9 seed in sweet 16 and 6 seed in elite 8 in 92, 6 seed in sweet 16 in 93). had a real shot in 96 getting to play a 5 seed in the elite 8. in 2001 we got to play a 13 seed in the 2nd round.

hopefully we can catch some breaks this year.

I can't believe we were #141 in 2007. That's a miracle. I've never looked that up before I don't think. I would've guessed we were in the 200s.

It's almost like draws, a little luck, and matchups heavily influence deep runs more than anyone usually wants to admit, except for the truly elite type of teams.

And the"upset" years we played an 8 seeded UCLA that had I believe 3 NBA guys (kapono, gadzuric, and Barnes) where as we were led by Logan/Stokes who never really made it at the next level despite incredible college seasons.

The other upsets, I don't have to rehash for every body, but there was the tipped blocked banked in buzzer beater 3, the tackle on Darnell Burton vs Iowa State that wasn't called that would've effectively iced the game. Oh and our NPOY breaking his leg in the conference tournament.

The year we lost to illinois that was a Deron Williams team.

Incidentally, that game was our second worst defensive performance in kenpom history. We gave up 1.46 points per possession. The only worse game was at GTown in 2007.

And the 2002 loss to UCLA is the most points we have ever given up in any kenpom era game (105).

We had three top 75 wins that year (X, NC St, West Virginia). That was my freshman year at UC. I went to all those games, along with maybe a dozen other students who accidentally wandered into the arena.

That team played their hearts out, even if they were severely shorthanded.

Ok here is the ballot I most likely will be submiting for Tomorrows Reddit Poll.

Its a complete Shit show after the top 15 or so and even then its not easy. Everyone is losing in the back end of the top 25 so Im trying to reward teams who aren't losing.

Let me know what you think:
  1. Villanova
  2. Purdue
  3. Virginia
  4. Duke
  5. Kansas
  6. Xavier
  7. Cincinnati
  8. Michigan State
  9. Arizona
  10. West Virginia
  11. North Carolina
  12. Ohio State
  13. Oklahoma
  14. Wichita State
  15. St Marys
  16. Gonzaga
  17. Nevada
  18. Texas Tech
  19. Tennessee
  20. Rhode Island
  21. Clemson
  22. Auburn
  23. Arizona State
  24. Florida
  25. Louisville

I really want to put providence in their somewhere but Im on a wait and see basis with them. Need one more week of good performance before I move them.

Isn't Clemson a little better than that?

We should pass up a min of 3 teams in each poll (Tex Tech, WSU, and Oklahoma). I don't see us passing up MSU. The biggest question is how the voters treat WV.

Mich state does not have a good resume. They have less top 100 wins than we do

That's fine...I just don't think we pass them up with our performance against UCF and ECU. Those aren't the type of performances that inspire voters to move us past other teams that also didn't lose.
