I've seen in all the statistics that show overall UC is one of the best defensive teams in the nation. I thought I'd see what those numbers really mean against teams that are NCAA tournament caliber (I included St. Johns because they positioned themselves for a bid with the win today), because that is who we will be measured against.

This so called "great defense" against NCAA caliber teams allows:

64.6 points per game
46.7% (147-315) Field Goal Percentage
43.3% (39-90) 3-Point Percentage
13 Three Point Attempts
45 Field Goal Attempts

Those are some pretty bad numbers for field goal percentage, I think this proves that they really are just an above average defensive team and have serious lapses against good teams. The points per game average isn't bad but you also have to consider the limited possessions each team has, as UC plays a slower tempo.

Here are the scary bad numbers, the offense averages:

56.4 points per game
35.7% (145-406) Field Goal Percentage
30.1% (46-153) 3-Point Percentage
22 Three Point Attempts (9 more than opponents)
58 Field Goal Attempts (13 more than opponents)

What these numbers show is that against quality opponents in Big East play, Cincinnati is simply not good enough to compete with these teams. Their poor defense and horrific offense show that this is simply an NIT Team. They beat up on really bad teams...had an inflated record, and inflated statistics...and quite frankly are a fraud.

They aren't just folding at the end of this season, they simply weren't any good to begin with.

UC has to rely on too many threes (with not so great shooters) and essentially concede interior shots for most of the game. It's a recipe for losses.

Yep. 38% of their shots have been threes and 35% of their points have come from threes in those games.

UC 66 XU 46, that alone makes 2010-2011 a great season.

Oh my God, my worst fears are coming true. WE'RE TURNING INTO X!!!

I will never define my season's success by that. It would make me no better than all the douchers that celebrated a win vs UC like it was the NC. (Only rivaled by their excitement when Lillith Fair rolled into town) I'll save that mentality for the queerbaits playing in the garbage A10.

Frankly, I wish we'd drop that game. I know some of their fans made mention of it. Why not give them their wish? Eff Xavier. My favorite analogy: I could pick a fight with a girl right now. I just won't be running around like a real bad ass afterward.

Xavier has dominated the series is the last 10 years. They have also had decent tournament success. I hate X, but they get it done and improve as the year goes on.

i looked up mid way through the second half and saw st johns was shooting 68 %
absolutely ridiculous.

Seems like you care.

Don't care.
I am not quite sure how this works. If you don't care about X why would you have a 1/4 page rant about them? Seems kinda strange to me..... This isn't about X though....it is about a team that doesn't seem to get the job done when the game is on the line. I am kinda sick of seeing Cronin be happy with settling for 3's all game and would like to see him be able to draw up an offense. the St. John's game was evidence of that.....when he called a timeout in the last seconds of the game the "play" that was run was sloppy and disorganized at best. That is my opinion and you are more than welcome to disagree with it.

UC shot 34.7% from inside the arc and 35.8% from outside it. Cronin doesn't like the way the team is playing and bemoans the lack of mental toughness and lack of attention to detail. This is something the players themselves acknowledge. The last play was a perfect example of that. It was not run the way it was called. This team panics. I've said it for 3 weeks. Their issue is a lack of mental toughness. It causes them to force things, make mistakes, and take bad shots as well as effecting their defense.

Cronin: “No. I have a problem with our focus and our lack of attention to detail. It’s inexcusable for Cashmere to stand there and watch Dwight Hardy shoot a wide open three. This would be the longest press conference ever if I talked about our mistakes. Our league is too good. Bob Knight said it a long time ago that basketball is a game of mistakes and that the team with the least amount will win. We made way too many inexcusable mistakes today that we practiced and prepared. Our problem is when we get down we lose our mind."

Bishop: “I was trying to get the win. I just happened to hit the shots. When we are down, we talk about it a lot that we try to stay together and play hard. I saw some people get down, and I picked up my energy to get us back in the game.”

Kilpatrick: “Sometimes we do force our shots, but we need to start driving to the basket a little bit more.”

I don't disagree with the lack of mental toughness but I do feel it has been that way since Cronin started coaching them. The players are usually an extension of the coach. They ultimately have to execute it but when it happens time and again that tells me that they aren't being coached. I have been to several games over the past couple years where I have seen them fold under pressure but also in those games I do not see Mick getting after them the way he should be when they start to fold. He talks about how unhappy he is in their performance but he doesn't seem to be doing anything to fix it either. That is all my point was.....he seems to be angry about it in the press conferences but not during the game when he needs to make adjustments.

and yet amazingly, they still only give up 89.6 pts per 100 possessions when adjusted for caliber of opponents, which still puts them at 13th in the nation.

you can try to skew the #s however you want, but when the statistic already accounts for quality of opponent adjustments your grasping at straws

Giving up 46.7% shooting and shooting just 35.7% yourself must be great numbers to you.
