Deveroes Summer League

Strickland is also complaining how he needs to rest up because he is sore. Before it was Lawrence. Pretty sad when a bunch of 18-19 year old's can't hang and show commitment. Can't wait til our strength coach and Cronin rip them a new a$$hole this year in practices.

Coach Cronin, I think Im too sore to play today, this Louisville game isn't that important, is it?

Coach Cronin, Im too tired to go to class today, can I just skip?

Can't I just skip the weight room today, it isn't that important.....

I have noticed that many people who blow off smaller things tend to blow off the big things. Think about in college, there is always that one kid who skips everyday of class and then shows up to the exam and knows nothing. It's easy to say, "Oh, I will just skip class this once." Then it becomes a habit and they wonder how they failed the class. You can't make excuses, it will get you nowhere......,

They work out before they play. I'd 100% rather see them prepping for the season, and after the way they work out I don't blame them if they don't want to play. The owe us nothing.

I was there today. I wish I had seen them, but I am not sweating the fact that they didn't show up. Even if they just didn't want to play today, oh well.

We can agree to disagree then, when no one at all on the team decides to play it is them blowing it off. If someone is sore or hurt and doesn't want to risk injury then I am fine with them sitting a game. We have what, 11 players on the team playing in the league and not one shows up to play? That is not coincidence. It is them blowing it off and this fan is not happy about it. I very seriously might not ever waste my time to go down there again. If the players make a commitment to play they need to honor that commitment. Again this isn't one or two players choosing to sit for one reason or another. It's 10 or 11 players. That is not a coincidence.

When they start blowing off things the coaches actually care about, then I will be concerned.

I'd rather them prep too, but seriously? How sore are you if you can't play a game? It wouldn't even be a big deal, if they announced in advance they weren't coming; but to just not show up? Smh... and the excuse being "couldn't find a ride? Really? lol

I really don't care, like I said I didn't go but just weak...

That is completely fine, I don't care if they don't play, but if you say you are going to play, then the least you can do is show up. If they would rather focus 100% on prepping for next season, Im 100% behind them.

It's not an assumption, Jack, it's called the 21st century, more people have cars than people who don't have cars. Lawrence tweeted about how he was driving up here. KJ went to Summit, unless he was on their diversity scholarship plan to bring in better athletes (aka cheating), Im sure his family could afford a car. If he can't afford a car, he shouldn't be going to a $20,000/year school.....

How do you know he was driving? His parents could have been dropping him off like thousands of other freshmen? Also they pay nothing to go to school. You still are making assumptions about their situations and their families. I just feel many of you here are really overreacting. It is not a UC sanctioned event, they frankly dont owe anything to the fans in the off season. Im worried about them improving their game, doing well in school and most importantly getting comfortable in their surroundings at UC and Cincinnati. They missed a summer league game and upset some people. Those who went and paid their 3 bucks to charity that didnt see them play have a reason to be upset. I just am uncomfortable watching a portion of the fan base just rip them to shreds for missing 1 summer league game. If they just blew it off (Which we dont if they did) then that was a poor decision in judgement. They are kids. It probably wont be the last time they do something immature. But some on here saying they have no character and one saying to go "eff" themselves lacks, in my opinion, serious perspective. Thats the last thing ill say about the incident. Happy to have them, hope this doesnt happen again, and look forward to their contributions to next years team.

This doesn't apply Jack. They are not in Cincy to play in the summer league. They are here to go to class and get ready for the season. Have you ever tried to play ball after lifting hard? It's nearly impossible. In order of importance for the summer, Deveroes is a distant third behind class and working out with the strength coaches.

Seriously? They are not obligated to play for you in the summer. People need to get a grip.

Blowing off anything is wrong. I don't care if it is a church festival, job, volunteering at a homeless shelter, etc. If you say you are going to do something, you do it, unless you are sick or have planned something out well in advance. Blowing things off shows immaturity, lack of respect, and lack of accountability. One of my favorite HS coaches always said, "The ability that counts is accountability."

I would put it even further down the list behind summer workouts with coaches, open gym with the veteran players, and maybe even behind taking a daily dump.

Furthermore, this league is something that draws attention to the Bearcat program. There were at least two news crews down there and multiple fans. Their decision has an impact on how the media in town sees them and the fans. I'm not going to stop being a fan of the team because of this, but if I'm a casual fan and I see the X players down there and see the Bearcat players blow it off, that might affect the way I feel about each team. If I'm in the media and I'm going to get footage and report on the players, then maybe not showing up affects how I choose to give you coverage in the future. These guys represent the university on and off the court. When they commit to play basketball it is a reflecting on them and the university whether it's a real game or a summer league game.

Again, that is fine, just don't play. I wouldn't hold it against them if they said that they would rather focus on grades and workouts, but don't say you will do something and then not show up. That is just plain rude. Even if they would've said something yesterday that they were skipping, I would be okay with it, but don't mislead people into thinking that you will show up and then abandon it......,

100% agree. If you can't show up, then say so, don't make weak excuses and mislead people.

Over-simplification. Nobody is saying Deveroes is important.
It's the lack of commitment/mettle. Not to mention the excuses.
It's not a huge deal but it does leave a pretty lousy impression on those who took and interest and bothered to show up today to support them. No, that has no significance to their time here and what they've been given scholarships to do but it does make them look soft and the program look kind of crummy.

If we're just not going to participate, let's just not participate. Don't just commit to something and then at the last second say "fuck it". Poor character. First impressions are everything.

I agree, they left their fans hanging today and that's not cool. Don't do the league if it's too much. I would have no problem with that.

They are obligated to not mislead people. They don't have to play for me, but if they sign up for something and don't show up without telling people in advance, that is wrong. If you have a Dentist appointment at 9 in the morning and you can't make it, wouldn't you say it would be common courtesy to give them a call and say you can't make it? Same situation here.....

Some of you are still assuming they just blew it off. Until I hear otherwise, I am going with the fact they couldn't get a ride. That is what Anthony McBride said when he called looking for them today. Most years there are a couple of veterans on the SLATS team. This year it is only the freshman. I suspect that could have led to missing today.

Dude they're 18 and had no ideal what a college level conditioning program is like. I'm sure they had the best of intentions. Stop taking it so personal geesh.

The veterans missed today as well. It is not coincidence or the excuse of a ride that none of our scholarship players showed up today. In my opinion, they blew it off. And to be clear to everyone, I don't think the summer league is a big deal at all. I would rather a player stay home if they could be in a better league or get better competition to practice with (like Kilpatrick and Dixon have done in past). I would rather them workout extra than play in a meaningless game. I would rather them not risk injury if they are sore. I would rather them not play at all if the competition is too weak. What I would not rather them do is commit to play and then as a whole blow it off. They need to understand that people are wanting to watch them play and giving up their time and money (and I could give a shit less about $3) to come see them play because they committed to play.
