Deveroes Summer League

It's freakin' Deveroes. Get a grip.

I used to go to the games, but they're somewhat of a joke. Nobody plays defense and even the wanna-be's look all-pro.

You'll learn nothing from watching these guys play in Deveroes.

Years ago, UC had a recruit named Deandre Coleman who looked like a beast all through the Deveroes League. You see how that turned out.

I'd avoid going if I were you. It will mislead you on the players abilities. Deveroes is a far cry from real college basketball.

I know he isnt on the team officially and will be trying to walk on..but is Max Tymann playing in Deveroes?

I understand what you are saying about the league. But to tell people not to show up that want to support our team is a bunch of crap. I like that people are irritated that they did not see the team yesterday. Think a few years back, nobody wanted to see Adam H, Ron Allen or Marcus Sikes play. At least there is enthusiasm to see new recruits.

I've been listening to the summer hype about incoming recruits for 20-30 years. It gets old.

I don't even find Deveroes games entertaining.

It's not about supporting them. It's just wanting to see REAL basketball played. Too many guys look like the next coming of Lebron or MJ at Deveroes.

I already told the Deandre Coleman story. Then there was the guy who transferred in, Mike somebody, who could barely jump to begin with but everyone said looked like the best player at Deveroes. I think he blew out his Achilles after 1 season here. But he never could jump anyway.

So many overhyped performances due to the lack of defense played. I think Deveroes gives a false sense of ability about most of the players.

I've had a day to think on it and honestly I don't feel any different about it. I realize I'm being lumped in here as a whiner and a crybaby and if that's your opinion of me then so be it. My beef was never solely on the five freshman. None of the veterans came to play either. I sat down there from 2 to 5:15 and didn't get to see one UC player. I realize these guys aren't obligated to play, but at the same time I'm not obligated to go watch them, nor am I obligated to support the program. I find it completely uncoincidental that 11 or 12 UC players that are playing in the league didn't come to play on the same day. Only the five freshman are using the excuse of not having a ride. Somehow I'm betting if Kilpatrick were in town this would not have happened. I was upset at not getting to see Shaq and Titus and Davis among others. I've gone down to this thing for 5 or 6 years now and there have been plenty of games where a player I wanted to see didn't show up for one reason or another and it never bothered me. Yesterday bothered me. Subflea is the only poster on here that went down that doesn't seem bothered by it and kudos to him for it. I don't feel the same way. For what its worth I never called anyone names or belittled their characters or called them or assumed they're arrogant athletes. Our team seems to be full of good character guys and I like that. If the five freshman couldn't get a ride, which I don't fully believe, then I blame the 6 or 7 veterans. They all decided not to play and they aren't setting a good example for the newcomers. Again I'm betting if Kilpatrick were in town this wouldn't have happened. He's been down the last two years sitting on the sidelines and on the bench with the newcomers even though he hasn't played in the league. The players need to realize that even though this league is completely meaningless, they represent the university and by agreeing and signing up to play by doing so they are having fans count on them and wanting to support them. Again I'm curious as to the 6 or 7 veterans that didn't show up to play either. The freshman are taking the blame, which is probably unfair.

Mike Williams is who you are referring to. He was a 5* recruit who transferred from Texas (played behind Durant) and a McDAA as well. So if people said he looked like the real deal probably because he was. He blew his Achilles out and became a jump shooter.

The people who go there are supporting our players and not giving excuses. Who cares if Deandre or Jamaul tore up the DSL and underachieved in CBB, it is all just an extension of AAU ball and if people want to see our future frosh and report on it, I am all for it. It is fun for players and for fans as JJ5 said.

david, you have no idea what their situation was. And frankly it doesn't matter. Most of the new guys just got in town. You think they are in a hurry to go play in a crappy summer league game after working out all morning (and probably every hour since being on campus)? Oh, but you think they should make every effort to get down there because you (and typically about 20 other fans) had to donate $3 to watch them play? Get real.

I've been to DSL just about every year and it's always a crap shoot who is going to show up. If you expect better that's your fault for not understanding what the league is about. Hell, Cronin would rather them not attend at all.

And Chatter, that's your fault for changing your expectations based on watching them in DSL. Some people, myself included, just like watching them play and want to get an early look at the newcomers. You ever think that some aren't placing expectations on the players based on what they see there?

He will be the teams starting PG by conference play

Eh, I like Caupain more at point. Johnson has skills, but as I have seen with my two eyes and a few scouting reports on him, he doesn't really fit the point guard position yet. He is better when he doesn't have to take the ball up the court and he is prone to sloppy play at times. He thrives as a SG, but I think if he were redshirted and given time to work on being a PG, he could be successful there too. Depends on what Cronin wants, immediate impact with scoring or somebody who, over time, could become a good point guard. His skill set is very good, but we need him to pick a position and stick with it. Caupain fits the mold a little better in my eyes, he does a little bit of everything and, as mentioned by a few others who have gone to games, is a very vocal floor general.

Johnson will most likely redshirt this year and start at sg next year and be very good with the extra year of practice and strength training he can be next sk by senior year.

I don't change my expectations. I just get sick of listening to fools like you hyping these players after seeing them play in a no defense summer league.

I already said I wait until Fall to see who is the real deal.

Enjoy watching Fool's Gold. It's fits you since you're a fool anyway. :D

who did I ever hype up? I'll wait for an answer from you on this.

Nice 3 year old humor there.

He either plays SG and doesn't redshirt, or he redshirts and works on becoming a PG. Having a freshman PG is hard enough, let alone a freshman PG who didnt play there in HS.
Wouldn't count on him working on becoming a PG. he will be used as a combo guard. Much like Dion.Caupain will play PG this year. They have Guyn for another year after this one and I suspect may bring in another one after this year.

I would expect him at SG 90% of the time and 10% at PG, if he plays this year. If he is redshirted, it might be more like 70-30 or 60-40 next year. I'm confident he could do it for 2-3 minutes this year if needed, but he isn't a long term solution there without redshirting and working on the intangibles required to be a PG. Caupain is definitely in the plans at PG, Im sure he and Guyn will both receive some time......
