I remember a long time ago when we had Keith Legree. He was a good player who defender great and always caused problems for the other team. Problem was he would get to the Free Throw line and not convert. It was just such a waste of points. So when I heard we were getting this kid from Cleveland who was scoring like 28 pts a game for a D1 school and was hitting 95% of his free throws I was very excited. Turned out to be one of our best players of all time.

If I am recruiting players for my team I would have FT shooting high up on my list. Along with alot of other things but it just seems like this is not important to coaches. I don't think we have had a game yet where if we hit 80% of our free throws we don't win. At least focus on this during workouts or practice. I'm just amazed a player like JP can't hit his free throws.

Certain sports have certain stats that people overlook. For baseball it is OBP. People used to say Dunn sucked because he struck out so much. Who cares? His OBP was over .400. Personally I would rather him walk, hit a homer or strikeout and not take the chance of him hitting into a double play.

In basketball I love that Mick eyes the deflections stat. I think it is a very interesting stat and is why we are so good on defense. However, I think FT shooting is another super important stat that we need to fix and fast! Why do players suck at this so bad, along with lay ups?

Bearcatrunner, I'm stunned with how bad JP has hit FT's this year. He was 10 percentage points higher last year. He actually was a guy who I wanted on the line in pressure situations. Don't know what the issue is. If him and JJ had hit FT's we would have beaten GT.

139. Free Throw Shooting

I dont think any coach has ever had one of there recruiters say to him. Hey coach K this kid is an incredible free throw shooter, but he has a terrible release and he wont be able to get shots off in a real game, he isn't strong, he's a terrible rebounder, he's a pussy and doesn't like to be physical, he is 5'7 and he is white.

Free throw shooting is nice to have, but its not something that is going to determine a coach to recruit a kid or not.

Speaking of a kid being white, it's hard to believe that UC hasn't had a white kid that wasn't a walk on since Ryan Fletcher. As a white male I'd have to say I'm somewhat offended. Not by the University but by the athletic ability of younger white males.

Watch it, you'll get branded a racist lol. And you are not the only one who has noticed that. I think the fact the UC is an inner city school has a lot to do with it though.

But it's not like they are recruiting inner city Cincinnati so why is that a factor?

I hadn't even noticed that fact though.

this is actually wrong. adam h was on scholly.

Cronin prefers black recruits and that is no big deal. He isn't the only one who does it. Thompson use to do the same thing back in the day at Georgetown. It is what it is.

Last time I checked Kevin Pangos and Mitch McGary were not black, and that's just to name a few of the white guys that Mick has recruited. Prefers black recruits? That's just idiotic.

I will argue with you all day on an appropriate thread or pm as to why Adam Dunn is one of the worst baseball players of all time and why his strikeouts aren't over-rated and why his homers and OBP are. And I'm a fan of drawing walks and a high OBP.

As far as free-throws go, I have to tend to think coaches don't look much into that while recruiting a kid. I think Cash was a 92% free throw shooter in high school if I remember correctly and he has had his struggles his first few years. I think the thought is you can teach a guy proper mechanics if they don't have them in high school. I will say that I'm not sure Mick is doing everything he can to help out the free-throw shooting, but none of us are in his practices so it would all be speculation. Free throws are mostly mental. Players who want to excel at it will motivate themselves to do so and players who are mentally tough won't tighten up at the line. You can have a guy shoot as many free throws as you want, but if he isn't mentally trying to improve it won't matter. And while I don't think free-throws are over-rated by any stretch of the imagination people fail to realize that 50% from the free-throw line, while horrible, is equivalent to 50% from the field, which is great. My point is regardless of how bad your team as a whole is at shooting free throws you still should take any and every opportunity to get to the line.

Look at Cronin's teams since he has been the coach. How many white players has he had on scholarship? Now who is the idiot?

Come on man, its pure numbers. Does Miami hockey prefer white players? No. There are significantly less talented black hockey players. I don't think he intentionally avoids white kids.
