Jermaine Lawrence asks for release

It's absolutely hilarious how many people on this board used the signing of Jermaine Lawrence as a landmark moment for the program and how many of those same people just dismiss the fact that he's leaving as if it's no big deal. When Lawrence was out last year many people talked about how we needed to get him back and how having him out of the lineup was hurting us.

JL was going to be a good player, and probably still will be a good player somewhere. Being a highly rated recruit doesn't guarantee a future in the NBA or a one and done status.

If landing JL was a big success for this program then losing him is a big loss for this program. Having your highest rated recruit leave after one year with the team isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for the next highly rated guy we try to recruit.

I wish JL the best of luck and hope he one day figures it out and lands in the NBA. He's got all the raw ability, just needs to find the right place to put it all together.

.....not to mention the transfer of JD III in the same season. He also was considered a significant signing for the program. I don't mind them leaving for the NBA, but transferring in general isn't good. I liked both players and hope they do well.

JDIII was not a significant signing. His recruiting was trending down when we got involved. We upgraded when he left.

Time will tell. I predict he will end up being a very good player. I think he could have helped us a bunch, but Mick couldn't get past his defense, which I thought was better than average. He had good anticipation in the helter skelter press situations and could get steals. In one-on-one situations, he struggled some, but so did SK early in his career. As a senior, SK was much better. I think JD would have been as well.

will certainly have to agree to disagree. In my eyes he was slow, had suspect handles and couldn't guard his shadow. From his limited playing time he could knock down a jumper but if you can't guard you can't play. We already have a JDIII he is called Sanders.

JDIII rim to rim was our fastest player

Go online and look up some of the youtube videos and articles about him since he transferred. One talks about him being the fastest player on the team, his outstanding attitude, etc. His coach is just raving about how good of a plyer he is. I know it is Ball St., but he's getting a lot of positive pub.

Shockingly though, there was no scholarship available there and he's playing this coming year as a walk-on. I hadn't heard that.

Yes, there seems to be a wide difference in opinion about him. My son is a UC student right now and said he was a favorite of the students. I know a lot of season ticket holders who thought he was very good. Then there's people like you who didn't see much in him. That's not to say you're wrong because there are many like you in that opinion. He's just a player that you either loved or hated. There seemed to be no in-between. Again, I predict he'll become very very good in the MAC.

I hope TC or Cobb don't struggle on defense and Mick plays guyn on defense. Only good thing about guyn defense is that he has a ridiculous wingspan.

I'm just a big believer if you don't guard you can't play. Defense is effort. If his offensive game was so good then his defense had to be abysmal to not see the floor. Our last few seasons had been punctuated by how hard we play defense. Our defense is what helped us win games and make the Dance. He just didn't seem like a good fit. Have nothing personal against him and hope he does well. This just wasn't a good spot for him. Again just my opinion.

I think JDIII could have helped us this year, but it's obvious something wasn't right between him and the coaching staff (I'm talking even before the house fire). I won't begin to speculate on what the problem was, but I would have really liked to see JDIII develop here.

would like to see all the kids succeed. Sometimes it just doesn't happen. Styles, systems and other events get in the way at times.

Hey, no problem. Others think just like you do. But, there's two parts to this game. Defense has gotten us to two straight dances and got us bounced in the first round both times...by Creighton and Harvard. I think most believe that we need to put a little more emphasis on offense to be able to start making some noise in March. We had a great season, yet attendance dropped from 9,300/game to about 8,500/game. I love great defense, but watching us win games 42-41 and 53-49 is pretty excruciating as a fan.

We didn't have many offensive players to work with, but I think JDIII was one of them. He had great court vision, was a very good passer, and could hit the outside shot, something not many on this team could do. Yeah, I get it...he struggled at times defensively, but this team needed some offense.

Anyway, this is old news. Our guard situation looks much improved, so it's water over the dam at this point. Good luck to JDIII and hopefully the new crop of guards will lead us to some great years to come.

I see your point. I guess for me I could careless what the score is as long as we win. If it takes more then running a clean, winning program to get people to show up our program isn't worth supporting. I also agree we needed offense but if your giving up what your scoring it is a wash. Hopefully the new guards will be able to do both. Our last few teams were not built to out score teams even with JDIII on the floor. We defended hard, hit the glass and worn down the opposition. In my opinion playing JDIII wasn't going to turn us into a offensive force and would have weaken us defensively.

JDIII was part of Mick's worst recruiting class. I realize Mick did the best he could considering the challenges he had to overcome in rebuilding the program. JDIII definitely needed to transfer because he wasn't going to see the floor at UC. He was very limited athletically in that he didn't have the athleticism to guard others and his ball handling and shooting were going to keep him last in line at the guard rotation.

Its official. JL was granted his release. Assuming he sits out this upcoming season that will be 3 consecutive seasons he hasn't played a full season.

When Cronin was asked how the departure will affect UC, Cronin said " we have plenty of guys, we will be fine". Adios Lawrence. Wish you and for father the best.

I honestly think Lawrence leaving may work out best for both parties. We have so many pieces for next season, and I feel as if we need someone with experience to come in and give us some leadership. I would love to have Justin Martin, but I don't know how realistic it is to think we will land him. I would be very happy with Stewart also, as he looks like someone who could develop into a really good scorer for us. I know we haven't seen Morman yet, but he looks like a blue collar, Dion Dixon type of player. I think KJ will be good, but I don't know if he can be a consistent scorer for us yet. Stewart would add another piece to the puzzle, and we know that UC doesn't get 4 star players like they grow on trees, so I would definitely welcome him with open arms.

None of those recruits you mentioned bring in what you say UC needs.

I'd assume he is looking at SJU as well?

The MAAC would be a perfect fit for him. I wish for his sake that he could play right away.
