New Arena

I think all speculation on moving downtown is being led by the Nederlander group trying to coax the media into pushing their agenda of getting us down there with our money. If that were going to happen it would've happened. The university has already sold packages for season tickets at 5/3rd for next year and apparently are going through with renovations to the locker rooms. Any arena on campus would probably be a gutting of 5/3rd and a reconfiguration. New locker rooms might be going into a place that wouldn't hinder any plans. And to be honest even if they do move downtown, women's bball and volleyball would still be held at 5/3rd.
That's a good point, but where the locker rooms are located, I don't see how they could avoid them. Let's hope this is a sign that we are going to stay on campus.

I understand that it wold be difficult to ask for more money so soon after the Nipper renovation, but i feel as if enough donors should understand how crucial it is to get both facilities up to date. Is it really so impossible to believe that we could raise the money to renovate 5/3 from scratch?

Unfortunately, yes. I believe the only reason they are considering US Bank Arena is because they likely won't have to pay the full cost of renovation so it would be the quickest way to get into a state of the art arena. If UC truly has desires to move up in conference affiliation, time is of the essence.

Personally, I'm neutral on the move downtown. I like the whole environment down there. That being said, I know a lot of people who have told me that if we move down there, they will cancel their tickets. I don't think most people want to go back down there. Too many bad memories of the years when we were there. And, it was a disaster in terms of getting students to attend. On a positive note, that place became a place where we almost never got beat after the 80s. We have played very well down there. If we had a Yum Center facility, it would be a no-brainer. But just modernizing what's already there wouldn't make much of a difference to most fans in my opinion. We're having enough problems getting them to come on campus to watch a game. It will be worse down there. But, I personally like attending games down there.

Several people I know said they would probably get season tickets if the games were moved downtown. Hard to tell the season tickets effects based on anecdotal evidence.

I'm also neutral on the location. I'm for anything that creates better seating and viewing. I take in 7 or 8 games a year and will only go if I can sit in lower level. I do make exceptions for big games such as senior night this year. Will not go to the game if I have to sit in nose bleeds on a bench. Would rather watch at home or in a bar. I think attendence will improve if the facility is upgraded and the program is able to schedule better teams. Also the Cats will need to continue to make seasons like 2013 a regular occurence.

Agree with everything you said Waite. The university tends to give me worse seats when we have games down there, so I don't like that. Certainly for the non-season ticket holders, it would probably be a much better experience down there. There's just something about the frenzied noise of the Shoe when the team is making a run that just isn't the same down at that arena though. I would certainly miss that.

Having our football stadium and basketball arena in the middle of campus is a luxury we would be stupid to let go. Games on campus are great for the students, aka future fans and donors, and for alumni that like to revisit campus. It's also a great way to show off our campus to casual fans and potential students. And don't give me the "Banks Experience" BS, Clifton had everything the Banks offers with more character. If there really is something downtown you love so much then go there before the game, it's a 5-10 min drive from campus anyways

If it's such a luxury, how come not many other schools do it? I agree that it's great for students, but I hear alumni and older fans complain a lot about having to park far from the arena. My biggest complaint is Exit 3 from 71. Taft/McMillan is a trainwreck when busy; mostly when leaving the game. That one-lane road to get to the highway is awwwful.

If traffic is your biggest gripe, then rest assured that this situation will be greatly improved in 2 or so years. Construction starts this summer on the I-71/MLK interchange.

The traffic would also be awful depending on where you park downtown. It gets backed up before and after Reds games and concerts.

Complaining about traffic is stupid if you wanna be big time. Think about it most MAJOR colleges are in small towns with ZERO highways for MILES. Were going downtown anyway if and when we do get new campus arena. I GUARANTEE you we will know where our future is headed in next couple weeks. City needs UC help in funding downtown arena to get the RNC here.

Couldnt we raise tuition $12 dollars a semester to fund our arena? I don't see too many students complaining bout this because they would also get to use state of art facility. You have 5x more non student athletes that use arena than you do student athletes.

Traffic has never stopped me from going (nor will it ever), but I think it'd definitely be easier going downtown. Of course it's intense for Reds/Bengals games, as those often have between 30-65k there. We'd have on average like 11k. Not really comparable.

You ever here about fans whose college teams have 75+ football stadiums complain about traffic? ONLY LOSERS ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING SMALL THAT HAS ZERO EFFECT ON GAME TO COMPLAIN ABOUT!!!

Your post barely makes any sense. I'm just comparing the two options. Simmer down. I'm sure we are not the first school to ever complain about traffic.

Cincinnati already subsidizing nearly 1/3 of the athletic budget which is one of the tops in the nation among major schools. If you charged each student $24 additional dollars per year for all 42,000+ students that would only raise about $1 million dollars.

UC has one of the lowest athletic department budgets of any major school AND that includes major subsidies already. They have to find a way to bring in more revenue to open up the budget more, if that means moving into a downtown stadium that is most funded by outside sources then so be it.

I have never been to a game at US Bank. Was living elsewhere when it was built and have never had the occasion to go. I spend a lot of time down on the banks. I'm a big Reds fan. Enjoy the night life down there. I'm also a older person who doesn't mind walking a ways to park. I'm probably a rare bred in todays world. Long story short I just want a nice facility. Downtown or on campus makes me no difference. I'll go to more games in either place if my seat is one I can see all the action from and am semi comfortable in.

Or change the requirement of health insurance and bring the $900 a semester cost for that for each student using it to the arena, it'd get funded awful quick and I would sure get better value for that money I'm wasting on it now!

Why make a short term decision to move to US Bank while in the process compromising the future and future revenue when we could wait a little longer and get an on campus arena?
