By the way, that statement is NOT a slam on UC, simply a statement that the conference doesn't matter when you get to the finals. It's the team. You can have 5 All-Americans or none. But you have to perform to win. Isn't that what this thread is all about?

Yes it is but you guys want to continually change yor standard. UC won 22 games, 26 games and 26 games the past 3 years, but winning isn't enough now. It has to be done in a certain way. I would be far more respectful of you and those of like mind, if you would just be honest and say, "I don't like the coach and nothing this program does under him will matter or change my opinion." Because that is the truth.

Those cupcake games at the Shoe also drew 10k nightly back then. Must different than it is now.

I know Whit Babcock in January credited Mick Cronin with the 26.7% increase in attendance this year. Attendance had been dropping under Huggins as his failed March's added up. It dropped off the map after the fiasco with Huggs and Zimpher. It seems to be going in the right direction again.

I agree with your comment about the right direction and attendance. But you are dead wrong about attendance during Huggins last few years. In 2004-05, attendance averaged well over 11,000 a game. And that was a mediocre team and the only time FTA was below 12k per game. In 1999-00, every home game was sold out (including the cub cakes). This season, we averaged 8,500 per game.

I never said attendance wasn't higher then, I said it was declining. I will double check the numbers but believe I am right in that.

UC was top 25 in attendance in 2003 and 2004 so I stand corrected, even though attendance did drop in 2005. But the fact remains that the Huggs/Z thing took the air out of the UC program, not Mick Conin as some of you like to paint it.

It dropped the year they fired Huggins. So what is the reason we cannot crack 9k a game then? Kennedy did it. I do not think the attendance problem rest solely on Cronin, however. But his personality does not put butts in the seats either. That you have to admit, Jeff.

That's obvious, the product wasn't as good. People rallied a bit around that last team. It was fun to watch and then Boom! 2 years recruiting lost, and the program is in shambles. The fan base became bitter, and some still are, and has never moved on. It's a shame really.

Time will heal that, eventually. But bashing the Huggin's years does not help lessen some people's bad taste in their mouths.

Here's the thing, nobody, or at least I don't bash the Huggs years. I simply put the on court accomplishments in perspective. I was ready after years of first weekend failures to see Huggs go before that. With the talent and seedings he had there was no reason for 1 sweet 16 after 1996. Yes games were fun and uni's were cool, but it was always super disappointing the last 8-9 years.

I also would have liked to see us go further in the NCAA's, but I enjoyed those seasons far more than the ones we are having now. And to me, it is all about the season. The tourney is just dessert.

I see Ralph and his IDs bashing Huggins more than he does X. But he can have his opinion. I would like to see Cronin have some success, but that does not mean I am a fan of his. I am a fan of the team.

Yes the regular season is under appreciated, but it is played for March. I'd rather go 20-10 in regular season and make consistent tournament runs than 26-4, be ranked all year and lose in the second round. It's just perspective.

Season games I can attend. Those are where I can sit and enjoy the atmosphere. How often does one get to visit NY? To each their own. I can relate to what you are saying though. My wife enjoys the tournament more than anything in sports, even the Reds.

I was young then but remember that it became a running joke about the Cats not making it past the first weekend. I thought it was frustrating too as have moments of the Cronin era have been.

Yes, they have. Like this season. I am so disappointed in the way it went and the lack of adjustments that were made to compensate. I'll continue to suppot the program as I have for 30 years and hope Head Coach on down learns something from it.

Like the entire Lance year and most of this season? ;)

Sure enough, no one is perfect. Mick's got a great class coming in though. Next year may be frustrating because of youth, but after next year I would think there wouldn't be too many excuses left. I think what last year's team lacked that the last several successful Cronin's squads had was a player that he could kick off the team in order to get the attention of the entire squad. ;)
