I am not slapping a redshirt on anyone. Geesh. I am not saying it's likely either. If there would be a redshirt I just think he would be my most likely that's it. There are 3 bigs that won't or can't. The other one would be Clark and I think he's got the type of playing attitude that Mick likes...high motor. That is all I am basing it on.
I hope we redshirt no one...nor am I saying we will. However, if we do, every other player will be juco, already redshirted, or have playing experience already...except Clark and Moore.
I don't know why we would carry 5 bigs for Sanders to play the 4. I just don't see it unless none of them get the system. Sanders will split the 3with Thomas...maybe steel a couple minutes from the 2 or 4 but that's it.
Redshirting Moore is not a waste when he's getting better and stronger what is a waste is playing him 5 minutes a game and lowering his confidence on the bench.

Why would redshirtting Moore make him better? Wouldnt playing in D-1 games for a year, instead of not, make him better? What hurts his confidence more? Playing 5 min a game as a true frosh for a good team, or being told he needs to sit out completely bc he isnt good enough yet?
Strickland/DeBerry/Ellis might average 15 mpg but that doesnt mean theyll play 15 min every game...these guys arent experienced D-1 players. Conditioning and fouls are real concerns. Moore getting minutes early in the year in easy games imo would be the best thing for him. Even if its 2nd half garbage time. At least hed get his feet wet and be more ready to contribute if he is called on in random conference games for a few min at a time.
Because he's working out getting stronger he's learning the game without having to worry about preparing for the upcoming game. And no playing 5 minutes a game does not make you better. Your hurting his confidence saying hey kid here's 5 minutes go play your 3rd string instead of saying hey your good now but if you take this year off and get stronger and better leaning to prepare for games you will tear them up next year.
Does a redshirt have some superpowers that I am not aware of? You act like Moore will become Kevin Love in between his 4th and 5th years. Would he be better that 5th year? Who cares? Mick has plenty of time to have another big guy ready when Moore's eligibility is up. Jason said it the other day...if something makes your team better this year, you go for it. There is no doubt that an extra 6'9" 260 pound body makes you better. Period. No matter how many minutes they play.
And did you really say a HS kid coming into D-1 playing 5 mpg wouldnt get better compared to sitting out? How bad do you wish Strickland wouldve played last year? You dont think he wouldve been better for it?
I havent had the time to read the whole argument but the 5th year allowed Sean Kilpatrick to become a 1st team all american, raised his draft status immeasurably, and helped the Cats win their first conference title under Cronin. Redshirts are an invaluable tool to use when your program is built on upperclassman.
Wasn't nothing unpredictable about our rotation at all.The only thing you can predict about Mick's rotation is that it will be unpredictable. You should have learned that this past season. None of us have a clue.
I completely agree on SK. No denying any of that. I just feel like our program is healthy enough now that we can send guys through in 4 years without holding them up, thinking that we'll need them that extra year or else we're screwed.
It has nothing to do with the health of a program. In fact when you have redshirts it typically means you have a very healthy program because you have a warm body that you simply cant get into the game because of other good players. Also it is not holding them up. Would sitting on the bench the entire year and losing eligibility be good for Quadri's career? Absolutely not. If he can go pro in year 4 then all the more kuddos to him. If not he has an extra year to make that dream happen. I think you are missing the point. It is about the future of the kid not the program where the decision needs to be made. In the end 9 times out of 10 it ends up benefiting both.
I definitely hear what youre saying. I dont get why it is just assumed that Moore is the last guy on the bench, worst guy on the team, hardly worthy of a chance in games though. You said something about sitting on the bench the entire season and losing eligibility...I dont look at it like that at all with him. We have 5 new big guys. I'd like to see Quadri battle in exhibition games and early in the year. I wouldnt rule out him beating out Strickland as the back up C. Thats what I think is better for him than anything, short or long term. We've been throwing 5 minutes around but I think it will be more than that. Bearcatboy says guys cant play 10 min bc they cant get in a rhythm. I think thats true for guys we need to score, but for our new big guys I'd want to keep them all fresh by spreading the minutes out early in the year. If Quadri is so unbelievably far behind that he literally would not play no matter what, then fine redshirt him. But there is no way that is the case given our current situation. 35 games at PF and C is 2800 minutes. Moore is good enough to get his fair chunk of those this year.
The only reason I'm saying Moore is because you can't redshirt Strickland already have and your not going to redshirt a juco (Ellis, Deberry) so that leave Clark and Moore and IMO Clark is better than Moore right now.
I will be very sad to see it if either Clark or Moore is so far behind they are held out without being given a chance to work things out in 2nd half early game action.
