Roster for next season

I have been saying for weeks that JJ will be playing the 5 and got crushed. Now Rothstein says it and everyone is cool with it? WTF?

that wasn't hard to figure. He won't get any minutes playing the 4 because he can't outplay either Lawrence or Rubles. If he wants to see the floor it will be at the 5. In my opinion if he gets minutes at the 5 that is not good for the team.

So what are you trying to say? :D

jason this is not a surprise. You have Rubles and Lawrence at the 4. We're rfer else is he going to play. Gaines won't be available for one reason or another and Modj is gone leaving Narsuk and Strickland. Late in season Narsuk was not used and Strickland is a guy viewed as a sleeper. If JJ is going to see the floor it will be the 5. Meaning he has to outplay Narsuk and Strickland as the roster stands now.

If we are going to go small I would perfer pg,Thomas,SK,Rubles and Lawrence. Really don't think JJ gets major minutes

No, what people have been saying is UC is in trouble if JJ plays the 5. You think they will be good if JJ plays the 5. Not that it's a big deal either way, he'll only be in for a few minutes before being in foul trouble.

Well......keeping it real.......here is the issue. It's no secret that the lack of offense was the major problem last season. So how do you upgrade the offense? Get more offensive players into the lineup. But Mick has high expectations on defense, so they have to play defense.

One of the problems for UC is that the best defensive players aren't offensive minded. Plus, the returning players are part of the problem offensively, since it was a huge problem this past year. So if you infuse the new offensive players into the lineup, we're probably giving up some on defense.

If we stuck with the guys who played this past season, the lineup would look like this:

PG ?????????
SG Kilpatrick
SF Rubles
PF JJ
C Nyarsuk/Gaines

That is a recipe for disaster on offense.

So you mix in the new guys for offense. Can they play D? That is for Mick and Company to get them to do.

Who would you rather have play the 5? Nyarsuk, Gaines, Strickland or JJ?

That is the question.

But I think the biggest question is who play PG.

both are huge question marks. Pg and c.

Again, there is NO way Thomas is not in the starting line up. He and SK are the only offensive threats at this point, and his length, athleticism and speed are valuable on D.

I agree about thomas and hope he works on adding strength and a arch for his shot

Thomas at the 3 w/ Sanders backing him up and Rubles/Lawrence at the 4. Rubles is already built perfectly for the 4, but we are gonna need to bulk up Lawrence. JJ/Strickland/? at center.

I think the 2, 3, and 4 will be fine. The only questions I have is 1 and 5. I understand the concerns with JJ but truly think style will determine how who plays the 5 will effect the team.

think your right Jeff. Part of the reason I don't think Mick is done recruiting. As you pointed out earlier the next 30 days could be very interesting for next year.

Jackson is not a 5 and never will be.
However, do you necessarily need someone playing center? You have to figure, with Shaquille Thomas, Rubles, Lawrence and Jackson out there, you can have some pretty decent height and create mismatches.
I'd prefer a big guy play, if we don't have anybody with considerable size though, I guess Jackson for a few minutes isn't so bad.

What bugs me about him though, is he's a tremendous athlete. Can jump out of the gym and yet, he won't just attack the basket! It's the same with Rubles. I know he can hit an inside jumper but he shouldn't be out on the perimeter faking 3's. Let the dude excel. Put him where he'd succeed. I think I'll have an aneurysm if I see the offensive ineptitude we had last year. We need to drive. We also need a few guys to see some shots they don't like. Chucking 3's is not our strength.

Outside of JD3 and SK who is going to hit 3's next season? Shaq's game is to attack and if he does with his length and leaping ability he is virtually impossible to stop when he pulls up. Once he learns to get some arc and put the ball on the rim look out!

With the roster the way it is currently set up, and not knowing what you get from the frosh, this team needs to be an attacking team. Rubles and Shaq can get to the rim. SK and JD3 can shoot. After that it's a crap shoot and I think Mick knows it and that is why he is trying so hard to find other pieces, like BJ Tyson, to the puzzle.

SK is a volume shooter. I think I'd be more comfortable with SK, JDIII, Guyn and Sanders sparingly, taking 3's. What I'm not comfortable with is being in an offense that has to rely on 3's. That's not a winning formula. We're full of tall athletic kids. Let's hope it's lob city with the guards and Shaquille Thomas shooting the only jumpers.

As for the new kids, I'd lay out the following goals: (Not necessarily in this order)
Get Strickland to the point he can put in 10-12 quality minutes a game.
Get Lawrence to the point he can put in 15-18.
Have Johnson or Caupain take some time at back up point in garbage time. Sub them for the others to get breathers as needed and I'd like to see Mormon hit the floor for about 10-12 as well. He's built a little thicker and can penetrate.

The followig schols have inquired about Eli Carter according to his AAU coach. Duke, Florida, Oregon State, Seton Hall, Cincinnati, Nebraska, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Xavier, Missouri, Buffalo, Marquette, Creighton and N.C. State.

Carter is WAY better than Seagears. If its between those 2 it should be a no brainer. I still think it would be of more value to add a serviceable big man. But finding one may be difficult this late in the game
