People want to doom and gloom especially with the conference thing. I don't know where we will end up, all I know is that we will be fine.

In the past 2 weeks UC has:
Signed a 5 star PF
Had their best current bball player say he is staying
Extended Mick's contract
Had 5 Star and #1 qb transfer here

That is a decent coup for a school w/o a conference.

You guys are naive if you think conference affiliation means nothing. How many times have you heard a recruit say they want to play in the Big East or the ACC? I'll answer it for you: many, many times.

You can cite Memphis as an example all you want but they are an anomoly. They were a huge basketball school back when they were in a good conference and they've been able to maintain their success largely due to the fact that their isn't much else in the way of sports in Memphis and thanks to FedEx who has given that program all the money they need.

Of course that said it doesn't mean UC can't be successful but let's quit pretending it doesn't mean anything.

To Westside: UC was successful in the Big East when it was the best basketball conf. in the country, no reason it couldn't be successfull in the ACC.

You're naive if you think that a recruit picks a school because of the conference they are in. No one here is saying it is irrelevant. Conference affiliation has a place. In college basketball, it is a small one. In college football, it is absolutely huge.

Some bball players and their handlers place a decent amount of weight on what shoe company certain schools are. Do you think it is a coincidence that when Lawrence signed he was wearing a red adidas shirt, or Obekpa being on a Nike team almost his entire prep career and going to a Nike school over an adidas school?

In the Enquirer article on the recruitment of Jermaine Lawrence, Mick mentioned that he was very nervous about the conference issue, but it never once came up from Lawrence or his family.

What about Kentucky? Wanna play in the SEC? Gonzaga, do you wanna play in WCC? Arizona, PAC-12? BYU is in the top 20 for recruiting classes this year, wanna play in the Mountain West? There are may more I could mention, but conference usually plays a small role in where someone picks to go to school. Kids wanna go where there is tradition, opportunities to showcase their talents, a good environment, a good coaching staff, nice facilities, etc.

UK? They are in a big conference and always have been. And yes, many kids want to play in the SEC. Same with Pac-12. Gonzaga rarely has top recruiting classes and BYU, are you serious? One year they have a top 20 recruiting class. So what? Again, no one said it's impossible to be successful and I don't think UC will go to that level.

I never said they pick a school based on conference but quit pretending that it makes no difference. And yes, others on here have said it is irrelevant. If you think it is such a small role then why don't you go back and look up some quote from Cronin because I know you preach everything he says. He constantly mentioned the advantages to recruiting to the Big East. Why do you think he started recruiting NY so hard? Coincidence?

Mick recruited NY all the time as an assistant here and at Louisville. Satterfield, Dermarr Johnson to name a couple. I also think Garcia might have been from New York without taking the time to look it up. Playing in MSG sure didn't hurt but having Savino on staff has helped recruit NY/NJ area a heck of a lot more than what conference you are in.

"all the time" is a just bit of hyberbole...Garcia was from New York but Demarr Johnson was not, he was from the DC area. Maybe you are thinking of Stokes, though he was from Buffalo.

UC already got SK and Lance Stephenson before Savino was even hired. Not to downplay the Savino hire because he has been great but there is a reason Mick immediately looked to him. Not only was he a very good recruiter but he had connections to the northeast which is exactly what Mick wanted because he understood that northeast players wanted to play in the Big East. I don't feel like taking the time but there are numerous quotes from current players and players UC was recruiting that specifically talked about how important it was for them to play in the Big East.

Yup. Stokes is who I was thinking of. Thanks.

Don't get me wrong, the Big East definitely helped in recruiting but it wasn't the reason recruits came to UC. It was one of many factors. In football, the conference plays a much bigger role because it is your shot to get into a major bowl game. Not being in the Big East would be a bigger thing if there still was a Big East. The Catholic 7 league has the name but isn't close to being what the Big East was. Most (top) basketball recruits look at schools with the following criteria:

1. Chance to play in NCAA Tourney
1a. Chance to play in NBA
2. Coaching staff
3. Playing time
4. Play with other good players
5. Conference affiliation

I am basing this on what you see from recruits all the time when they select a school. Conference affiliation is never the first thing out of their mouth and often not even mentioned or just mentioned in passing. Sometimes it is better to be a big fish in a smaller pond when it comes to basketball. You don't want to be mid-major but if you can dominate a good league, that is good for recruiting.

The downside to the AAC is the TV money. That hurts and will continue to hurt.

The SEC, big basketball conference? That's a head-scratcher. What other SEC basketball team, besides Florida, is filled with 5 star guys? Gonzaga has made a name for themselves and the past 2-3 years have had top 25 recruiting classes. BYU has had some nice teams the past few years, with Davies and Jimmer. SMU has had back-to-back good recruiting classes. Temple, a team coming into our conference, is another good example of solid recruiting. While UC can't recruit based on conference now, it also gives them an advantage in some ways. They can say, we still make the tourney and are a pretty well known team, and you can come here and get more playing time and be the face of a program, rather than just another good player.

You don't think the SEC is a big basketball conference? What on earth are you smoking? Have they been as good as the BE and ACC? No, but it's still a power conference. In the last 10 years they have had 3 national championships. UK and Florida continually get top recruiting classes and Alabama and Missouri get 5* recruits as well. It's obviously a power conference.

BYU has had some "nice" teams? Cool. I know we want UC to have a nice team and all. BYU is average. They had a good year in 2011 but other than that they are a very average team. Temple is a good example? What have they done?

You say the lack of conference gives them an advantage by "They can say, we still make the tourney and are a pretty well known team, and you can come here and get more playing time and be the face of a program, rather than just another good player."

how does this have anything to do with conference affiliation? They couldn't say that before?

No, before we were in the BE, we could and definitely did use that to our advantage. Now, we have to shift to stuff like I mentioned above. Being in a lesser conference forces us to play the mid-major card. Look at Xavier, they have been able to get some good recruits while in the A-10. If we really emphasize the advantages of this tough situation, we can be very successful in recruiting. Whining about not being in the ACC gets us nowhere. BYU, South Florida, among others, are ranked higher than Mizzou in the recruting ranks this year. UTEP, UC, Colorado are ranked higher than Alabama. The SEC is not a power conference or a mid-major. I would put it right in between the two.
