I'm a relatively new fan. Is it common to just tell a player that has a scholarship "Sorry we found someone better"? Seems kinda unfair to me

Cincinnati's staff does a great job of being honest with the kids they recruit in terms of expectations. Mick isn't going to tell someone like Kelvin Gaines that he will be a starter from day 1. However, in major college basketball it quite common that coaches help kids find a better landing spot (through friends at other universities). Mick has only had one such player and that was Tim Crowell in 2006. It is well known that they basically had a one year agreement rather than two.

Carter is WAY better than Seagears. If its between those 2 it should be a no brainer. I still think it would be of more value to add a serviceable big man. But finding one may be difficult this late in the game

I dunno. Obviously Carter is a better scorer but he is similar to SK in that he gets it from being a high volume shooter. The guy isn't a great shooter though and he isn't much in the way of a PG. He is a SG IMO and UC doesn't need that. He is a very good FT shooter though.

I haven't seen too much of Seagers to be overly impressed but I came away with the impression that he is more of a natural PG which I think UC needs more than another SG.

Probably showing us in both conferences ? Great now to the Whatever it is , so forgetable we are lost in the same sentence.

... Or it's just a typo. If conference affiliation really meant anything in basketball, we wouldn't have had the success we did in the metro and C-USA.

Eli Carter: 14.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.8 turnovers. Shoots 38.4% from the field, 32% from 3 and 86.4% from the FT line all in 29 minutes.

Sean Kilpatrick: 17.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 2.0 turnovers. Shoots 39.8% from the field, 30.7% from 3 and 73.8% from the FT line all in 34 minutes.

Basically a SK clone, not sure how I feel about another volume shooter.

honest question... do you really belive it was uc that was successful or the fact that uc had a hall of fame type coach that made it successful?

rude awakening for those who think uc will be okay with cronin in the aac. couldn't get high recruits to the big east. cant wait to see the talent he brings in a few years in the mighty aac.

Yeah, I'd hate to get more recruits like Jermaine Lawrence.

Exactly.

In basketball, conference affiliation means little in terms of recruiting. It is a nice feather to have in your cap but, with 68 spots in the Tourney, it is not that important what league you are in as long as your aren't in a 1 bid league. The league UC will be in for basketball will be a nice league. Not great but still good.

Players don't go to UK to play in the SEC. They don't go to Memphis to play in CUSA.

Memphis is a perfect example-they have gotten countless numbers of great recruits, even while in C-USA. They haven't even come close to how successful we have been over the past 3 years, do they get better recruits because they are in a better conference? No, tradition and recent success usually play the biggest factors.

Memphis has three recruits coming in that are in the top 35. Apparently those recruits can't wait to play in "the mighty aac."

You guys are naive if you think conference affiliation means nothing. How many times have you heard a recruit say they want to play in the Big East or the ACC? I'll answer it for you: many, many times.

You can cite Memphis as an example all you want but they are an anomoly. They were a huge basketball school back when they were in a good conference and they've been able to maintain their success largely due to the fact that their isn't much else in the way of sports in Memphis and thanks to FedEx who has given that program all the money they need.

Of course that said it doesn't mean UC can't be successful but let's quit pretending it doesn't mean anything.

To Westside: UC was successful in the Big East when it was the best basketball conf. in the country, no reason it couldn't be successfull in the ACC.

That's because three of their recruits are from Memphis. Memphis may be the best place per capita for basketball talent. The vast majority of their big time recruits are from Memphis.

What about Kentucky? Wanna play in the SEC? Gonzaga, do you wanna play in WCC? Arizona, PAC-12? BYU is in the top 20 for recruiting classes this year, wanna play in the Mountain West? There are may more I could mention, but conference usually plays a small role in where someone picks to go to school. Kids wanna go where there is tradition, opportunities to showcase their talents, a good environment, a good coaching staff, nice facilities, etc.

College basketball is one of the few sports today where anyone can find success. Sure there are big dogs, but in no other sport do you find the underdog in the conversation more than in college basketball. What's important for UC is renewing the tradition and making Cincinnati a place kids want to play at. We can talk all day (and some do) about conference realignment, but it won't make much of a difference. Support your school, create an exciting environment, and the rest will work itself out.
