I actually don't see a lot of weakness. He doesn't turn the ball over as much as KJ or ST. He's had like 4 or 5 games with 4 rebounds or more and one more with 3. His assists could go up a little bit. He can create and has nice handles. He's got a pretty quick shot. He can make outside shots. He can make a floater or a pull up J. He showed us last night he can make a step back long jumper. He's sneaky and shifty and can get to the rim for uncontested layups. It would be nice if he could create more fouls. At one point last night he was the most important guy to know where he was on the floor for both teams as he was in at least one other game this year. His D seems serviceable...maybe could get a little better. He shoots 80% from the line.

I don't think it's even a question he needs to be out there.

In the first half last night, Cobb drove to the hoop and got rejected badly. He didn't really drive again until the second half and used his body to shield his defender to get a layup. I like that attitude and that is what we need IMO. He wanted to ball in his hands and he was not afraid to shoot when the game was on the line. 5 Rebounds for Cobb is also pretty remarkable as SDSU is a pretty tall team with no player starting less than 6'4".

If he and Caupain can pull in 3-5 boards a game and Ellis and Clark are also out there getting 8-10??? Add in Thomas getting 5-7. That's a pretty good rebounding team. And yes...that was a nice move to use his body to get that easy (well he made it look easy) bucket with his left hand. He's not afraid to shoot. He did a pretty good job against the press.

We need one more of him...only taller:)

Wouldn't that be something if he pulls an Ellis and is like 7' tall next season

I've watched the play a few times and there isn't even a little contact. KJ cuts in front of the player, but it's pretty clear the guy fell because his own ankle twisted. The picture quality sucks, but you should be able to see that for yourself. ESPN isn't the end-all-be-all of sports reporting, but even they commented on the questionable call. If I saw their legs get tangled that would be much different.

It doesn't matter in the end, because UC won. That's really the most important thing.

I agree I didn't think it was a foul. Being in house, not one person there rooting for the home team saw a foul. After four replays I didn't see a foul. After watching the link provided I don't see a foul. Kj was not moving into the player and his hands were up. It's good defense. The player tried to adjust and lost his foot. Any contact that may have happened was incidental and moot since Kj was in position. There's contact on every play a player drives to the hoop, doesn't mean there's a foul. The defender has a right to a position on the floor the same as the player. What you can't do is move into the position or lean into the offensive player. Kj cut off his lane and had position and did not initiate contact. If you are driving and trip over a player that is not an automatic foul. The refs saw the guy fall and blew the whistle. After an insanely loud chorus of boos and looking up themselves and watching the replay (I saw one of them looking up) they knew they blew it. We did not have one call go against us in ot. It is a moot point since we won and I am incredibly happy we didn't lose after a controversial call.

I'll take it if it was a make-up call after that clear goaltend from earlier. I have homer bias but that one shot was absolutely on its way down.

Can we dispense with the "Morman sucks" comments. I guess I'm seeing something completely different in that kid. Don't get me wrong, he's not perfect and makes his share of mistakes, but I like him a lot! He does a lot of things that don't show up on the stat sheet. He brings a level of intensity, quickness and attitude that I love. He is one of the few that can create higher percentage shots for himself by getting the ball inside. Granted, he's in a shooting slump, but he had some awesome defensive plays last night. He makes free throws. His potential excites me and I'm always happy when Mick puts him in because I want to see him play. I have visions of Immanuel McIlroy and Herb Jones defensively when I watch him. He's a redshirt freshman and I like him better than some of the ones who get more playing time.

I completely agree about morman. I like the raw potential and toughness he has. He makes understandble freshman mistakes and once he cleans that up he will be a great player. His defense is already better than most on the team. With that said, and I will pick on you a little because I know you can take it, he might be the ugliest of our offensive guys with throwing up bricks and you certainly have a lot of complaints about that type of play and offense. I do like as you said that he is aggressive and will drive the ball.

I remember seeing one that looked really close for us and I thought might have been a hair late. Being in house I didn't get a replay.

Great win, great atmosphere last night. Would've been nice to have more butts in the seats but I expect nothing less from our "fans". And honestly just scheduling an east coast game at 900 tells fans that TV is more important than fans going to games so it's no mystery fans choose to watch from home. Back on track, though, even the most positives of fans will admit that we struggle offensively and with us being young and struggling and hosting one of the best defensive teams in the country I don't see how anyone can complain after a W last night. Yes there is plenty of room for improvement but this team played hard and earned the win and it is a great moment in the young season. Let's enjoy it and root like hell on saturday.

We could definitely improve offensively. KJ scored 9 last night but only took 3 shots from the floor. He isn't always going to score that efficiently. I like where Ellis is at. I don't think feeding him in the post should be a priority. Just put backs and face up short set jumpers for the most part. I like that we ran a little iso for Shaq but that's something only worth doing a couple times a game imo unless he has a serious mismatch. I feel like Mick is making an effort to help individual guys get involved. DeBerry has great touch around the rim. What a good big man to have on the bench. We haven't had a big body guy like him in that role who can actually give us baskets in the half court for a while. Clark seems like he's going to find a way to get in double figures every game. I agree with the people talking about Cobb and Caupain playing together. They are the best guys to have in the backcourt if we want to avoid those dreaded 7 minutes without a FG stretches. I think we should have a relatively easy time getting in the 60s at least vs VCU.

I was really impressed with the crowd last night. Even though we had 9k it was a loud 9k. Especially with students off campus I thought the atmosphere was electric. I also think we really helped push our players. There is nothing better than a rocking 5/3 arena.

Wrong, a rocking RENOVATED 5/3 arena probably tops it

Oh, you're just jealous. Makes sense. Maybe you should have earned a full scholarship and you wouldn't leave with any debt. I just graduated and I have no student loan debt. Sucks to be you I guess....

Wow, the arrogance in this post is highly disturbing. Congrats on your scholarship and no debt. Since you have no debt, maybe you can go buy a dictionary and look up the word humility. You seem to be lacking in that department.

I'm not going to question the quality of the SDSU win. That's a team that beat then #25 Utah, who beat Wichita State and whose only other loss is by 3 to Kansas; crushed Pitt and has a quality loss to Arizona. The Washington game was bad but UW is now ranked and unbeaten. They're a good team playing a grueling schedule that's hit a rough patch. Excellent gritty win by the 'Cats.

They did some good stuff in isolation last night on the offensive end. Granted, a lot of what they run looks like that first game for Coach Dale at Hickory High when they were figuring out the "4 passes" offense, but it's clear Mick is trying to clear some space for the playmakers he has. The guys were more aggressive attacking the hoop and didn't flinch when things didn't go their way inside (see: Shaq vs. Nebraska). Hopefully, what Troy said about the team galvanizing through adversity and being close on and off the court will develop into a cohesive, eventually solid offensive unit.

No sugar coating the awful loss to Ole Miss and the dubious giveaway in Lincoln but a good win last night followed by a win vs. VCU would mitigate those blemishes pretty well. I've no problem with folks getting frustrated (we're fans, it's what we do) but let's also enjoy the journey. I love watching players and teams get better and better and our boys will only get better.

The few, the proud.

(AAC teams that have beaten top 25 opposition. Does "few" even apply?)

hi -- vcu ram fan here.

We at ramnation watched the SDSU game with intense interest. Everyone agrees this is going to be a tough game. The Bear cats play terrific defense. It should be a great game regardless of the outcome.

If you are interested, please come over a talk about the game with us at vcuramnation..

Welcome! I always enjoy when fans from other programs come here to discuss games and give insights into their team which many of us only see once in a while. Our goal here is to always be respectful of everyone's opinion and I hope you feel comfortable posting here leading up to and even after the game this weekend.

I think the key to the game Saturday is going to be UC's ability to handle the VCU press without turning the ball over. If UC makes VCU play offense against a set up Bearcat Defense, VCU will more than likely struggle to score. Combine that with the Bearcats getting some easy buckets off breaking the press and that will be the recipe for a UC win. UC will press in this game too but it will be a different kind of press. UC will be opportunistic when going for steals but the main goal of UC's press is to slow the other team down and not allow them the full shot clock to run their offense. You may see some resemblance to what Louisville does a lot in pressing and falling back into a match up zone. This is what UC did to SDSU with great success.

I completely agree. Criticize the play but let's dispense with the personal insults. I feel the same way about the head coach criticize a decision or philosophy but don't disparage the person.
