Sean Kilpatrick Eager (Koch)

That is just flat out not true. Larry Davis really turned it on in Big East play last year. It really seemed like the light was coming on. He was one of the leaders in Big East play in 3 point percentage.

Also, SK didn't lose time to Parker. Parker was seen as the back up point guard. SK is seen as a wing. He lost time to Deonte, Lance and Bishop, and maybe Dixon to an extent, but he was a disappointment this year.

Also, I think you are discounting the possibility that SK was better in practice than even our coaches expected him to be as the year went on.

I'm not saying SK is going to come in all the sudden and be a member of any all Big East team, but the argument that because he didn't play last year means he won't be any good next year is flawed to me.[/QUOTE]

Again, Here is what Mick said:

Mick Cronin didn’t hesitate when he was asked who would pick up the scoring slack next season in the wake of the Lance Stephenson’s decision to leave UC for the NBA after one year.

“Sean Kilpatrick is the answer for that,” the UC coach said. “That’s why he was red-shirted.”

Now to me that is a little more than a good player off the bench or just another starter. He is counting on him to be the scorer for this team.

Mick is the one saying he is basically filling LS shoes, not me.

Exactly. And am I correct in stating that Sean will be 21 in January? Pretty old for a RS freshman. Was he dominating in high school because he was older than most of the competition?

I believe Sk will be a very good player, he has to much scoring ability i think in that area he will be fine, can he Defend is my concern considering he doesnt have the best athleticism in the world? I think he red shirted Sk to make LS happy. I remember them in highschool playing against eachother and SK was calling out LS and hit like 3 threes in his face. This kid will be fine our scoring will mainly come from the guards hell if CW hits 3 quarters of his layups he would average 20 himself.

HAHA

You must not have watched Youtube. They were best friends. In the gym till 2am together.

All I'm saying and I believe Catpaw is on the right track with me here is that Mick is the one saying that a redshirt Frosh, is the one who is going to be the go to man when we need a bucket. That is what I got out of the article.

My point is that is an awful lot of pressure and hype to put on a guy who hasn't played in a Bearcat uni yet.

I agree with the hype being quite a lot. Mick is going to either look brilliant or fall flat on his face. There is not much room for in betweens. I wonder if Mick said this as a way to motivate SK even more? I don't think he needs motivation, and I think his 2 AM shooting sessions with LS speak enough to his dedication, but maybe this is a way to get in SK's head in a positive way? Some people are better when the pressure is on and they know everyone is counting on them. Just throwing out ideas. I would hope Mick would have a reason for putting all that pressure on SK.

Actually that was not the context of the quote. Koch took the quote out of a conversation they were having when Mick mentioned not using the available scholarship. Mick said that there was no one out there that was going to make an immediate impact and that SK was the answer for that.

And SK should almost definitely make the biggest impact of any of the new players, which is the real context of what Mick was talking about.

Here is the context of Cronin's comment:

But it doesn’t appear that Cronin will be able to find that player on the recruiting trail this late in the recruiting season.

“There’s nobody out there that’s going to be able to come in as a freshman and make that kind of impact,” Cronin said. “Those kind of guys aren’t available. Sean Kilpatrick is the answer for that. That’s why he was redshirted.”

That does not mean that he is going to be our go to scorer. Just that he will make the biggest impact of the new guys.

No no,

The context was, who is going to take over in Lance's absence.

Mick did not hesitate and said SK. That is pretty cut and dry to me.

So which one is it? He will be the best incoming player or he will take over for LS? It looks as if the head coach himself is confused.

That is possible. Perhaps trying to groom a leader. But I'm still going with he is trying to put the fans at ease by saying SK will take over for LS, not to worry.

You might be right but I sure hope not. If this is done to appease the fan base, then Mick is potentially setting up SK for failure. Not a wise move. I hope this isn't his thought process here.

There doesn't appear to be anybody out there that is going to fill the void left by Lance. Of the new comers, SK will step up in Mick's mind and help fill that void.

Besides Kilpatrick, Cronin said he’s expecting more production from returning players such as Yancy Gates, Jaquon Parker, Darnell Wilks, Ibrahima Thomas and Cashmere Wright.

SK isn't going to step in right away and be our go to scorer. If you are reading it that way, you are reading it wrong.

I agree 10000% with that. I'm not sure what you are reading, but its not the statement Mick made in the article. It is very cut and dry. There is no other context needed. Let me refresh you.

One thing in the article caught my attention. SK said that Lance's decision came as a shock to him. With all the speculation (right or wrong) that Lance never intended to stay passed one year, it is interesting that Lance's friend and room mate was shocked with his decision to go pro.

As a Mick supporter, I still don't understand the quote, regardless of contect. The whole "that's why Kilpatrick was redshirted" makes no sense. If anything he'd make more of an impact as a Sophomore.

I think the redshirt was because of Lance. Kilpatrick was penciled in the lineup before we landed him late in the game. With Lance here, SK's minutes were more than likely going to be limited at best. Thus, the decision to redshirt him.

OK. He got redshirted because Mick felt LS was going to take minutes from SK.
What if Lance didn't go pro? Would Mick Gray Shirt SK?

Does not make sense.

Why are we still talking about this? SK was redshirted. Everything else doesn't matter at this point. We should be focusing on how he can help the team this year instead of why he didn't play last year. Last year is over.

Because it is May 4th. No one knows how he can help this team, since he was redshirted.

My biggest issue is with the "that's why he redshirted" quote. It's bs. You do not redshirt a guy because he's too good and you want to save the year, with the type of team we had. What if Lance got hurt in January, Februrary,..? Couldn't we have used some scoring off the bench? Most teams would like to have depth, even at the 7,8,9 spots.

So it's either A.) our coaching staff made a downright idiotic decision to not use a kid who could help, on a team that desperately needed it. B.) the comment is completely bogus and Mick is just throwing is name out there b/c he's new. IMO, it really has to be one or the other and I think it's the latter.

You know if Mick was counting on him to score this year he could have done that as a Soph as well, maybe he'd be even better after a year of experience??? I know crazy, right? Were they that concerned with the 2013-2014 season?

Look, I'm not saying SK won't/can't be good but let's be honest. He was a 3 star recruit, he has never played. It's so hard for even top 10 kids handle the transition out of high school to college (See Lance, THE ALL TIME leading scorer in NY) IMO, it's unfair to put that type of comment on a McDAA caliber of player and here we have it with a kid who wasn't even in the top 100.

Sorry, just being honest but these comments singling out a 3 star RS Frosh are incredibly stupid and/or insulting. You don't single out a kid like that and coach should know better. If he even says "we're hoping SK can pick up some of load" would be fine. Again, the "that's why we redshirted him" makes absolutely no sense. You redshirted him b/c you knew he'd be taking over the following year and you'd be counting in him? What????
