Think we'll have to see how thins look in October. Where does the players strength lie? Don't think they will with only 4 frontcourt players.

Gates, Jackson, Gaines and Mbodj... what was it last year? Gates, Thomas, Jackson, Wilks and Biggie- but the minutes Biggie and Wilks played could be eaten up easily, imo.

A) They were vaulabe minutes. B) You're an injury away from being in a very bad position.
my favorite observation today was not visual, but verbal...more than once, you could hear Gates talking to his teammates, instructing them as well as telling them to play harder...being a real leader on the floor...love seeing Gates' maturity and growth...
one other leadership note, Kilpatrick...he was basically the coach and cheerleader for the team today...he is full of energy and excitement, even when he is not on the floor...this year the team is Gates' but there is no question that next year, this will be Kilpatrick's team...
Overall, the guys played well today...they seemed to let up at times, but they still competed and won...here is some individual notes:
Davis...with each game, i am really getting excited about Davis...he is not too flashy, but he has seems to have an all around game...he has a nice looking shot...i am starting to see why there was some excitement with his signing
Gates...as stated above, he was very vocal and took control...at times he demanded the ball...he is in great condition...he showed some real nice post moves today
Shaq...the kid can score around the hoop...he has some very nice post moves...i hope he doesn't get broken in half in the BEast...so far, i have been really impressed with his handles...not only can he sky, he seems to be able to leap quickly and powerfully
Mbodj...first time seeing the guy...seems to be pretty solid body wise...he was not afraid to attack the hoop...what i liked the most was the fact that he did not give up on rebounds, continuing to jump and go after the ball...definitely seems to be a step ahead of Toyloy
Jackson...the guy is aggressive...he did not really do much offensively today but he did provide solid defense...one highlight for Jackson was that he blocked an alley-oop (got called for the foul but it was questionable)
Sanders...looks like someone has him in the gym...i believe someone mentioned previously that the Summer League is not a good match for his style of play, and i can see that...he is not standing out for the good nor the bad...definitely going to be a wait and see

I went last Wednesday and noticed the same thing. SLATS was up pretty big so Yancy was on the bench for a while, letting the new guys play. He was coaching them up nonstop. SLATS was playing against Steve Stewart and Kendall Owens. For those that don't know, these guys are small, quick, pesky defenders. They were giving Guyn and Davis some trouble handling the ball.
But there were a couple consecutive possessions where Guyn got into the lane and had a 3 on 2. The first time he threw the ball away and the next got called for a charge. Guyn looked to the bench, and Yancy told him he needs to shoot cause he was open. Well a couple possessions later the same situation happened and Guyn hit a nice floater in the lane. Guyn looked over to the bench and you could hear Yancy scream, "I told you!" And I'm pretty sure Ge came down the next possession and scored another bucket.
I absolutely LOVED seeing that from Yancy though.

That's great to hear about Yancy- one of the fears that would be easy to have about this team would be that leadership would be an issue after losing such a critical and large class... glad to hear Yancy is stepping up, the big man is poised to have a big year. As for SK, kid is becoming an icon... anyone check out his twitter feed? lol

It's an interesting situation, if they had a player like Wilks who could split time between the 3 and the 4 right now (effectively) I'd say definitely redshirt Ellis but since they don't I don't think it will happen but it could. Shaq could become a player that can play a hybrid 3/4 but he certainly doesn't have the strength right now to play at the 4.
We could always go the Villanova route and play 4 guards/small forwards. With Cash, Dixon, the supposed resurgance of Parker (..and yes I cringe everytime the next coming is coronated during the offseason) SK and almost the whole incoming class this seems like a possibility.

Yeah but you can't really want us to compare to 'Nova. No disrespect but we do not have the shooting or driving to the hoop and actually getting a good look talent or defensive capabilities as Jay Wright teams have.

Balance. If you have a team that you have to guard multiple positions it puts pressure on the defense. Balance.

One thing I have heard consistently about Guyn is he looks to pass first. But scouts have also said he runs the break very well and has a nice floater and baseline short jumper when he chooses to use it. Ge works extremely hard and this will shorten his learning curve.

Well tonight the show was all Justin Jackson, he played great. Whoever compared him to Dennis Rodman first, o wait that was me not Lance's blog, was dead on accurate.
Yancy nearly powerbombed a ref, that was solid.
Chek is going to be good, hes big, tall, strong and athletic. Was very impressed with his play this evening.
Nothing else really stood out, the slats team was filled so playing time all around was limited. Add on it was essentially a blow out from the get go.

I was at the SLATS game tonight as well. It was the first game I was able to attend. I was disappointed that Shaq wasn't there tonight, but was impressed overall by the new guys coming in. I have to agree with Legend. Jackson was awesome tonight. I love the intensity and passion he plays with. Guyn is strong and quick and handles the ball pretty well. He is not afraid of contact and I think he will do well in the Big East. Cheikh Mbodj is a vast improvement over Thomas. He can shoot well and can rebound. Davis looked pretty good. He is also quick and pretty physical. Sanders didn't do much tonight. I agree that he would do better in a structured offense where he can get open and shoot. I'm not sure he made one shot tonight. Ellis played a little bit, but he didn't do much. He is really skinny. I'm sure he will put on some weight and get some playing time down the road. Gates was getting mauled most of the game and he was clearly getting angry. At one point he yelled to the ref that if he gets hit in the ribs one more time he is going to take someones head off. The ref said "you gotta do what you gotta do." After that, the refs started calling fouls on the opposing team. They were triple and quadruple teaming Gates all night and hacking away at him. Lastly, I gotta hand it to Herb Jones. He played almost the entire game and hustled all over the place. It was a dominating performance by SLATS. They were up by at least 10 almost the entire game.

After seeing ellis last night, there is no way imo that he will not be redshirted this season.
agree- you can never predict injuries, but barring anything unforeseen- no way he plays.
i also want to add that people expecting gaines to be a big rotation guy this year- i dont think we should expect anything more than Biggie caliber minutes this year. come in, help us out for a few minutes, but never see time unless its a necessity. not saying he will be used in the same way (i.e. only play vs half court teams) but rather just the same quantity of minutes. he has a long way to go.
