Brooks this year has been extremely soft in the lane. He often gets the ball poked away on rebounds and passes. When he gets the ball he brings it down often leading to a turnover. Taking it to the basket he rarely goes up strong, often pulls up to shoot short jumper or hook.

Wouldn’t have thought that rebounding statistic that is crazy, for me his is so solid defensively he has to have the most charges on the team per minute played, he fouls quite a bit but I don’t mind that because it lets the offensive players know you arnt going to get an easy bucket

looking through some stats, kaiser gates has 47 3 point attempts and 7 2 point attempts. i can see micks face now when somebody doesn't run him off the 3 point line.

Brooks problem is he goes for blocks and leaves his man instead of boxing out. It's been an issue with different players over the years. We've given up a lot of offensive boards this year and a big reason for that is guys going for blocks and not boxing out. Smart players know when to go for blocks and when not to. Right now brooks is trying to be a shot blocker and going after everything. Washington does this sometimes too, even getting several goaltends out of it. Ellis was really bad at this as well. Blocking is about timing and when you're late it's pointless to go up because you've left a man open under the rim for the rebound

I think UC can win this game but if we lose I know it means absolutely nothing about how our season will go.

We arent supposed to win in a rivals gym. But I do think that’s something that Xavier’s does and we don’t nearly as much: win when they’re not supposed to. It’s only thing that separates the 2 programs right now. Xavier wins when they are the under dog far more than uc does. Would love that narrative to change tonight

I think the reason Xavier Has won a lot is because they’ve had a better team. Since 05, we might have had a better team 2 or 3 times. Hard to win in that case.

Really want this one guys. We have got to own the city. I would probably feel a bit better about our chances had we played at least one competitive game to this point.

I think it all starts from the top. We have a coach who has viewed this game as more of a nuisance than a rivalry game. As long as he sees this game as "just another game"...it's going to be difficult to win. Whether anyone wants to believe it or not (especially coach) it IS a rivalry and it IS extremely important to win every year. Maybe it has nothing to do with conference championships but there are other important milestones to accomplish outside of conference and tourneys. This is one of them...and perhaps the ONLY other important game every year outside of conference and tourneys.

It's important to the fans which should make it important to the coach. Half of me believes coach is just hedging in pressers in the case of a loss. That is not the way to go about winning. Tell the fans it's important and tell them it's embarrassing when we lose. The players all know it's important no matter how much the coach downplays the game. It creates a disconnect between the fans, the players and the coach.

It's time for the coach to change the narrative and there are no more excuses. Almost every year this game is highlighted by national press as one of the most intense rivalries in the game. I think it's time our coach embraces that fact and gets into the hype. Either that or the players have to take it on themselves to consider this a must win game. It may never be a must win to get in the dance but it's ALWAYS a must win for the fans in the city (or across the nation) of each team.

I think we're in a good place. I haven't heard anything from the press conference or radio show that has made me think Coach doesn't see this as a big game.

I wonder if any downplaying you speak of has to do with the brawl. And not wanting to invite a bunch of tension and hostility back into the equation.

a few thoughts Jake.

First, no way do I buy the its another game stuff. Mick has coached under Huggins and he graduated from UC. He is a lifelong Cincinnati resident. He has to know what this game means to the city and its fan base.

Second this is a game against a ranked opponent. This is big for our resume.

I do think you make a good point about not wanting to invite tension and hostility. Truth is I would be surprised if he had to do much in the way of firing up the guys for this game. They all know what this game means regardless what they say for the public.

I noticed they are practicing with Nike balls

If this is true its incredibly smart. I wonder if they do this for any team who plays with Nike/UA balls

IMO Wilson makes the best Basketball and I'm glad UC doesn't use the UA basketballs.

As dumb as it sounds, the feel of the ball does matter. Im not a fan of Nike or UA balls.

I just typed in Google "most intense college BB rivalries" and the first article had this game in the top 5 along with UL vs KY and Duke vs NC, IN and Purdue etc. I have never heard coach talking about it in that sense of how historic it is. I have heard him say "it's just another game we have to win" etc..."it's going to be an intense environment and tough to win"..."it's not a conference game"...etc. I think he has even said in the past "if he had his choice he would not play it every year". That was after the brawl but I'm not sure that was his point.

Well we do play it every year, it is a nationally recognized rivalry, and there is a lot of civic pride and bragging rights in the game. As long as we are playing it we should probably treat it that way. Why would we not want to publicize it that way nationally to get more viewers? Talk it up...get the word out...bring more fans in...let recruits see it...etc. Join the hype train...lol!

I think over the last 2 years Mick has changed the narrative about the game though. He is taking it way more serious.

I mean he basically admitted that he didnt do any scouting for Alabama State and was completely focused on Xavier.

Still if we lose to them in their gym, I just don't think it says a whole lot about how good UC is.

Doesn't sound dumb at all.

Losing to a ranked team in there gym is not the end of the world but I am a Cincinnati resident and a fan of UC. Losing to X would diminish the season for me. I am a UC fan we do not lose to X.

Should I divorce my wife?

We are picking up a new puppy and she arranged for us to pick it up on SATURDAY IN FORT WAYNE!!!

So I've got to drive all the way to Fort Wayne in the AM and pull over at a rest stop and watch the Shootout on my iPad.

She picked the worst day to arrange this dog for pickup!!

You don’t need to divorce her... but you could teach her to drive and be more independent.
