Completely agree. Jenifer takes care of the ball better and is a better passer. Cane Broome is most effective when he can lower his head and just play playground ball. He was effective late first half cause Mick let him be selfish and go out and score. But that's not a recipe for winning, team ball game in, game out. Broome wasn't as effective 2nd half cause the defense adjusted. Jenifer is a distributor first. If we make open shots then he looks good. When we don't people want to point to him cause he doesn't score at will. Well that's not his game, Micks game or a winning have formula. You want to point blame in this game, first and foremost our players don't get up and play lights out in this game like Xavier does....and I guarantee that's not Micks doing. We just don't have cocky, punk ass players. You walk in that environment and learn from previous shootouts, you shouldn't need any more motivation than that. Other blame can be pointed to Kyle Washington. He just flat out didn't bring his A game or effort today. I actually thought the refs did a good job today. They let players play and we didn't really get shafted. I thought the charge on Cumberland was a bad call and the red that T'd Mick up was out of line cause the ref he was yelling at should have that decision, not a guy all the way across the court that has no clue what Mick was even complaining about. Obviously there was an altercation between Macura and Moore to get them T's, so maybe find out what's up before you T up a coach from 50 feet away. But the refs called an even game, being in Cintas that's somewhat of a miracle.

You're advocating for Jenifer over Broome? Seriously? If Jenifer continues to start and/or get most of the playing time, this season will be the biggest disappointment of Mick's 12 years. And, that says a lot!

When did he out play Broome? Jj being out there was a problem from the start. Mucura didn’t have to do anything on defense. He could help whoever he wanted. Don’t hate Jenifer but he isn’t a great shooter and he’s size is a problem.

Jenifer was really close to starting 2-2 for 5 points.

Starting JJ was not the problem. He out played Broome up to this point. He was not the reason we lost. Many of our players did not show up.

First he hadn’t really out played him. Cane had turned the ball over more but the overall game went to cane.

Second it was clear who the better player was. So it’s on mick to get Broome in with the other 4 so they can start to gel. If we had no big games before conference play then this approach could at least be justifiable.

That didn’t cost us the game, but I sure as hell would prefer my best 5 start and play the most on the road in a big game. Especially vs a team known for extremely hit starts and you know you can’t get behind double digits early (which mick specifically said this week)

I’m not going to be surprised if mick makes a push to never play them again. After the jp stuff today, mick is going to want no part of the game.

I think mick wants out of this game because he gets killed every year. I like mick but he acts like a baby sometimes

I agree, there is zero doubt that JJ’s size is a problem. I think you have to be a dangerous shooter to play major ball at that size. Unfortunately, JJ is not lights out. I do think that he is the better ball handler and passer, but if the surrounding cast is timid you have to play Broome.

I think Broome and JJ’s playing time should and will be dictated by our wings aggressiveness.

They weren't even guarding Jenifer. They wanted him to shoot. Totally agree!

Xavier people have no room to be upset. Mecura acts like an idiot. He deserves whatever he gets. If he wants to act like that, fine. But he needs to deal with it if not everyone wants to just take his crap.

This is the stuff I was talking about where macura just takes it too far and it’s embarrasing for a coach to support it.

What does really close to 2-2 mean? He missed his first shot

I'm for Broome playing as much as possible. Him having a big game helps us immensely. Just saying it could've been a whole different game if Jenifer got those good looks to drop early. I didn't think he played too bad overall. The more of a 24/16 split it is in Broome's favor the better I think we'll be in the long run though. Broome playing 2 for a few minutes is good too, so maybe 22/18 at PG and 4 min for Broome off the ball.

Against the best teams, I would rather move Jacob to the point and use Jenifer less in those games. Going to be hard for him to play against Florida, UCLA, Wichita, etc.,

I don't know if it's been said, but maybe the Cats getting the crap kicked out of them on the boards had something to do with the loss.

As I said before, & I know there are those who have legitimate reasons to disagree, but I still feel that X was better prepared by playing big boy teams while we were playing little boy teams....maybe that's why they out-toughed UC on the boards

This is too far of a reaction. He can play his back up role just fine.

Want and desire have nothing to do with who you’ve played in previous games. We just didn’t match their effort and intensity. But that is a day to day issue, has nothing to do with what you’ve done in the past.

Jenifer is not only small, but also not very quick for his size. He's a nice support piece, but definitely not a starter for a Top 25 program. His role should be to give Cane a breather, not turn the ball over while doing so, hit an occasional three and distribute to his teammates.....and hopefully play solid defense....a spark off the bench!

Until Broome shows he can take care of the ball and not make careless mistakes from being selfish I have no problem with Jenifer starting. Our best players are Clark, Cumberland and Evans and it's not close. Give me a guy that can maximize getting them the ball. Also Washington can be a prolific scorer in the right game. Broome is a better offensive player, better at taking the defense on one on two or three. Great, that's not team ball and leads to sloppy basketball as he has demonstrated some this year. Defensively they're both good and crafty in the press. One on one their both quick, strength goes to jenifer. But in the half court their defense is a wash. People get too hung up on a players isolated offensive abilities. This is a five on five game with zone defenses and double teams, etc. A player like Broome can be nullified easily, especially being a smaller player. Lance was the best individual offensive talent by far we've had and he was nullified in college ball and his team didn't make the tournament with UC's third leading scorer on it. Why is that? Selfish basketball doesn't win in college. Look at St. Johns under Lavin. They had numerous five star talents every year and were a .500 team. Why? Selfish play, not team ball.

It's really simple. You get the ball with a chance to score then you opponent does. You get one shot. Your job is to get the best shot possible. People are Broome over Jenifer are missing the point. We have four capable scorers to get good shots. Sure the pg is going to need to factor in and take and make and create shots. But bottom line, who runs a better offense, who puts his teammates in a better position to get that one best shot among five players on the floor? Thus far Jenifer has done that. When Broome or Jenifer shoots that means, Clark, Cumberland, Evans and Washington arent. He's not getting extra possessions or extra shots for the team. So yeah he might take more shots and score more, but is he taking better shots away from an Evans or a Clark? When he makes a lazy pass or over penetrates and doesn't pass the ball and causes a turnover, does his 2-3 or even 5 or 6 extra points make up for that when Jenifer is putting the shots in better players hands and not turning it over as much? I say no and thus far so has Mick. And he knows a ton more about basketball than anyone on this board.

With that said, sure Cane Broome is the better talent and sure we'll be better off if he can get his stuff together and run this team the right way. But don't be fooled into thinking he's that player right now. Mick is doing the right thing and not rewarding him simply for having more talent.
