If you're really good, it shouldn't matter! Matchups play a part, I agree. But if you are really good, and well coached, you are able to adjust. From what I have seen thru the Huggins/Cronin era is that UC has as good as, or better, athletes than most teams, but overall basketball talent and shooting lack. Oh yes, they have had some good shooters, but only one on a team. They don't recruit shooters, they recruit athletes who can jump and dunk. The name of the game is putting the ball in the basket--Xavier can--UC not so much!!

match ups most definitely matter. look at our sweet 16 run. we got 2 great match ups for us, FSU was supposed to be great that year and a hot team everybody liked. but we matched up great with them.

now if we want to argue we need to stop being 6, 7, 8 seeds and so on so we aren't forced to play those teams early, well then i'll completely agree with that. we need to win these next 3 games to make a statement to the committee.

I don't know if this has been mentioned but it was only a couple of weeks ago that pro golfer Steve Stricker lambasted X and Mack after their game at the Kohl Center. It is not just UC that has a problem with X's antics. It seems like they don't know how to be humble in victory but instead turn into cocky, mouthy, A**holes.

Watch the game, the student section was on Macura the whole game. They were chanting cuss words so loud the color guys even said they should settle down on TV. Mack let Macura do that arm thing because it was their own student section's motion to opposing players. He then subbed out Marcura and told his team to quiet down.

Good lord, I spend time watching UC during the year. Try doing the same before mouthing off some uninformed takes.

This is very true. X played Maryland (Vegas had it close and in X's favor), FSU, Arizona, and Gonzaga. X was better than Maryland, but FSU played right into the zone we ran last year. FSU had athletes and few shooters. Bacon got cold and it was a blowout. Same with Arizona, Trier was it for them and he never got hot from 3. Matchups make a huge difference if a team plays right into what you want to do.

waite you've always been a top notch poster and probably the most respected person on here. you've been there through all the ups and downs of this place.
Thank you! I love the Cats and most who post here feel the same way. The mod's do a very nice job seeing we all get along and have some place to discuss the team.

How would UC do (match up, that is) against the following: Duke, Kansas, Michigan State, Villanova, North Carolina? Who would they beat because they match up well with them?

we have been quiet unfortunate to draw teams that going into the game were very bad match ups for us a number of years in a row.

im also not buying the styles and substitution pattern stuff. we have always been a slow it down team against anybody that doesn't allow you to run up and down the court all game. that is micks style, he was like that at murray state too.

Come on! Everybody plays match-up nightmares. The good coaches and programs fight thru them "most of the time". The top programs would do cartwheels if they could face Harvard, St. Joes, and Creighton in the first round. We lose to them and blame it on our unlucky match-up theory. You can't blame 12 years of poor postseason performance on just bad match-up luck! His overall postseason record (league tourney & NCAA) is 15-19 since he has been coach (6-10 the last 5 years....only a 37% win percentage from a team with a combined 125-47 over that period). I don't believe we're won a single league tourney under his watch. That's more than match-up luck. That's a pitifully poor record during crunch time of the season. Throw in the record against Xavier, and the handful of other top teams we've played thru his tenure, and it's not very good. I'm not buying the match-up theory.

We were down 21-5 before we could blink an eye against X. That's a team that is not ready to play. The 11th ranked team in the nation should be better than that. I reallllly hope that the game with Florida proves this game to be a fluke!

yes at some point they do. in the early rounds we could have faced a number of teams better than who we played, but the match up would have been better. there are specific styles of offense that gives our brand of defense fits, we sure do get matched up with them a very high % of the time in the tournament.

at the end of the day you'd still like to see us win more than we have. but i'd also like to see us face teams that aren't under seeded too. the tournament is a whole mix of stuff going on with a large amount based on match ups and luck. thats what the tournament is.

i mean last year alone either team we would have faced in the 1st round was under seeded, we got kstate which was a great match up for us and a very comfortable victory. however if kstate would have lost to wake forest, all the sudden the match up is likely bad and who knows what happens.

none of those likely. top 10 kenpom teams we likely match up with decently are virginia, wichita state and purdue.

Even if we got bad matchups in the past we simply didn't have the play makers. We had a good season in SK's senior year when he was the ONLY player on the roster who could make a play. That is how important it is. Rubles was 3rd in scoring at under 8 ppg that year but we did get to the top 10 I think at one point. We just didn't have fire power.

If Cane can play like he did...we are one step closer because we have 4 other players who can score. Just think about adding SK to a team like this. I am not saying Cane is SK but if he can create shots when we need them and has the confidence it's going to go a long way.

With the low post game we have, and the shooting we have, and the D we have...if we can add some driving and creating to that list...it reduces the bad matchup potential.

If you can't get it to the post because they are denying it. If you can't shoot 3's because passing around the perimeter is not a game plan. Then you better have a player or two who can take things into their own hands and get some decent shots off or make some good passes.

So what if the student section was yelling at Macura. Mack claims to preach to ignore it and move on. Mack took Macura out and then told his team to quiet down. How do you know this? It just seems X players like to gloat, taunt and stir the pot when they win and not just with UC. It is like they have Andy MacWilliams syndrome.

I remember a few years ago when the shootout was at 5/3 in 2015 and it was a close game. X was up 57-56 in the final second and UC tried a 3 pointer and missed. Myles Davis (the man that had his woman get a restraining order against him) grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He promptly started to pound the basketball and walk towards the crowd and taunt for a few seconds.

I think the amount of x players that have had off court problems speaks volumes about the character of the type of guys mack recruits or the class he demands. But they win. ..

Please, I seem to remember Martin's flex to the X student section at the Cintas. Yes he let Macura go, subbed him out, and said quiet to his team on the court. I saw it all on TV, it was clear and up close camera work. Hey, you never watch so how would you know one way or the other.

I do watch some X games but not all because I am a fan of college
basketball.

Here is an interview that Matt Painter from Purdue Gave Dan Dakich

Purdue coach Matt Painter was on the Dan Dakich Show (ESPN 1070, Indy) Tuesday. (in 2011)
Painter discussed the UC-XU brawl, the officiating, XU players and Purdue's game vs Xavier

On the Shootout and playing Xavier earlier this year:
"If you watched our game with Xavier it happened all the time (trash talking), and it continued to happened. And in neither game did they (officials) get control of the game."

On his frustration with Xavier:
Right away, from watching film, they (XU) talk. They talk a lot. It was one of the first thing we talked about in our scouting report, was tell our guys 'don't get caught up".
When we got into the game, the same thing happened. I'm talking to the officials about things happening in the game, about timeouts and their guys were hitting our players coming off the timeouts, and they are looking at me like I was crazy. If you watch the film it happened, it's easy to see and the refs just ignored it. To me it could have been handled. If it was handled in our game, it doesn't happen in the UC game."

Glad you could drum up an example from almost 20 years ago under a different coach.

I will admit that during the Huggins years, especially the earlier years, that our players could be chirpy and mouthy. They tried to create the "Bad Boys" Detroit Pistons vibe. But X's problem seems to be their current coach.

Lives in Arizona, but knows literally every single thing going on two thousand miles away. Classic.

Thank you for this, goes to show it's not just frustration on our part. While Xavier beat us either way, they're still a garbage program at the moment. I don't mean record or winning wise, but the type of players they have. Whether our kids our going to be great or not there isn't a single guy with bad character on our team and personally, i love that. I love havin players that I can be proud of on and off the court. That being said we still gotta win, got a good chance to save face against Florida Saturday. Wouldn't call it a must win, but I think seeding wise it's as important as it gets.
