How much time/resources would you like them to invest on Nike kids that aren't coming to UC no matter how hard they recruit them???
Why would they not come here no matter how hard we recruit them? That makes no sense at all. We are a power house program in basketball not a mid major. We are getting a 70 million dollar renovation on our arena....Our coaches aren't selling Cincinnati as the destination it actually is or something.

It actually makes complete sense. You cant recruit someone with no interest. Its the easiest thing to understand and chad and others have made that clear multiple times only for people to come back and say how the staff is doing nothing, while only 1 person on this board actually talks to mick.

Also. just because a list comes out and doesnt show Cincinnati, doesnt mean the staff didnt watch, check in, and speak to the recruit who then said I have no interest. There is nothing to report there, doesnt mean the staff isnt doing anything like some insists

You clearly missed the most important word in what I said...

They have tried to get seriously involved with Markell Johnson for 3 years. He has no interest. Not much else you can do...

What Nike? It's a Nike camp doesn't mean they have to be at a Nike school. Tons of kids go to Under Armour and Adidas camps that go to different affiliated schools.

They play for powerhouse Nike AAU programs. Are there exceptions where Nike kids go elsewhere? Sure, but they are just that. Exceptions, not the rule. Hell, UC had to fight off Nike influence for Cumberland from the day he committed to the day he signed, and he only played for a Nike program for 2 1/2 months. It has nothing to do with camps, and everything to do with the people of influence around each recruitment. If those people are Nike people, good luck getting involved if you are a UA school. Just how it goes these days...

I get that they have people influencing them and I mean if I was a recruit I would probably prefer to have Nike gear over any other company out. I guess I just think its crazy that something that little has so much to do with what school a kid goes to that they wouldn't even consider hearing what we had to say. Especially if we broke down how lucrative our contract is with UA compared to these other schools with baby deals with Nike. I think if stuff like that is holding us back we need to have sales training on methods and ways to rebuttal what these other teams and people are selling the recruits. To me just seems like we could be doing more. I honestly don't think it would be terrible to hire a firm to come in and help us create material and work on our sales and rebuttals of what we have to offer to these kids. We are missing the ball somewhere.

You think it is something little. It isn't. Nike and UA are spending millions on millions of dollars on grassroots basketball. The ROI is having the best players stay under your umbrella through college and hopefully beyond. Right now Nike has the juice and UA is enemy #1...

Mick Cronin has proven to be a mediocre recruiter now for
a decade. Excuses or not...
Totally agree. He has this new state of the art arena coming, very new and very nice practice facilities, killer weight room, one of the best on campus recs in the country, a pretty awesome campus that hard not to be impressed with if you get on it that gets awards all the time, a great city with tons to do ect....all along with 6 straight years of going to the NCAA Tournament. I'm tired of the excuses. Be a better salesman make these kids believe they are idiots if they don't come play for The University of Cincinnati.

Sounds like kids around Ohio don't grow up dreaming of playing for the Bearcats.

I can't help but feel like having someone like Kenyon Martin on the staff would boost our credibility with recruits.

THERE IS NO PLAYING TIME AVAILABLE.

No kid in his right mind is going to commit here banking on one of our players to get injured.

I would rather pocket the schollys for next year and get good players rather than get some scraps right now.

This reasoning is SO dumb in SO many ways.

#1 We always have injuries.
#2 We always have depth issues.
#3 We have 4 kids returning next year who got a good amount of playing time at this level and 1 who hasn't played in a game for over a year. The rest are unknowns.
#4 Returning kids PTs per Game last year (Troy 13, Gary 10.4, Evans 8.4, Kevin 6.1, Justin 2.4, Quadri 2.1) Thats a whole 42.4 pts from guys who have played at this level.
#5 Limiting your number of scholarships means limited number of quality guys competing in practice every day. Wouldn't you rather have someone who was solid on a lower level D1 team competing against our guys making them better day in and day out rather than Zack Tobler?
#4 Grad transfers are more likely transfer from their school bc they have never, or never will get a chance to go to the tournament. Guess what we are almost a lock every year going to the tournament we are one of less than like 10 teams in the country who have went the last 6 years in a row!
#5 What does wasting 2 scholarships and pocketing them do for us?? Save us 20K on paying for a couple kids schooling? Thank goodness for that. (Sarcasm)
#6 How many times do we talk about how rankings mean so little? Usually we know the top 25 are solid very high level players the rest gets shaky after that. There are kids out there that can play at our level they just need the chance. Some of these kids could be great role players who are grad transfers that could help even if it was just in practice as better competition or to come in and be a extra body that just wants to be a part of what we are doing here.
#7 Get out of the ignorant mindset we have to have a premier top level kid prime time recruit for it to help us in any way filling these 2 spots. You need to look at the bigger picture.
#8 Pocketing scholarships is stupid when you can get a body (even if a mid to high level grad transfer player) in here for a year and still have the scholarship open next year to use just like if no one used it.
#9 If you have ever coached you would know how huge it is to have a couple kids on the team who may not be the best athletes in the world or the tallest or jump the highest ect but just have basketball IQ through the roof. Get a kid who does the little things moves without the ball, cuts, knocks down open shots, makes good decisions, simple passes, just works hard. It is contagious.

Stop with the pocketing scholarships bull crap and stop with finding the "right" player crap. At this point find some roll player kids who have played D1 ball who do all of the little things and are hard workers that want to have a chance at going to the tournament and being a part of what we do here. They might end up surprising someone and being huge for us with an opportunity.

I cant say it enough pocketing scholarships gives us NO chance of having any contribution whatsoever from a diamond in the rough guy who gets an opportunity and has experience playing the game.
