2016 General Recruiting

We were back to under 55 ppg in regulation in the 3 postseason games.

Gotta scrap the zone. It may help us win a 50 point rock fight against a USF type team in January (!!!), but we lose in the long run. No players with real NBA aspirations want to play zone. Lol it just reminds me of playing zone in 3rd grade and having the coaches yell to keep our hands up (I know, I know, UC's zone is more complex).

I'm okay with using it occasionally, but we should play man 80% of the time. Of course, at that point, it can be argued the time spent practicing the zone could be best used working on other things.

Louisville and Syracuse seem to have no problem recruiting to a zone. Duke played a zone most of the NCAA tournament too. It's not the zone that his holding back recruiting.

The zone hasn't held back recruiting, I agree. At least not yet. I just hope it was a 1 year thing as our defensuve identity. Duke and Louisville aren't known primarily as zone teams. And those teams and Syracuse are consistently playing in marquee matchups bc of that conference, so they get more exposure. No one should have to watch us zone Tulane to death. I don't think that does anything to help our brand. Jmo.

It's the same zone Pitino plays. He doesn't struggle with recruiting.

I'd guess there would be more man next year, but I think the zone will still be there a decent amount to keep Ellis and Clark close to the basket, where they protect the rim incredibly well.

I agree that we need the zone as a wrinkle/change of pace/matchup dependent option.

I don't think Mick got this year's version of the zone from Pitino. I'll try to look it up, or maybe someone else knows, but I think it was run by a coach from a smaller school and Mick talked to him about it last offseason.

I don't think of Duke or Louisville and think zone defense. That's my opinion. I think of Louisville as a pressure team.

Then you don't watch Louisville or know what you are watching when you do. Don't know any other way to put it than that.

It is the same defense UL uses. Designed by a former Pitino assistant...

Ok thanks.

I definitely think it can be useful, just not all the time. I can't argue that it wasn't effective last year. If we played a Louisville or Syracuse type team, I'd definitely use the zone. But we just don't see teams with our kind of athleticism very often.

Anyone have an idea which big guys we'll go after the hardest now that Ward is off the table? Boyd or Banks maybe? That DeLaurier guy is listed at 205, so I'm not so sure he can be a 5.

Unfortunately UC has many things going against them. They are fighting against schools in better conferences and with much higher recruiting budgets. On top of that we have a severely outdated 5/3 arena and locker rooms. Unfortunately they only really have one good recruiter outside of Mick and that's Larry Davis. Savino and Jackson haven't proven to be great and aren't able to sell our program as well as a young charismatic assistant coach would likely be able to. I love Mick's loyalty to his coaches, but sometimes I wish he had Tubs philosophy on coaches and recruiting.

Why does every post on every thread have to go down this path? This is a thread on 2016 recruiting and not the status of the program.
