fifth third renovation

Help Support BearcatTalk:

This debate has gone on too long without anyone addressing the real issue at hand -- MONEY for a new arena. There's not a fan around or anyone with ties to UC that doesn't want a new arena or know that we need a new arena because 5/3rd doesn't cut it. Fans don't want to come there and it doesn't help in recruiting (although I think some people overemphasize its importance in that regard). Bottom line is until Ono/Bohn find some serious donors to fund this project it won't happen. It is a priority for the university it just as of now isn't feasible. For any fan that stays away from games because of the arena you are part of problem. We can say it's the chicken and the egg but in our case if we want a nice chicken we need someone to lay some golden eggs. A new arena will not be built without fan support and the money that comes with it. UC can win and has won at the Shoe. Cronin's recruiting classes have gotten progressively better because winning has increased. 5/3rd can get loud and be a great atmosphere for our boys to play in. As fans we need to suck it up and go to games to make this happen and clamor and demand for a new arena. With that support the university can move forward with a project.

Finishing the season with 3 straight sellouts is a start. I really hope this team can make it to the second weekend to keep the buzz of this team and program going forward.

“Hopefully that happens someday, but like I said, President Ono is my guy. He loves sports. He cares about our arena situation. We talk a lot lately because I have no athletic director.”Mike Bohn, who was hired to replace Whit Babcock after Babcock left for Virginia Tech, is scheduled to begin work at UC on Monday."

“I appreciate how much he’s reached out,” Cronin said of Ono. “We’ve talked a lot about basketball, probably more than he really should. He’s running a major Research I institution. But he cares, so that’s exciting for me. Everything that needs to happen here is going to happen and I’m pretty confident in that."- Mick Cronin

That sounds promising.....

And may I add more to the above comment from Mick. He went on to say that if and when the extension of his contract is available to sign he will be grateful for everything givin. However, he went on to say that his contract is not what he's worried about or frets over. He mentioned the "arena situation" as his top priority going forward. I only say this because for whatever reason quite a few people on this board maybe don't see it that way. Mick has now mentioned this 3 times publicly that I'm aware of. I'm of the belief that it will be dealt with and something concrete could be coming of this in the near future.

Nothing really new there. Credibility doesn't matter so much on this one since everyone knows Mick's been throwing that idea around, so it isn't too difficult for the rumor mill to spool that up every now and again.

He tweeted this:

Matt Opper ‏@downthedrive 3h
@UTPbrandon very extensive [of a renovation] if what we have heard is correct

No clue what he means by "what we have heard," unless they have actual sources, but I'm not putting any stock into it.

Matt doesn't typically just make stuff up so someone is telling him this, the question is who...

Yup, Matt is as much a fan of UC as the rest of us and wouldn't just make stuff up unless he actually believed it. He could be mislead, but theres very little chance hes fabricating information.

Pretty sure Matt is reading another board for his information. A lot of it sounds very familiar.

If he is just taking that info from the 247 board, then shame on him. At least cite your sources so we can all see that they aren't very credible.

That's where he is getting it. And the info is coming from a bunch of different people.

By the way, there is far more credible info at 247 than any other Bearcat Board I read.

I think the writing is on the wall that US Bank Arena is going to get renovated soon, and I think there is a good chance UC could become a tenant without having to put any money down.

Now the issue becomes, will the renovations make it a "basketball first" arena to cater to UC or will it remain as a hockey style arena...
