From College Sports Spotlight in Thursday’s paper:
University of Cincinnati center Kelvin Gaines, who was redshirted last year, is expected to make an impact on the Bearcats’ front line this season.
Gaines, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound freshman, is known for his shot blocking ability and his physical presence, but his offensive skills were raw last year.
“When you redshirt, sometimes you become a forgotten man,” said UC coach Mick Cronin. “I didn’t know how long it was going to take for him to help us. But after the summer that he’s had and going through fall workouts, I’m optimistic that he’s going to be able to help our team. He’s a high-level athlete and he is as physical as you can be. His offense is coming around.”
