Lets calm down a little on Morman. He was 3-4 from the field last night, but he has not shown the ability to knock down open shots. His .354 FG % is the 2nd lowest on the team, only ahead of Cobb (another guy this board jumped all over after a couple hot games).
When you play 8-10 minutes a game what kind of flow do you think you'd be in?

Just no. The system is there for a reason. You can say Shaq and Sanders give nothing, but it's not true. At the very least Shaq gives you rebounds. Morman had 0 in 18 minutes. Can't happen for a SF.
When you have a Starting 3 man Avg. 6 points 3 rebounds a game and has a 4/1Turnover/Assist Ratio, What rational would there be to keep playing him?

At least he attacks the basket and gets to the free throw line. He has to learn when to shoot. Had 3 wide open looks last night and knocked them down. With his minutes being so limited I dont think those stats give you a very good picture of what he could actually be. Also there is no need to calm down when nobody is revved up. It's just a suggestion that I think could be good for KJ and the team based on Morman's limited exposure and KJ's consistent lack of production.

nobody else is better? Morman actually has a higher TO rate than Shaq, as hard as that is to believe (although its 25 % for Morman and 24.9% for Shaq).

I would absolutely love it if anybody stepping up and proved to be the guy at the 2 or 3 spot. It would be fantastic for this year, but nobody has done it yet. Morman had an improved game last night, that is wonderful and I'll be thrilled if he keeps it up.

I'd try a starting 5 of Caupain, Johnson, Cobb, Ellis, and Clark. At this point is worth a shot. You get nothing out of Shaq or Sanders. Bring Morman, Shaq, and Sanders off the bench when needed. I'd probably bring Morman first since he is young and could use the experience. You know what you are getting (nothing) with the other two.

I brought it up in an earlier thread and it is worth repeating. The 2-3 spot is in shambles. Is there a Starting 3 man in the nation Avg. less than Shaq's 6 points per game? Is there a Starting 2 guard in the nation Avg. less than KJ's 5 points? The program has to figure out how to implement a better player in these positions. Mormon is a start. People either love or hate him. I love what he brings. His attitude alone is reason enough to get him on the floor 25 minutes a game between the 2-3. His aggressiveness is evident in his free throw attempts. He avg. nearly 9 attempts per 40 minutes of play. Phenomenal for a Freshman. It's all about production and it's time for this kid to be getting more than his 10 minutes a game.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Mormon is a raw product but has more upside than KJ or ST at this point. Plus, he's one of the few players I see on the court with an ounce of fire in his belly.

1. This roster is not talented enough to go ten deep against top 100 RPI teams. You need to widdle the rotation down to eight. One sub at the 4/5, one sub at the 3, and one sub at the 1/2.

2. Clearly, Clark, Ellis, and Caupain are the best three players on the team. They need 30+ minutes each game.

3. DeBerry is the obvious back-up at the 4/5. Moore shows promise, especially on offense. But, he's not ready and should have redshirted.

4. At the three, out of the candidates, I like Sanders to receive the bulk of minutes. First, he's efficient on offense. His usage rate is low, but that just means he understands his role. He's third on the team in effective field goal percentage. More importantly, he does not turn the ball over. The problem with Shaq is that he gets his points from the inside just like the bigs. Teams respect Sanders outside shot and thus you get better spacing for the bigs when he is on the floor. Backup here is Shaq.

5. At guard, Cobb needs to play with Caupain. With Cobb, again, you need to look at effective field goal percentage since he shoots a lot of threes. Also, Cobb does not turn the ball over. Backup is Morman based on results to-date.

In summary, replace a lot of the Shaq/KJ minutes with more Sanders/Cobb. Increase three-point shooting to complement the bigs and Troy. More efficiency. Less turnovers.

With Thomas and Sanders giving us nothing, I wouldn't mind seeing much more of a 3 guard line up with Caupain, Johnson/Cobb and Morman.

As of a couple of games ago Cobb was the 4th most effective player on our team (in terms of +/- pts)...and that was in spite of having to spend a lot of his minutes NOT playing with the 3 most effective guys on our team. Who else are you going to jump on board with?

Morman and Shaq may have some things each do better than the other but I have seen 3 years from one of them and not enough minutes from the other. You have mentioned rebounding and FG%. I can bring up passing, FT's, confidence, emotion, defense etc. I would like to see what Morman can do with the starters on the court...as well as Cobb. Thomas and KJ have been playing with Caupain, Ellis, and Clark a lot more minutes. These players are making those around them better...and Thomas and KJ still don't look good.

Cobb and Morman get a lot more of their minutes with our most effective players on the bench. Just look at the +/- stats I posted earlier. Look at how good the numbers look for those guys who are starting the game compared to those who don't. If you put Cobb and Morman in place of KJ and Shaq (playing with starters)...I guarantee their overall numbers will be better...or more efficient.

I've said on this board multiple times that Cobb should play more and should be in the lineup of the best 5 players.

With that being said he's incredibly inconsistent and this board hasn't talked about him being a starter now (since this week, cause ya know, he struggled in 2 games).

My point wasn't to discredit Morman or Cobb. It was that everybody has a good game at some point, but we can't say give all the minutes at position x to play y because they had an ok game.

You can count on 3 players. The rest depends on whoever shows up that day (if anybody else). End of story.

Cobb is inconsistent but he also has the ability to contribute. That is the difference. On the days he give you nothing, it's still even with what Shaq and Sanders give you. Plus, Cobb seems to play with the subs more often and has always come off the bench. I'd love to see what he can do while not having to come off the bench and while playing with the other 4 best players. He may very well play/shoot more consistently if he starts the game.

No argument from me. As I've said in each of the past 2 game threads, we've played our best 5 together what, 5 minutes out of the last 80? I don't get it.

I'd prefer Moore as the backup at the 4 and 5. Just play man when he is in and stick him on the most inept/slowest player out there. Can't hide him in a zone bc he's either too slow to cover the corner or too slow to rotate from the middle to the block. DeBerry has not been a good rebounder at all. I personally don't want it to ever be both him and Ellis out there together. And Clark or Ellis has to be on the floor.
I also think Sanders should virtually be cut out of the regular rotation in big games. I have him at 3rd string SF only.

I don't think Cobb should start. Never really have. And I have been asking for Moirman to start since before the ECU game. It isn't about just one random good game for Morman. I think it is more about the energy he brings and his willingness to attack a defense.

I am still sick over last night. Just laid an absolute egg in a really important game. I have no idea if lineup changes would make a difference or not. I like the idea of Morman cracking the lineup but I'd rather him take KJ's minutes than Shaq's. Morman has shown the ability to knock down an open shot and plays just as good as defense as KJ. KJ just isnt getting it done in the role he is in. I think the change for him could be good. However any change in lineup is meaningless until they stop turning the ball over. Specifically the bigs. They are the strength of our team and they are not even giving themselves a chance to put the ball in the hole. 20 turnovers on the road or at home and you are not gonna win. It's been a problem all year and I'm not sure how it gets fixed.

One thing I noticed with the bigs was hesitation in putting up the shot. I remember Deberry had a perfect entry pass. Easy basket if he went up quickly, but he dribbled, the defense collapsed and he lost it. Cannot happen at this level.

As for the guards, lazy passes are a big part of it but not all. I feel like our program has always taken pride in taking care of the ball, except this year. It sure is frustrating to watch.

Thing you gotta remember with DeBerry is if he had this giant body and the motor to back it up and truly dominate consistently (the way we've seen him in spurts and flashes) he'd probably have been recruited to <not UC> years ago. Sad but true state of recruiting affairs
