Memphis 1/15

BearcatTalk

Help Support BearcatTalk:

Tonight they turned it over on 33.4% of possessions and most of it is coming from the front court guys (Ellis, DeBerry and Moore had 3 TO's each).

They played tonight like they were scared to death of Austin Nichols. That's not a typo. Austin Nichols.

To clarify: Austin Nichols is a good player. But our bigs should've more than held their own.

Len Elmore (astute as always) brought up a point that's worth debating: do the Bearcats do themselves a disservice with their lack of shot volume? Are they wasting too much time trying to get the perfect shot, passing up good shots in the process? Does this approach make our players more tentative, and consequently more turnover prone?

All I know is that it would be nice to see the team play loose and let the shots fly on the offensive end. 20 turnovers, 18 field goals. Wow.

Yes, I can tell what kind of offensive night this team will have based on their first few possessions. Against NC State came out loose shooting early an confident, tonight we waited until about 5 seconds to actually take a step towards the basket.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like every time Troy Caupain slowly walks the ball into the half court we end up taking a really bad shot at the end of the clock. Bring the damn ball up the court like you intend to attack somebody, otherwise it's time wasted which is the last thing this team needs on offense.

I agree wholeheartedly

It's not just you.

I wish they'd practice halfcourt offense with a 24 second shot clock.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned our long time problem of over-helping on defense. You would think after a team drills 5 or 6 wide open threes out of the corner while you're helping inside, that you would stop helping off and stay on your man. It happened over and over against VCU, and it's happened many time thru the years under Mick as well. Those uncontested threes set the tone in the first half and had us playing from behind the rest of the night.

I agree with whoever was saying we gotta get back to what wins us games. Toughness. We can't be above the little things once we start to have some success. We got destroyed tonight. I really thought the tough UConn loss would be enough to kick start a nice run of games for us. But apparently, what we actually needed was a butt kicking against a bad team. Time to wake up. Temple is coming and they're no joke.

I agree. And the book is out on Ellis. Just wait or make the extra pass bc he is coming on a tear from the weakside to try to make the best block of all time, 100% of the time. Mick talked about it on the radio show. Just stay home and play straight up defense. Good defenders know how to pick their spots. He has to know we'd rather have him rebound than go for a block on most occasions.

It has happened almost every year. At some point there is a 2-3 game stretch where the team forgets what it does best and takes a few losses...it is funny how during one of those stretches all the Mick haters come out of the woodwork and rehash the same old topics ("the team is boring" "they won't even make the tournament" "Mick can't recruit" "Why can't he recruit a shooter?!?!?"). Some how some way they continue to make the NCAA tournament. One of 16 programs to make 4 straight appearances!

Going in to this season everyone was in agreement that this team would be up and down this year. Well the ups were NC State and SMU, and downs are Nebraska and Memphis.

I'm officially ready for Morman to get more time at the 2 AND 3. He's a GREAT defender, a pretty good passer, he's confident, aggressive, and has heart, pride, energy. He's a throw back BEARCAT!

This team SORELY needs a guy like that on the court to get them (keep them) fired up. He fires me up as a fan!

I know UC fans are usually downers but come on man!!! Before this game Cincinnati was projected as a 7 seed in the NCAA tournament. They are still in fine shape to get an at-large bid simply by winning at home and not losing to the bottom of the league (Houston, ECU, UCF and Tulane) on the road. Cincinnati has 3 top 50 RPI wins: SMU (13), SDSU (26) and NC State (45). Even with the loss, per Live-RPI, UC only dropped to 39. Yes this is a BAD loss but don't get crazy man!

This is far from an overreaction. I don't care about what the RPI currently is c and though it's used by the committee its only one piece. UC has one decent road win and that is it (and no top 25 wins and no foreseeable opportunities for them either). Fortunately they don't have any bad losses right now though Memphis may end up being one. They are running out of chances for good wins and right now their body of work is not impressive. Saying that UC is running out of chances is far from a stretch.

This team is boring to watch and the recruiting has been terrible. That has been said both in good games and in bad games. I wouldn't call that Mick Haters but when you have nothing else to go with I guess that's your fall back.

ps - I'm certainly not upset that we've made 4 straight appearances, but at what point does consistently finishing among the top 68 teams in the country become such an achievement?

He is a good ball defender but several times he left his man to help and the result was an open 3.
