New Arena

When UC played Xavier this year at US Bank they drew 10,250. On the exact same night Kansas played New Mexico in downtown KC and drew 18,493.

Kansas Jayhawks basketball is on a completely different level than UC and Xavier. That doesn't have much to do with the city IMO.

Ok youre right. The fact that they constantly put 18K+ in a new arena for basketball means nothing. It means much more for Cincinnati's case that they put half the people in a dumpy old atena on the exact same night. Jesus. You guys need to get out of Cincinnati more. This thread is embarrassing.

What level is Kansas State on? Bc they drew 16,685 and 16,303 last 2 games at Sprint Center in non rivalry games and their campus is 2 hours away...still not good enough? Is Cincinnati's new NBA team going to double the UC/Xavier crowd 50 times per year? At twice the price? Lol.

Calm down there, buddy. If you think we're absolutely delusional for thinking a city that already has a pro baseball and pro football team could handle a pro basketball team, then I think you're being a bit harsh. Disagree all you want, but I think this is a pretty fair debate. I do think KC would probably be a better town for an NBA team, but I also don't think it would fail in Cincy. That's not that absurd.

This is about showing you can put up the numbers. There are steps you gotta take before you would even get considered for a new pro franchise. New arena is obviously #1. Showing your city can afford to sit on an empty arena with no home team for years may be required just bc the NBA and NHL are basically at capacity and not actively seeking out expansion. You also have to have concerts, college games, conference tournaments, NBA/NHL exhibition games. And you have to be able to sell them out. Kansas City has done all of these things for almost 10 years. They are on the list. Cincinnati has done none of them. Haven't even broken ground for a new arena yet, nor has it shown the ability to put up #s in the arena it does have. As far as the list goes for Cincinnati, not even on it.

Sorry to be harsh. This push back is just mindblowing. I think itd be best if I just avoid this thread from here on out.

Some cities are pipe dreams and some are real possibilities. The NBA doesnt necessarily have to expand, but I wouldnt be surprised to see a couple city switches in the next 10 years. I'd agree Seattle is first. I wont argue that. They have had an arena proposal in the works for 3 years. But KC has had NBA exhibition games every year, Big 12 Tournament every other year, and NCAA tournament games. The 19,000 seat arena is new and sitting right there. They have pursued the Hornets and 2 NHL teams. I have lived in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Chicago...believe me when I tell you, Kansas City could handle a 3rd pro team and Cincinnati could not.

I think you highlighted where Cincy tends to falls short. Our City leadership is usually reactive rather than proactive.

So I saw X is planning on doing some minor renovations to the Cintas center. What is it, 15 years old? We need to announce something soon.

If 5/3 gets renovated and reduced to 10,000 capacity, does that mean we will most likely play at US Bank for a year while the renovations occur? Could it be like us playing at PBS for a year in football? I haven't heard much on this topic recently, just curious what others who know more than I do think.

That's certainly a big possibility. That's the last i heard though as well, that they're being pitched a pretty much brand new 10k on-campus arena. I'm just curious if they're only being public about it to scare US Bank Arena that they're not afraid to do that, since the US Bank owners are offering so little money to make it happen.

I think at this point, the on-campus arena is the most likely scenario. It doesn't seem like they're getting anywhere with US Bank. Regardless, it's probably all a good 3-5 years away before they even start renovating.

They will begin renovating sooner than 3-5 years. Probably 2016. This is now the top priority of the athletic department.

The owners of US Bank seem to be looking for a free upgrade. They think the city wants an arena bad enough that the city will take the bill for them. Based on how stubborn the owners and the city seem, I don't think this gets done for a long time.

Too bad the city is wasting money on the trolley folly instead of putting it towards something productive, like making US Bank arena something closer to state of the art instead of being a dump like it is now.

But the City does not own US Bank. The owner is now pitching the old Public Private Partnership scam, where the taxpayers put up the money and the owner rakes in the profits. No thanks, let's go ahead with the 5/3 renovation.

Pretty much. I love how now that the Republican Convention passed on Cincy the owners of US Bank want to put focus on UC again as a main tenant. They treat UC like a sloppy second option. It is not beneficial for UC to play in that dump hole. Moving on...
