US Bank arena will never be "up to snuff" it's going to take a new downtown arena if this city wants to take the next step and pull conference and events like the GOP.

I totally agree, they need to tear US Bank down and start over if they want to attract more to Cincinnati. But they need a big time main team there full time to pull that off. What would that be besides the Bearcats?

If Cincinnati was smart, they look to the NBA and try to lure a team to Cincy with a brand new arena. The NBA is looking for a reason to put a team back in Seattle. Adding another team out east would allow them to do that. That would be the best situation and would allow the city to get a reasonable ROI on the new arena.

Agreed Jason, I think they would have a shot at an NHL team as well if they had the right facilities. It would bring a ton of revenue, from conferences, events, bigger name concerts, shows, the possibility of adding 2 more major sports teams. If you have the initial outlay in money, I believe you could recoup your investment over a reasonable time frame.

That would be great if they could get a commitment from the the NBA. When it comes to getting other events like concerts, conventions, NCAA tournament games, etc. I worry that the city waited too long. Outside of the GOP convention which had some strategic merit to be here, most events can already go to Columbus, Indy, L'ville, and Cleveland and still draw people from Cincy to travel there.

Louisville is way ahead of Cincinnati in the quest for an NBA team. There will be a preseason game between Miami and New Orleans there in October. Not to mention they've shown they can draw 22k for college basketball. It certainly worked out when they chose to move the Grizzlies from Vancouver to Memphis (another crazed basketball town).

True, but there were times where Fifth Third would have a sellout of 13+k the same night Xavier had a sellout of 10+k, making around 24,000 fans at a college basketball game in Cincinnati that night. If you have UC, Xavier, OSU, and UK fans in the Cincy/Lexington area all rooting for the same NBA team, that's a LOT of people.

I think Kansas City would be in the mix for NBA or NHL ahead of Cincinnati. They just built the Sprint Center downtown a few years ago and its pretty nice. I went to the Big 12 tournament a couple years ago. They were also trying to get either the Penguins or Coyotes when it opened.

For sure. Kansas City has been very vocal in trying to land a NBA or NHL team. Its the main purpose why they built that arena.

I disagree. I don't think Louisville is ahead of Cincinnati at all (assuming arena situation takes care of itself). We've had preseason NBA games at 5/3 before. The NBA does that all the time.

I believe the Enquirer conducted a poll years ago and there was little to no interest in bringing the NBA back. Also, just because you are a fan of college basketball doesn't necessarily mean you enjoy the NBA. I know a lot of die-hard college hoops fans that despise the NBA.

I'll agree with that. I absolutely love college hoops, and I don't much care for the NBA. But I think that's because Cincy doesn't have an NBA team. I think it'd be a lot different if we did.

UC gets under 8,000 fans most of the time...no way the city could/would support an NBA team for over 40 games per year. It just isn't realistic.

Fair point. The reasons that I get for not liking the NBA are often idiotic... like they don't play defense. I think many of the NBA haters are afraid to watch a game because they might actually like it.

UC fans only make up around 30-35% of our city's college fans. I'm not saying Cincy is at all the top city to need an NBA team, but to me it's silly to think the Reds and Bengals can have success, but an NBA team cannot.

Lol. I agree. The NBA is just such better quality. I watch 20x more NBA than college.

But do you think any of those fans would go from UC games to NBA instead? It is likely an either/or situation at best bc of how expensive that could be on the fans for NBA games.
Didnt the Reds lose money last year? And didnt the Bengals need 2 extra extensions to sell out the playoff game last year? I'm not asking those questions to be a wise guy, I have heard those thigs but haven't researched enough myself to say it with 100% certainty.

I get what you're saying about how it's different because it's all basketball. The Reds and Bengals did fine last year though. The Reds averaged 31,288 (15th of 30) and the Bengals sold out every home game. Yeah, they needed an extension to sell out the playoff game, but so did Indy and Green Bay. If Green Bay is having issues selling out, it's an NFL issue, not Cincy. Our city's fans aren't as bad as the reputation you hear from probably haters.

Good info, thanks

Incorrect. There has been a few Cavs games here in Cincinnati but not two non-local teams like Miami and New Orleans. You can't just assume the arena situation will be figured out, when there is a 22k seat court ready to go with legitimate fan support just 90 miles away. The investing group looking to bring a team to Louisville includes some investors from Cincinnati. That is telling.
