Titus Rubles

BTW, 15 of your 21 turnovers came from Rubles (8), Parker (4) and Cash (3).

And 7 of those on inbounds plays between Titus and Cash. I've never seen a team have that much trouble getting the ball in bounds. Is it so hard to go deep and get the ball in the back court if you're having that much trouble?

Exactly. But Mick wants him outside the 3 point line with the ball in his hands. Jackson sucks from out there too but Mick thinks he's Kevin Durant. Put the players in positions to succeed. None of these guys are good at taking their man one on one.
seems like a lot of stats research is being done since last night...i am curious to see what Rubles' shot percentage is in the low block?...i am thinking no more than 30%...he is not a big man...he does not want to play in the low block because in his mind, he is a 'wing'...he is the team's leading rebounder...so was i last week...when i played on my nephew's 4th grade team...it is telling to see he had 9 rebounds last night, 1 offensive...how can a guy grab 9 on one side of the ball and only 1 on the other?...because on defense, his man is forcing him to be down low...on offense, Rubles, like most others, gravitates away from the basket...

i also have to continue to agree with Hick's about Rubles' having an admirable skill set...he has no control of the ball, nor himself...his defense has gotten more solid as the year has gone on, but he still makes dumb fouls at times (maybe to fit in with the rest of the players)...he has shown time and time again, that he cannot finish...he cannot make up his mind when he drives, let alone finish (and he is definitely not alone...major team flaw)...and for a guy who is billed as being explosive, that part of his 'admirable skill set' has yet to be seen...how many dunks has Rubles put down (using dunks as an example of aggressiveness)...

Rubles led UC in assists and rebounds last night (and unfortunately turnovers). He had 4 assists. Cashmere, Parker, and SK combined for, wait for it.....2 assists.

Rubles is the most versatile player on the team, best passer and rebounder and can be a mismatch on the perimeter. He wasn't great last night, but I like his skill set and what he brings to the team. He plays hard, attacks the glass and is a good kid.

Agree completely re: Rubles.

Without Mbodj in there they were terrible. Sanders guarding Dieng? Behanan? Harrell? ha!

BTW - that was a terrible pass by Parker. Nyarsuk's hands are worse than bricks but no one knows how to throw a freaking pass. Parker rifles a ball at Nyarsuk from four feet away and expects him to catch it? He's 7'1" for christ sake, throw the ball up in the air. Unfortunately like you mention, bball IQ isn't something this team has.

At least he was trying to get the ball inside! Who else passes there?

Doesn't make it a good pass. He probably should have taken it himself, pulled up since he was only about 8 feet out, or lobbed the ball to the guy who is 7'1".

unfortunately, i think this teams deficiencies are masking Rubles' mediocrity this year (and hopefully he will blossom next year)...especially for a player with his body style, potential, and athleticism

Absolutely correct. Of anyone on this team, Rubles has the kind of attitude that Bearcat basketball is known for. It's an absolute shame that he has no shot. But, he plays with intensity and effort and we can only hope that he develops a shot over the next 8 months, or at least the ability to finish better at the basket. The guy can guard anyone from the point guard to the center and everyone in between. He has great ball skills for a big man, which is invaluable against a press. But most importantly, he's the best passer on a team that severely lacks that skill. No doubt he had a horrible game last night, but I look for him to be a huge player on this team next year. We shouldn't be too quick to run this guy out of town. If the rest of the team had any offensive skill, there would be less pressure on him to produce, and we would probably see him loosen up and be the great all-around player that Mick promised us he was early in the season.

i hate to really hate on Rubles, but it is comments like this, that i have been hearing/reading all year...great ball skills, for a big man...i am pretty sure i saw him dribble the ball off his own leg/shoe again last night...and his ball skills are average at best...and we cannot call him a big man...he plays outside the paint...and he is not a big man...he is a 4 at best, with a "wing" mentality...these are arguments i have been making all year...

I still don't know why they don't have Rubles cut into the paint about 5' to 8' from the basket and throw him the ball there and let him make a move. He can only drive to the bucket from the right side and teams know this. And he never seems to do anything with it. Get him closer to the basket, but maybe not right under it, and throw him the ball there.

They need to try something different. What they're doing isn't working.

that sounds like a solid idea...something needs to change because i really want this kid to play up to his potential...like the rest of the guys on the team, i would love to see what Rubles can do when he plays confidently...i have not/did not watch any videos of Rubles in JUCO, but i am guessing he was more confident then than now...i am probably the biggest critic of the kid, but i want nothing more than to see him flourish...Mick really needs to find a way to create lanes/backdoor cuts to give Rubles a chance to attack the rim without being over-crowded...the same would really help Shaq...these kids are reportedly high flyers, so lets make it happen...or at least attempt...

He is a big man. Mick just doesn't use him as one. He tries to do the same thing with JJ and did it last year at times as well. Just because they are "face up" 4's doesn't mean they are wing players.

Parker dribbles the ball of his feet and turns it over at least once a game. It happens about every time he tries to go left. Difference is Parker is a guard.

Rubles is the best passer on the team. He is also their best rebounder and a very good defender. In the right system he'd be pretty good. Relying on him to take his man off the dribble isn't maximizing his talents.

So you're saying Rubles is a big man that should be planted on the block and be asked to execute back to the basket moves? He's scared to take the ball up when he dribbles within six feet of the rim. This is why Lawrence is such a huge recruit because he's capable of doing the things that rubles and Jackson can't do on the offensive end.

is a horrible offensive basketball player. Absolutely horrible. 8 Turnovers tonight. On the season, he averages a turnover every 10 minutes. He shoots 33% from the field and 10% from 3.

I'm so sick of this f-ing guy.

He drives to the hoop with zero plan. 90% of the time, he either (a) turns the ball over, (b) gets called for charging, or (c) stops and turns around.

I hope Lawrence completely supplants him next year.

Are you people out of your minds?? Do you have any idea where we would be without this kid? Cheik and Dave down low? That's like two high school kids playing D1. Give Titus some credit. He's struggled to shoot but the kid plays his ass off and rebounds. This team is not real impressive. That said, Titus needs to play for us to compete. Please do not tell me you would rather Justin take his minutes. JJ has no idea how to play basketball.

He's not good. That said...this is why I come to this message board. Long Haul and others bring up some good points about Rubles. He is playing out of position. He should be more of a true PF and he does dribble too much, and Mick should not have him doing that. I'd like him working the paint a lot more and not roaming free around the perimeter. That's on Mick.

I truly think his passing is overrated but I have seen flashes....he's got a lot of assists but his turnovers are brutal. And I actually am excited to see what he can do next year with an entire offseason to sharpen his skills...shooting, dribbling, passing...I think we can get something out of him on O. This year though, I can't agree with you that we are better off because of him on offense. Just can't do it man.

^^^^^^^^^How I feel exactly, tons of potential, being played out of position, lots of dumb turnovers this year. After getting a good taste of D1 and a good off-season, he will be a factor next year.

The problem is Rubles has no natural finesse. You can teach him a lot of stuff on offense, but finesse is an innate characteristic. Your not going to teach him how to release like SK or Cash or Parker. You may be able to teach him how to make the layup on the front end of a fast break (which he can't do now). I think his biggest problem on offense is he's in too much of a hurry. Needs to slow down, assess the D he's playing against and react to it.

I think his shot can be improved to a certain extent, just not during the season. Offensively, he must take it all the way to the rim. Get a euro-step, pro-hop, etc. to help him finish strong drives to the hoop...

That's what I mean by his lack of finesse - he drives strongly but them slams the ball against the backboard such that there is no way it's going in. So much for all the bunny drills he's done since he was a kid.
