If xavier shoots this year like the past 2 years it isn't going to matter what defense we play. 21-33 from 3 the past 2 years combined. That is more than getting open looks, that is shooting out of their minds.

Way better chance of shooting like that vs zone. They had shots last year that I could've made (if Dee Davis could lol). I'll say this...IF we play zone, Mick better bail on it WAY faster than LD did last year.

Xavier is quite possibly deeper than us actually.

Not as far as big men are concerned. We have to force it down low and force their hand by getting Farr or Reynolds in foul trouble. Make them go small and keep feeding it down low all game. Then the threes will start to open up.

O'Mara has shown promise for them but I like our chances against him.

Dee Davis could be alone in a gym right now and not shoot 5-5.

Not as far as their minutes are distributed either. We play a deeper bench, 8 to their 7, and then both have a young guard getting around 12 minutes on average. They play 4 guys at least 25 minutes, we only play 2 guys over 25 minutes.

I still want to know who Gary guards. xavier is going to spread it out, gary can't defend on the perimeter.

Anytime they have 2 bigs it'll be easy...but other than that I'd say Bluiett. Shaq would have Bluiett when they go big, or when we go small.

Also, I think Ellis can be a better helper in man defense. The more room he has to operate, the better he can be. He's not explosive like a shot blocker like K-Mart was, so he isn't as effective in tighter spaces.

Their guards are very skilled. Can't expect them to make dumb mistakes. Go have man up and play man to man. jenifer and troy should see court together for more than 6-8min. Troy needs be off ball

Ellis isn't nearly the nut job that Jalen Reynolds is. If anybody is getting kicked, it's Reynolds.

I agree with you about Reynolds. But its all about the reaction, which Ellis still has plenty of issues with. Reynolds is a straight punk who will do everything he can to bait Ellis. Not sure Ellis is able to show enough restraint.

If X shoots us out of the zone, we lose. I'm not willing to even let it get to that.

Xavier is 124th in the country (behind UC actually) with 35.6% from 3. Nothing about their team suggests its a team we need to be scared of 3s against other than just flashbacks of the last 2 years. Don't be reactionary to a few shots going in from guys who aren't even here. Play to our strengths and their weaknesses.

I don't know if bait is the right word. I don't think Reynolds is smart enough to bait people, he's just an asshole that is always starting crap. Plus he's averaging an amazing 6.5 fouls per 40 minutes played. Go inside and get him out of the game.

So that's why Farr and Reynolds never play together.

It would be interesting to see if Troy's shooting would improve if he was off the ball. But, it seems as though when they're in together, Mick positions JJ on the wing and Troy at the top. Could possibly be because Mick likes JJ on the wing to make the entry passes to the low post. He has done very well making that pass.

They are too polished to be stopped by a zone. Their 3 pt shooting isn't a weakness when the attempts are coming from good ball movement. They'll shoot way over 35.6% if they are step right in and shoot type 3s. We over help and over switch in the zone. I don't see how that's going to be fixed in time for this game. Mick teams have usually rotated well and closed out well. Less helping and less switching in man can help us take advantage of our length and aggressiveness in trying to get deflections in the passing lanes. And the help mainly comes from Ellis, who as a guy guarding the 5, can typically stay inside and patrol the paint. Mick has done a great job in truly handing it over to the players this year. Scrapping the zone is the final piece to the puzzle imo. A guy like Shaq has a lot better chance using his athleticism to be a lock down defender, than a good team defender when he constantly has to make judgment calls. If you truly want to call out the team for defense, and you want the guys to step up and own it, then imo it has to be in a situation where they have success or failure in their own hands more often. If KJ wants to hound the primary ball handler full court the whole game, I say go for it. That could help keep Caupain fresh, especially if we were able to keep him in an easier assignment. Like for this game, he could take Abell or Mecura for stretches if we go 3 guards.

The reason they don't play together is Bluiett almost always plays the 4. They started doing that last year. Bluiett has only played the 3 about 7% of the time.

Farr only plays 19 minutes a game.

We need Clark on the boards.

- Captain Caupain (This is one game where we might benefit from slowing the game down)
- Cobb (He's still better than 'foul 40 feet from the basket' Kevin Johnson)
- Shaq
- Clark
- Ellis

I want to see more minutes for DeBerry. This guy would start on most of Mick's previous teams.

O/U: 0.5 technical fouls for Ellis ?
