Jacob I agree with you to a certain degree. You can be a efficient offense and still not race up and down the floor. It may not be as entertaining but it can be effective.

I think we can still push when its appropriate. But when I say limit possessions, I mean limit the other teams possessions by playing great defense and forcing them to shoot at the tail end of the shot clock. It reduces possessions but not on our side.

yup.

It can be. But typically I think you'd have to be a big 3 point shooting team to maintain good enough offensive efficiency at a slow pace.

Really our defense has been fine most of the year. The 2nd half of the last 2 games are obviously the biggest exceptions. But I believe before Butler, our opponents were something like 344 out of 351 in length of possession...and our overall tempo is up 92 spots from last year. That's a good balance. And we are still actually 0.7 pts better this year than last year in AdjD.
without effective 3 point shooting you won't win in today's college game. Regardless of time of possession we have been giving up way to many open looks. Doesn't matter if they are early in shot clock or late. A open look is a open look.

The last two games I was disappointed in our defensive effort. We also haven't been as dominating on the glass. It's almost like the team thinks it can turn it on and off at will. Beating cupcakes will do that to you at times.

The offense has had about zero to do with the defense. Their defense hasn't been giving up points because they are run & gun. They have been giving up way too many open looks from 3 and allowing too much penetration in their half-court defense which has nothing to do with their "new" offense. Hell, I'm not even sure what's new about their offense, they just play a little quicker.
I agree long haul

Yes I agree.

Yes I agree.
from some of Mick's comments this week he is trying very hard to impress upon his team that you have to play both ends of the floor. He has been praising X quite a bit which I think is meant to motivate and challenge his team. He knows to win his guys must outwork the opposition. Play strong defense and grow offensively. The problem has been the players haven't kept the same edge defensively or on the glass.

Really hope the team can put a total effort together and send the cintas crowd home unhappy. It would also act as a teachable moment that if the team buys into playing both ends of the court they can beat the 12 ranked team in the nation on their floor. I was really looking for the team to come out with a bad ass attitude against Morgan St. After giving up a late lead against Butler and losing a game they could have easily won. The effort against Morgan St was sub par and gives me the impression that they think they can turn it on and off. Guys defense is a bunch of effort with a good scheme. Our scheme was very good last year with many of the same players. To me that spells attitude. Hope we get it figured out. Can't stand to lose to X.

Yes. This is the nuts and bolts of it. I thought Mick's response after Morgan State was spot on. He definitely got everyone's attention...and I think even scared some of our fans.

I'm concerned with the mental toughness with this team, something I haven't been worried about in a few years.

I agree. I said earlier, who on our team is going to step up, keep our players heads up when X goes on a run? Or when the refs screw us over? Or when our players get in foul trouble. (It's going to happen) I'm just worried about it snow balling quickly. Who has that toughness on our team? I don't think anyone can point to one guy. Even Cronin hasn't even been able to name a player. He is asking each player what they bring to our team.

At least a lot of the guys were in the Purdue game, so they should all know to keep their heads up when the other team makes a run. I think KJ can be this guy though. It is obvious to me that he has made a point to be more aggressive with that ball and in his rebounding/around the basket play this year. Then you factor in his on the ball defense. He can be a little cocky, but sometimes we need that. And he doesn't seem to waver.

I'm not buying this crap about nobody on this team has toughness and there is no leadership. They got overconfident and haven't played well. This team didn't lack toughness last year. It's the same guys. We'll be fine, we just have to get focused and show up to work.

I hope so. I'm still baffled that this year we have struggled with game toughness. With basically everyone coming back and with a lot of game experience it shouldn't be an issue. Our seniors need to take ownership. Even our juniors, they have so much in game experience it should be a strong suite.

If we can win at SMU and against Purdue in the tourney we should be able to handle Saturday. Def will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think this team is lacking identity right now. Are they the rugged defensive team they used to be? Or are they a more up tempo scoring team? They'll get it figured out. March is what matters.

They were also all on the team last year when we were down by 12 at halftime to X. Didn't win the game but showed toughness then to not give up. Game was obviously at home but still.

Being at home was a huge reason. The atmosphere was electric which I think really picked up our players. Hopefully they can feed off X's crowd and want to piss them off.

But why would it be any worse than last year? Because Jermaine Sanders is gone? This is the same team as last year with the exception of few good recruits added in and minus one average player.

If Evans is gimpy, we should save him for when they play their 1-3-1, and just put him in the corner. Shaq and TC need to get into the teeth of that defense to break it down. Ellis also has to be strong and decisive when he catches it elbow area extended.

Mind set. They spent basically the entire offseason working on uptempo offense, it messed with their psyche as players. Hopefully they figure it out by late Feb-early March.

i think it is obvious that in changing our offense our defensive preparation and execution have suffered. The challenge for team is to continue to develope offensively while getting back to our level of defense. Don't know many teams who have been successful as a team by not being able to play both ends of the floor. You will never win a championship by playing one over the other.

No doubt you have to play both ends. The offense this team has put together so far this year has been refreshing, I'm not worried about the defense or the toughness. This coach and these players have proven they can be tough and play lock down defense and I think they'll get back to that point soon.

People also have to understand that when we score more points and run an up tempo offense the other team is going to score more points as well. Just because we win a game 85-70 doesn't necessarily mean we played bad on the defensive end. There's also the shorter shot clock to contend with this season which will naturally lead to more possessions per team. Our old style of offensive basketball lead to about 3 to 4 shot clock violations per game, I could only imagine where that number would be now had we not adopted a new style of play. I believe we're much better off where we sit today than where we sat a year ago and come March we'll be able to play the big games because we'll have the offensive firepower to hang in there.
