Really have no problem signing a guy who needs work to his game but has potential. We are not UK were we can just go and reload every year with one and doners. Quite honestly I am fine getting four year kids. Part of our sucess the last two years was because of 4 year guys. This years team same story. Winning as well as watching the kids graduate and grow athleticlly is what in enjoy the most. MC seems to have a handle on that.

Ideally you would like to have all 4 year players but with the blue print of how college basketball works now its almost impossible to not have JuCo or project players on a team.

I know people don't like "projects" so to speak but remember that Kenyon Martin was a project. He was athletic and a good shot blocker but had few offensive moves when he got here. He had to develop his game. There are very few big guys in a class that are well rounded on the offensive and defensive ends. Those guys are typically blue chippers and you would be lucky to get one in a class let alone two.

There is a reason that many big guys struggle on offense at the college level. First, many don't play against competition in HS that is as big or skilled as them so they don't have to develop many low post moves to get theirs. AAU has helped with this but that still only covers some of the players in the country, not all. Second, many of these guys are still growing into their bodies. A lot of these guys are not yet comfortable with their size and how to use it. It takes time. The third reason for some of these guys (especially kids from around the world) is that they have only recently started playing basketball. Sometimes these kids are told to start playing because they are tall and a good athlete. There is a learning curve with all of these types of players.

Don't know that I agree with that sentiment.
Usually blue chippers are guys who aren't just well rounded, they have certain athleticism or abnormal decision making and size, that puts them leagues apart. I just want someone who can catch the ball, position, rebound and quasi shoot from 8-10 feet if need be. He doesn't have to be K-mart explosive, he doesn't have to be Jared Sullinger versatile and able to score from anywhere and he doesn't have to be a 7 footer. There are many guys like that. It's not that urgent of course.
I think Ellis will be good as he gets stronger and Jackson is improving.
Gaines may be another Kenyon Martin, or he may at least be a good trashman, but wouldn't it be nice to have functional depth as opposed to "potential"?

Kids that have all that you want are blue chip type recruits. There just aren't that many of them that can come in and do that as a freshman.

Dayton got one a Gavrilovic, they're going to have another in Scott, I don't consider either of those kids blue chippers.
One would think, being able to play your position, would be a minimal requirement.
I can understand them needing a year or two of conditioning, to become worthwhile in conference play. I just don't get why every 4 or 5, has to be completely oblivious to basketball. This kid seems to be pretty sound...

We'll see how those two do as freshmen. Nothing against the A-10 but it is a bit different than playing big minutes and making big contributions in a conference like the Big East, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big 12. I will be shocked if Scott averages 12 points and 8 rebounds a game as a freshman. He will probably have some good games but I bet you the Dayton coaches would be the first to tell you he is a work in progress and he has to improve his back to the basket game.

martin was still a top 50 recruit by many analysts. maybe a "project" by some standards, but still a player in high, high demand.

I know he's going to have to work at it, but honestly, Gaines can't dribble, can't position himself, catch the ball or shoot half as well and he's had almost 2 years with this staff now.
I don't expect our frosh to average that, I just want to see one, with a moderate understanding, of how to play.
It's the scoring, it's the boards, the hands and the footwork.

Mick really needs to hire a big man coach that can get results.

He also needs to develop an offensive scheme with movement.

And his players should be shooting 100 FT's a day. Seriously. Going 50% from the FT line is ridiculous.

What's kinda sad is if your post wasn't dated, I wouldn't know what year of his tenure you were talking about. It's not like the weaknesses are anything new.

After last game, we really can't afford any more project bigs.
Other than Yancy, we have no post production at all. Not even a functional garbage man.

****.

I shot well over 100 FTs a day in my playing days...

I once made 54 FTs in a row...maybe more, I've lost count...

I once made 23 THREES in a row...

I once made 10 THREES in a row in the run of play...

I only shot 78% from the FT.

Mental midget? Maybe. Idk. Regardless...........there are players that can't shoot like me and shoot a much lesser percentage. Maybe it is a mental impediment. Maybe it is form. I don't have the answer. I know confidence helps even the worst shooters, like myself.

Players who are too lazy to get themselves in shape don't often work out. They stay lazy and never develop what it takes to excel. Pass.

Simply not true. Many bigs come to college out of shape and many get in shape. There aren't always good conditioning programs in high school and guys with size get by on that alone. I'll take a guy that can score down low. It's a skill that is missing in todays game.

I still think the vast majority of B. J. Groves stay, um, like he did.
