To a certain extent, yes they do. That's why it's nice to have 247sports, because they tend to evaluate more guys and do a better job of it because they are a site solely devoted to recruiting. ESPN is getting better about the bias, but to deny that there is no bias at all is foolish. While they are a company and they have to get as many page views as possible, a few stories on other schools wouldn't kill them.

You are basing this on what? Just because Lawrence, Stephenson and now Moore all dropped in the rankings?

Lawrence- broken wrist, didn't play much his senior year
Stephenson- was a headcase and had an incident, most schools backed off
Moore-dismal summer

There are your reasons why they dropped in the rankings. Cincinnati typically has only been able to get top recruits that fly under the radar.

Read any, I mean any board and the fans will say that ESPN has a bias against them and drops all their recruits...even UK people say this.

Time to grow up Jack....

No, they don't. Whether 247 is devoted to recruiting has nothing to do with ESPN dropping the ranking on a player b/c he committed to UC. And your last sentence has nothing to do with the argument. Fact is that regardless of whether ESPN factors in the schools recruiting a certain player, where they actually commit to has no bearing on their rankings. I've seen plenty of UC players go up in rankings after they have committed and I've seen the opposite. UK, DUKE, and other schools have had players drop in rankings after they commit as well.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rules. 247 being devoted to recruiting is very important, as they have rankings that include more people and since they look at more people and evaluate better, their rankings blow ESPN's out of the water. ESPN typically doesn't focus on recruits unless big schools are interested, so when UC starts recruiting big time guys, they don't get nearly the publicity as bigger schools do. If UK landed Jermaine Lawrence, there would've been a big story on it. We got a little write-up, but to say that there is no bias at all is ridiculous. Jason is right when saying it is more prevalent in football, as there are so many players that have to be evaluated, but it still definitely happens in basketball.

I would guess if ESPN had the ability to speak to Lawrence there would have been a bigger story...

You are trying to string together arguments in an attempt to prove a point that doesn't exist. Even if ESPN did a big story on Lawrence, what on earth does that have to do with his ranking? Bigger/more coverage does not equal higher ranking.

And whether 247 blows ESPN's rankings out of the water b/c they have more people has absolutely nothing to do with a bias against UC. ESPN's recruiting analysts simply do not have a bias against UC. It's borderline absurd to think they do.

I know most of the ESPN guys and there is no bias. All think very highly of Mick...

its not really bias, espn just isnt good. check out what moore is ranked on 247. he didnt drop because of uc....my initial comment was more of a dissapointment because i think, in my biased opinion, that landing top 100 players is good publicity toward landing other good players regardless of the service abd espn was one that had him in the top.

I don't care as much about the recruit ranking as I do the publicity (however small the impact) it is a good thing to have more people reading and hearing things about UC BB. We can get a few more fans and maybe an additional recruit or two will put us on their radar.

That being said I can't comment on an ESPN bias but publicity is a two way street. We can't rely on ESPN obviously.

UC also has to be proactive in seeking the publicity as well as always looking at improving our marketing. We have to put ourselves out there as much as possible until we regain the notoriety we use to enjoy. Maybe we have to send more unsolicited press releases to major news and sports organizations IDK. Coaches can do more interviews, we can better our advertising campaigns, etc. We as fans can blog more about our team (not that I do), we can offer more constructive opinions rather than bashing, we can show up to more games, we can call more friends and invite them to games, etc.

We need to be selling out games. Maybe we could create a rewards program like frequent fan discounts. Give discounts for fans who can get other fans to the game by using a promo code. For each additional person you get to go to the game...you get 20% off your ticket price or you get a reduced season membership price. If someone buys a ticket under your promo code...you get points. IDK...these may all be ridiculous ideas...but I don't think the problem is with ESPN.

I don't think they are bad guys, I think they have an inadvertent bias against smaller markets. UC is definitely not the only school that doesn't get lots of attention, I was just using them as an example. I can understand why they dropped Quadri, but Lawrence should've stayed put. Literally a few days after he announced he was going to UC, he got dropped for being hurt. I think if he picked a big market team, they would've thought about it a little longer before deciding to drop him or not. Clearly, he is a 5 star talent, there is no question. If somebody is hurt and they are as talented as he is, wait until you re-evaluate him before dropping him, don't just drop him because he got hurt. Is not a big deal and either way, they are still highly-rated and that is the most important part, but it is a pet peeve of mine. In the end, as other posters have said, the only thing that matters is how the final product looks after a few years. The publicity is nice when big-time media recognizes that you are a program on the rise, and whether on purpose or inadvertently, I don't think we get the publicity we deserve. Making the tourney 3 straight years with a sweet sixteen is quite an accomplishment and when you are taking your program to the next level with top notch recruiting after it, you deserve to be recognized.

Thanks for posting that. I am excited to see how Quadri does this year. I do not believe UC has had a player with his skill set in a long time.

That is a great picture!! Congrats to Quadri. Bearcat nation can not wait til next year for him to arrive!

There have been alot of updates on Clark with videos and stats of his latest games. Anything on Moore?

His season hasnt started yet. I believe it starts this weekend. His team has only played a few scrimmages up to this point. Updates will be coming.

ask and you shall receive! first game of the season this afternoon against our bitter cross town rivals the elizabeth minutemen.....

few links i meant to post about linden/quadri... i will start with them before i post the article for the game today.....

this was under players to watch:

QUADRI MOORE, LINDEN
A 6-8 Cincinnati commit with the size and post moves to dominate inside and the shooting touch to make him a threat from beyond the arch. Led the Union County squad to the Group 4 final last season and was third team All-State.

Group IV is the group with the largest schools..... the NJ state paper the Newark Star Ledger picked Linden to win the state title after a heartbreaking overtime loss in the state championship game last year:

GROUP 4
Favorite: Linden made an impressive and somewhat improbable run to the Group 4 final last season. Coach Phil Colicchio knows his squad isn't sneaking up on anybody this time. Cincinnati commit Quadri Moore looked to be coming into his own in the state tournament, patrolling the paint with authority, and has impressed even more this preseason. Linden's daunting Union County schedule will prepare it for the big postseason games it expects to play

not big on preseason rankings but Linden comes in at #4 in the state with only 3 parochial schools above them who have the ability to recruit top notch talent lol...... sorry had to..... wow we are the #1 public in the state... target on our backs for sure!! hope the high ranking doesnt go to the kids head

and here is the story about todays game which i am certain you will be very happy to see!!

Quadri Moore had 20 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks as Linden, No. 4 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, bested Elizabeth, 61-50, in Elizabeth. Joshua Carter had 10 points and four rebounds in the victory and Juwan Jones had eight points for Linden, which erased a 12-8 first-quarter deficit with a 24-12 second. Kamil Brown led Elizabeth with 15 points and Josh Gorden had 10.

hope you enjoyed!! nice win against pitt the other night!

Thanks for the updates, John. You said Linden is favored to win state in the big school division, but are ranked 4th behind 3 private schools... Do the private schools play in a separate tournament in New Jersey? That has been discussed a lot over the years in Ohio, but at least for now, the private and public schools are all in the same tournaments by division. Also, how good is the league Linden plays in? Is it mostly other larger schools, or is it more mixed because of geography? Thanks!

Found some game tape of Quadri:http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JGEBTEjEii8&desktop_uri=/watch?v=JGEBTEjEii8

This was in the tournament last year in March
Quadri is number 30 in the orange

Quadri played pretty bad the first 7 minutes, but he makes a nice move around the 7:50 mark.
He sort of fades into the background, but then makes some nice moves again around the 15 minute mark. From that point on, he plays pretty well.

Positives: He has some great moves that most bigs cannot defend. He is pretty gifted offensively and can really help you stretch the defense. He isn't afraid to post and then re-post if something isn't there, and he is good about staying away from the double team. He has a nice shooting touch from the outside.

Negatives: He can be a pretty bad rebounder. He sometimes doesn't box out and he doesn't grab the ball with two hands. While his playing like a guard can give him an advantage at times, he also gambles sometimes on defense and at other times looks lost. He needs to learn that if he is going to foul someone, he must foul them hard so that they don't get an "and 1." He is still learning how to play the post and really assert himself down low.

Miscellaneous: The guard play of his team in this game was pretty bad. They looked like a deer in headlights when they were trying to break the press later on in the game. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't sub Quadri out every once in a while for a guard so that they could more effectively break the press. I think their guards need to learn the concept of "fake a pass to make a pass." Quadri hit a big 3 that really helped sway the momentum. He also had a nice dunk off a telegraphed pass that he picked off. Both of those were huge plays in the game.

Overall: He has a nice game. He will provide another element to our offense that we lack this year. Hopefully, Mick can really coach him up and make him become the complete player that he could be. He does remind me of Yancy a little bit, as he sometimes doesn't assert himself down low, but he is incredibly skilled. He is definitely slimmer and quicker than Yancy, but both have the same tendencies. I'm excited to get Quadri and I hope that with DeBerry/Strickland/Lawrence/Clark, we got some nice offensive production from our bigger players next year.

Nice analysis.

Those are the type of negatives that this staff can iron out... rebounding/defense is what they do best. I'd much rather have to teach that than the ability to score, especially for a big man. Hopefully he can develop into a dangerous inside/outside threat like an Alex Kirk.

Yeah, they are going to have to work on his inside game a little more, but he has one of the best fadeaway jumpers I've seen in a while. He can also step out and knock down the 3, which is great. Like you said, all pretty basic stuff that needs to be corrected. Also, something I forgot to mention, he isn't incredibly athletic. He is just very coordinated and has a knack for hitting tough shots. Think he will be a nice combo with the very athletic Clark/Lawrence.

Hi Robert.... yes the private schools play in a separate state tournament..... they do play in their respective county tournaments... although st anthonys (bob hurley) took his team out of the county tournament to give other schools a chance to win a championship lol.... anyway..... privates have two divisions... parochial A and parochial B.... the publics have Group I through IV based on enrollment.... so there are 6 state champions from the aforementioned groups.... those 6 teams are then seeded and play in the Tournament of Champions.... in the 24 year history of the Tournament of Champions St Anthonys has won it an amazing 12 times! followed by st patricks (kevin boyle--current coach at USATodays #2 montverde academy) with 5 TofC titles..... the publics have only won the TofC 4 times the last time coming way back in 2000 behind one of the best players ever in new jersey--dejuan wagner.....

Linden plays in undoubtedly the toughest conference in new jersey.... we are in the same conference as the #2 team in state... the #7 team in the state and many more tough schools including elizabeth who we beat last night that is one of the biggest public schools in america 5000+ students..so we will be playing them all home/away...... our out conference schedule is one of the toughest in the state as well as we are playing some of last years state champions including tomorrow when we play the group II champion newark tech..... we scrimmaged the #1 team in the state last week that includes kentucky recruit 7'1" karl towns and we destroyed them albeit without the starting point guard 6'3" vanderbilt recruit wade baldwin.... dont take much from scrimmages but just sayin... lol...

our conference is based on geography but they have different divisions within our conference based on school size.... hope that was helpful sorry if i am long winded lol
