Might be a stupid question...but if a guy has graduated and could be eligible as a Grad Transfer, are you allowed to talk to him/talk him into considering transferring? Or does he have to declare his intention to transfer first? Not sure if graduating makes a difference in this or not.

The moment you realize you're on everyone's ignore list...:)

I'm assuming you can't? But seems like some of these guys already know where they're going the second they announce (like Mathews from Cal).

Lol that's funny. Off season man, it's rough! I'd imagine you cannot contact them if they're under scholarship still at a different school. After they announce you probably can. I feel like guys know where they want to go based off previous coaches or schools that have recruited them. They probably keep up with what's going on at those schools and know if they'll have playing time or not.

I'd assume you're correct. I just know scholarships are year to year. And if you've technically graduated, you'd have to enroll again to get into a Master's program. Seems like that could make you a free agent. Unless it's up to the school for players who still have eligibility.

I just wish we could let it be known to any smaller school wing looking for a chance to play in the tournament, that we have an immediately available opportunity.

Whoops, sorry, I had you on my ignore list. ;)

I am not 100% sure but I believe the player needs to officially announce their intent to transfer before you can talk to them. If they are on scholarship at another university, it would be against the rules I would think to talk to a player about leaving that school.

I wouldn't be surprised if we do add anyone else to this class it's an international talent we've never heard of or a JUCO player. We need a 3 to backup Evans or some more size off the bench to not force Scott or Brooks to do more than they're able to right away. If we don't add anyone else they better see a ton of minutes early on the year to get their feet wet

Really hoping we can bring someone in for this year, although odds seem slim. It shows we're not playing the "desperate" card, passing on a couple guys recently, but I'm not sure how I feel about 10 scholarships. If the 10 were all sure-fire contributors, it'd be a different story. A tall wing would be perfect for versatility purposes.

With current roster, starting lineup will have to be:
Caupain at PG
Cumberland at SG
Evans at SF
Washington at PF
Clark at C

Our bench is very, very thin. Scary!

Flip Washington and Clark. Jury is still out on Cumberland starting over KJ. Similar situation with Shaq/Evans last year

Kind of similar situation, yet much different still. Evans would have been surmounting a 2 year starter in Shaq. KJ has never been anything but a spot starter. I don't anticipate that changing.

going into his senior year and the teams best perimeter defender? I have a hard time thinking he wont start.

I'd be stunned if Johnson didn't start. Cronin has made it clear that he doesn't think who starts the game matters at all (even if getting off to slow starts is a major problem). And his track record shows he'll go to the SR, even if they are clearly the lesser player.

I don't think this is a fair assessment. Freshmen have started for Mick. You only have to go back a couple years to Gary Clark to see it. I think it is fair to say that, in an even competition, the older player usually wins out for Mick Cronin. Can you show me a freshman that was an obvious no brainer to start that Mick left on the bench in favor of a junior or senior who was not as talented? When you have a team of 4 year players that you develop, you aren't going to see a lot of freshmen ready. In my opinion, if Cumberland is not a liability on defense and is a superior offensive player, he will start. He will have to prove it but I don't believe KJ is going to just be given that spot because he is a senior.

Clark started bc it was a whole new team and it was either going to be him or Quadri Moore. There was no established player to beat out.

Shaq Thomas started over Evans. Evans is obviously way better. Not even a debate.

Guyn started over Caupain. Caupain was obviously way better. I know Caupain was young, but he was still the better player. That's why he played more minutes. No debate.

For the team to be its best, we need Cumberland to be a contributor in as significant a way as possible. Imo taking his lumps in the exhibition and early season slate could really pay off by the end of the year. He has a higher ceiling than Johnson. And I feel like Johnson started to get comfortable in his role towards the end of the year last year. First guy off the bench to bring energy and not have pressure on him to score would be best imo. But we shall see.

Like I said, Cronin has made it clear that he doesn't think it matters who starts. He's started the worse player before bc of seniority. I'll be surprised if he doesn't do it again.
