New Arena

Complaining about traffic is stupid if you wanna be big time. Think about it most MAJOR colleges are in small towns with ZERO highways for MILES. Were going downtown anyway if and when we do get new campus arena. I GUARANTEE you we will know where our future is headed in next couple weeks. City needs UC help in funding downtown arena to get the RNC here.

First off you are suggesting you know something. Secondly, I imagine whether or not the RNC comes to town is the furthest thing on the minds down at UC. They gain nothing from it. If anything the city will be ponying up money towards upgrading the arena to get us to move down there. If UC does want to move down there, they have the leverage to push the city for funding, not the other way around.

Here is the thing, the deep pockets downtown want the political convention here very badly, but as usual they want somebody else to pay for it. It's a chicken and egg thing; the arena owners will not commit to upgrade without a long-term tenant, and so now the pressure is on UC to not only make a long term commitment but provide some of the funding for the renovation as well. The University of Cincinnati should have zero interest in luring a political convention, the only motivation should be what is best for UC. If the convention was not the prime reason for the downtown crowd, they would have tried to lure UC down there years ago.

So here is an idea. Since Mr. Castellini has very deep pockets and has a history of being a very large contributor and fundraiser for political campaigns, why not have him purchase the building, renovate it for the convention, and then try to lure UC or an NBA or NHL franchise to fill the seats. If they want UC to put up money to lure a convention, then the answer should be a flat no.

Mark my words right now, if UC moves their games off campus it will be the worst decision our athletic department has ever made.

Agreed. I live in Chicago and DePaul's arena is in Rosemont off campus and look at them. obviously their problems go deeper than the arena but in a huge city they cannot draw any fans off campus.

Yea I'd say the product is the bigger problem there than the location. So some of you guys are saying if UC got an arena like the YUM Center downtown it would be a bad decision?

I'll go to the games regardless of location. I just want better seating. I did find it interesting that the student sections were not filled unless the game was a key match up. If the students don't show up on campus I have do doubt they won't show up at the Banks. Makes keeping it on Campus for the student comfort a mute point. I really don't think attendence will be effected much either way. If the team continues to elevate its play, brings in better competition and makes the NCAA tourney on a regular basis fans will show up. If that doesn't do it I wouldn't invest a dime in the program regardless of where the games are played. It would be a waste of money to build new on Campus or the banks the intrest is just not there.

As for Football it was spelled out nicely why it was a no brainer to invest in Nippert. It paid for itself and will generate more revenue. Renovating 5th /3rd would not have done that.

Not in my mind. I'd go to a Yum center like facility in a heartbeat. Would much rather go to the Banks then Clifton but will go to Clifton if the Cats play there. I think they would lose some fans moving to the banks but I also think they would be negated by new people showing up at the banks. I also think over time if the program does well and continues to perform it will not matter where games are played people will turn out.

I know I'm in the minority, but the arena is not an issue for me. I guess I'd rather have something like Yum Center, but I like 5/3 just fine.

Unless millions of dollars of donations come in, We dont have the money to spend on an arena right now with all hte money being devoted to football.

Thats just the way it is. I'd like UC to have a 100,000 seat arena with the Dallas cowboys scoreboard and a Xavier Sucks skyscraper in the middle of Campus.

UC not to Cincinnati what UofL is to Louisville. UofL has no competition in that city. Moving downtown is not going to magically bring the city around us and give us 15k fans per game.

Why?

Don't make it sound like he's crazy for preferring it downtown. A lot of people here would like it downtown, as would I. The Banks is turning into a fantastic area.
I have know issue with Clifton. I am a Cincinnati fan who didn't go to school there. If I went to UC I would be more familiar with the campus and may have a different opinion. I do enjoy the Banks and go there often. Thus my personal preference.

I on the other hand am a student who goes to UC in Clifton. The sooner I don't have to go to Clifton, the better, personally. I'm not a fan of the area and no "but it's got this that this these" is going to change that. I'll go if the game is there but otherwise forget it!
